High pressure will cross the region today, then exit across the
Maritimes tonight into Wednesday. Low pressure will lift north
across the region Wednesday night through Thursday then exit
across the Maritimes Friday. High pressure will build toward the
region from the west Saturday.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
1015 am update...
Temps are warming rapidly this morning under sunny skies. Mid-
lvl clouds skirting thru the north have had very little impact
on temps. No chgs needed with this update.

Previous Discussion...
Surface high pressure currently off the Mid-Atlantic coast will
move east today, shifting winds out of the south. Satellite
imagery shows a band of mid-level cloud cover moving in from
Quebec today associated with warm advection and overrunning
around and just above 850H. These clouds will move over the area
today, somewhat limiting the full potential for high
temperatures. However, highs will still be well above normal,
ranging from the mid 40s to low 50s. Return flow aloft will
continue to increase overnight as an upper level trough slowly
moves eastward over the Great Lakes. Dew points will rise into
the mid to upper 30s overnight across Downeast Maine, which
will support formation of either a low stratus deck or patchy
fog. This, in turn, should lead to a slight anti-diurnal rise in
temperatures Downeast by daybreak. Lows are expected to remain
above freezing across nearly all of the area.

.SHORT TERM /WEDNESDAY THROUGH THURSDAY NIGHT/...
High pressure will exit across the Maritimes Wednesday. A cold
front will approach from the west later Wednesday, with low
pressure developing along the front across the Mid-Atlantic
region. Clouds increase in advance of the approaching front
Wednesday, with rain chances increasing from the west Wednesday
afternoon. The cold front will begin to slowly cross the region
Wednesday night while low pressure tracks north toward the
region along the front. Rain will occur across the region
Wednesday night. The cold front will slowly begin to cross the
region Thursday while the low moves north along the front.
However, how rapidly this occurs is uncertain. Precipitation
will remain in the form of rain in advance of the front. Colder
air in the wake of the front will allow a transition to a
snow/rain mix or snow. Dependent on the progress of the cold
front, precipitation could transition to a snow/rain mix or snow
across northwest areas Thursday afternoon with some
accumulation possible though amounts remain uncertain. The low
will lift north of Maine Thursday night, drawing the cold front
east of the region. Precipitation will taper to showers in the
wake of the cold front and low. Across northern areas,
precipitation should end in the form of snow or snow showers
with some accumulation possible. Across Downeast areas,
precipitation will taper to snow/rain showers or snow showers.
Temperatures will be at much above normal levels Wednesday.
Temperatures Thursday will be dependent on the location of the

early Wednesday morning.

SHORT TERM: A Small Craft Advisory is in effect through
Wednesday, which will likely need extended Wednesday night
through Thursday night. Patchy fog early Wednesday. Rain and
patchy fog Wednesday night into Thursday night.

.HYDROLOGY...
The Grimes/N Caribou Road near the Caribou-Fort Fairfield town
line remains closed due to water over the road caused by an ice
jam. Water continues to threaten Russell Rd east of the Fort
Fairfield bridge, but no closures at this time. Flows are high,
but it is suspected that ice is anchored in the Fort Fairfield
vicinity keeping the jam in place. Ice movement over the Caribou
Dam will be monitored as this could affect the jam downstream.

Route 164 is also closed in the vicinity of Langille Rd near
Crouseville due to water over the road, likely due to a jam in
Rum Rapids.

Saint John River:
Sheet ice was reported from Van Buren to Keegan, with a ice jam
upstream to around Grand Isle. There is flooding of the typical
lowland areas, with some water/ice approaching Route 1 in spots.
These areas, as well as the open back water near Grand Isle,
will be monitored as temperatures fluctuate this week.

Another significant rain producing system is expected later
Wednesday into Thursday night. Rain from this system, along
with melting snow, will keep elevated river levels along with
the threat of ice jams across northern portions of the region.
