What forecasters said that day

The local office's own words before this heat advisory went out, as it sent them, from the Iowa Environmental Mesonet's archive of National Weather Service text.

NWS Wichita, KS wrote its last area forecast discussion before this heat advisory went out at Aug 8, 1:14 PM CDT, 1 hour 4 minutes earlier.

Area forecast discussion, Aug 8, 1:14 PM CDT, 1 hour 4 minutes before
Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Wichita KS
114 PM CDT Sun Aug 8 2021

.SHORT TERM...(Today through Tuesday night)
Issued at 304 AM CDT Sun Aug 8 2021

Main story up front: Very warm temperatures for today through Tue
and possibly Wed. A chance of strong to severe storms this afternoon
for areas east of the KS Turnpike.

Linear complex of storms continues to make NE to E progress
across NE KS and SE KS at this time, with most of this convection
expected to shift east of the area for the morning hours, as low
level moisture transport veers to the NE. So expect most locations
to gradually clear for the morning hours. The only thing that
could lead to a "fly in the ointment" will be a meso induced vort
center (MCV) currently near KVNX. latest short range CAM solutions
suggest this MCV will make slow progress easterly this morning,
possibly drifting a little further north into the Flint Hills and
SE KS late this morning, which may lead to some renewed showers
and storms as it moves east over the Flint Hills and SE KS. So
will leave some morning pops in for this chance.

The main shortwave that led to the northern KS complex of storms is
still currently located over NW KS at this time. As the main
shortwave moves east today, S-SW breezy conditions will once again
return to areas west of I-135, with good downslope flow again
leading to max temperatures again climbing into the upper 90s to
near 100.

A rather complicated forecast for the afternoon hours, as this
shortwave is supposed to slowly shift east for the daytime hours
into eastern KS. As this shortwave shifts east, lots of low level
moisture will still be available for areas east of the KS Turnpike,
with surface dewpoints expected to be in the low to mid 70s. The
breezy/mixy conditions to the west will lead to a pseudo-dryline
developing across the forecast area for the afternoon hours,
possibly setting up along the KS Turnpike.

The real concern will be for areas east of the KS Turnpike for this
afternoon, as this dryline sets up along the Turnpike, with a
weakly capped airmass expected to the east of the Turnpike, and a
moderately unstable airmass expected for this afternoon, with
MLCAPE values of 2500-3200 J/KG. As the shortwave mentioned above
moves across NE KS, there is a conditional chance of strong to
severe thunderstorms developing for portions of the Flint Hills
for early this afternoon and early this evening, given bulk shear
values around 30 kts, but actually better directional shear than
yesterday. This could lead to a couple of supercells developing
and a sneaky large hail threat, given the expected moderate
instability. Bufkit soundings suggest a damaging wind threat as
well, with warm low layers leading to an inverted-V sounding
profile. Expect this strong/severe chance to have a narrow "window
of opportunity", as most of the convection will move east of the
area by the early evening hours.

After the shortwave moves east, another very warm and breezy
afternoon is expected for Mon. Expect max temperatures again to
climb into the upper 90s to around 100 for areas west of the
I-135. Medium range models show confidence that the very warm
temperatures will continue for Tue and possibly Wed as well.

Latest medium range models suggest a frontal boundary will ooze
south into central KS by Tue afternoon and evening, with a models
showing a renewed chance of showers and thunderstorms across central
KS, and possibly the rest of the area by Tue night.

Ketcham

.LONG TERM...(Wednesday through Saturday)
Issued at 304 AM CDT Sun Aug 8 2021

Some uncertainty on how the middle of the week will play out, as the
GFS shows a more unsettled weather pattern with shower/storm
chances, while the ECMWF and the National Blend are much drier.

Medium range models are hinting at a much stronger cold front will
push into the area either late Thu night or early Fri, with a chance
of showers and storms for Fri afternoon and evening.

Lots of uncertainty on how the end of the weekend into next week
will play out. Both the GFS and ECMWF now show the Fri cold front
"washing out" over the area, with hot temperatures now returning for
the end of the weekend possibly into the beginning of next week. The
differences lie in how hot things will get, as GFS shifts the upper
ridge over the northern plains and Great Lakes (hotter solution),
while the ECMWF keeps it back over the Rockies, with some some NW
flow influences for the plains with more seasonal temperatures.
Latest National Blend favors the cooler solution, but could see
this changing with later runs.

.AVIATION...(For the 18Z TAFS through 18Z Monday afternoon)
Issued at 1253 PM CDT Sun Aug 8 2021

Concerns:
1) Thunderstorm potential for KCNU

2) Smoke/haze in north central Kansas

3) Low level wind shear in southeast Kansas

A low pressure system will continue to track east. There is
potential for thunderstorm development this afternoon across
southeast Kansas into eastern Oklahoma and the Ozarks as the upper
level part of the system approaches the surface low. Better
potential for storms exists to the south and east. A few storms
could develop thus VCTS was left in for KCNU. Strong to severe
storms with quarter sized hail and 60 mph winds are possible with
this convective activity. Any potential should move out by about
3Z. As the upper level part of the system keeps tracking east,
this could result in low level wind shear overnight into early
Monday in southeast Kansas.

Haze induced by smoke from wildfires out west has maintained a
slight eastward track today. Visible satellite shows the haze, but
the observations were slow to respond or showed minimal influence except
in western Kansas. While there will be smoke, it is tough to say
that the visibility reduction would be significantly noticeable
especially at the surface. Observational trends will be monitored,
and amendments may be needed particularly for KRSL and KGBD.
