A strong area of low pressure will move from the Upper Great Lakes
overnight to Quebec Monday, bringing rain showers, much warmer
temperatures, and strong winds to the region tonight through
Monday. Much colder air will pour back into the region late
Monday through Tuesday, with limited lake effect snow east of
Lake Erie and Lake Ontario. A weak wave of low pressure will
then bring a chance of light snow to much of the region
Wednesday.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TODAY/...
...STRONG WINDS EXPECTED OVERNIGHT INTO MONDAY EVENING...
Headlines...
A High Wind Warning is in effect for downslope winds tonight along
the Lake Erie shore of Chautauqua and Southern Erie counties. A High
Wind Warning is in effect for downslope winds along the north slopes
of the Tug Hill Plateau and Black River Valley in Jefferson and
Lewis counties. A Wind Advisory is in effect for the rest of the
area.
Synoptic Setup...
A strong mid level trough will move from the Northern Plains
overnight to the Upper Great Lakes Monday. A strong and
deepening area of low pressure will move from the Upper
Peninsula of Michigan tonight to central Quebec by late Monday,
with a trailing cold front crossing the eastern Great Lakes
midday through mid afternoon Monday. The northern stream trough
will partially phase with southern stream energy moving through
the Ohio Valley Monday morning, which will result in a weak
baroclinic wave along the advancing cold front on Monday. The
presence of a weak frontal wave seems to be weakening the post-
frontal wind field to at least a small extent.
Precipitation...
A broad area of strong warm advection is supporting an area of
rain which is moving across the area during the early morning
hours. There may be a brief period with mixed precipitation
across far northern Jefferson county early this morning, where
surface obs show temperatures notably cooler than areas to the
south which have warmed due to downsloping.
There is likely to be a lull in the precipitation behind this
initial band, then another round of steadier rain will move in
this morning.
The cold front will then sweep east across the area Monday, with a
few hours of rain showers. The aforementioned frontal wave may bring
a little longer period of rain and higher rain totals from the
western Southern Tier to Finger Lakes and eastern Lake Ontario
region. Rain totals tonight through Monday will generally be 0.25"-
0.5" for most of the area, and 0.5"-1.25" east of Lake Ontario with
the highest amounts on the south face of the Tug Hill from upslope
enhancement.
Winds...
The strong wind potential will come in two phases. First, a strong
southerly low level jet will cross the region overnight,
setting the stage for strong downslope winds. The 60-70 knot low
level jet is across the region now. Forecast soundings suggest
a stable layer near the top of the terrain barrier with a strong
low level inversion in place. This will set the stage for a
downslope wind event, with stable flow accelerating down the lee
slopes of the Chautauqua Ridge. The magnitude of the low level
jet and thermal structure suggest a good potential for gusts to
near 65 mph near the Lake Erie shore and northward facing slopes
of western Chautauqua and southern Erie counties. Winds
overnight could gust to 60 mph in the deeper north to south
running valleys of the Finger Lakes as well.
This same low level jet will reach the eastern Lake Ontario region
later tonight through Monday morning. The same stability profiles
are in place, with a strong inversion and stable layer near the top
of the terrain barrier. Gusts to 65 mph are also possible downslope
of the Tug Hill Plateau and Adirondacks, across portions of northern
Lewis County and western Jefferson County. Given the strength of the
LLJ, wind gusts could reach 50-55 mph downslope along some of the
south-north oriented ridges and valleys across the Genesee Valley
and Western Finger Lakes south of the NY Thruway.
The second phase of this wind event will be post-frontal winds
Monday afternoon and evening. The track of the deepening surface low
is quite favorable (maybe a little too far northwest of our area),
but the strength of the post-frontal wind fields is marginal. Latest
guidance shows 45-50 knots at 850 mb, which will support advisory
level gusts (50-55 mph). A tropopause fold is evident within the mid
level trough axis, with the 1.5 PVU surface extending down below
500MB. This feature moves from lower Michigan to near Toronto by
Monday evening, suggesting the deepest mixing and downward momentum
transfer will miss our area to the northwest.
The preponderance of evidence based on this setup suggests advisory
gusts of 50-55 knots northeast of Lake Erie, along the Lake Ontario
shore, and Saint Lawrence Valley. Peak winds in Western NY will be
from midday to early evening Monday, for the Rochester area from mid
afternoon through mid evening Monday, and east of Lake Ontario from
late afternoon through the evening Monday.

.SHORT TERM /TONIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY NIGHT/...
Strong gusty westerly winds will continue through the first half of
Monday night, before dropping off during the second half of the
night as the strong jet just off the deck departs to the east
of our area.
Minor lake effect snows set to impact areas E and ESE of the Lakes
Monday night and Tuesday. Much colder air will quickly pour across
the region during the first half of Monday night in the wake of
strong cold FROPA. 850Ts dropping down to around -12C/-13C is plenty
sufficient to generate a response off the lakes. A general westerly
low level flow will dominate, with WNW to WSW oscillations through
Tuesday. A lack of overall synoptic moisture and band oscillation
will be large factors in keeping snow amounts relatively tame in
any one location.
Off Lake Erie, a band of lake effect snow will be located across
southern Erie, Chautauqua and Cattaraugus counties during the first
half of Monday night, before a slight wind shift from 260 to 270
degrees and drier air working in from the west will shift the band a
bit further south into Chautauqua and Cattaraugus counties. The band
will lessen in intensity, but not before up to a few inches of snow
falls in these areas. Expecting just mainly scattered lake effect
snow showers east of the Lake on Tuesday. Winds briefly shift to
more of a 250 degree direction Tuesday evening, with a brief window
of more favorable conditions possibly producing a short-lived band
of lake effect snow across far southern Erie, northern Chautauqua
and northwestern Cattaraugus counties possibly producing a quick 1-2
inches. Inversion heights quickly lower during the second half of
Tuesday night as drier air associated with high pressure moves into
western NY.
Off Lake Ontario, a bit better setup here, mainly just due to the
fact that some upstream connection with Lake Huron is likely.
Synoptic moisture will be lacking here as well. A band of lake
effect snow will quickly develop east of Lake Ontario Monday evening
on a 260-270 flow, before veering to more of a 280-290 flow for the
second half of the night. This will shift the band from portions of
Jefferson, Lewis and Oswego counties (centered on the Tug Hill), a
bit further south across northern Oswego and southern Lewis
counties. This will keep accumulations to no more than a few inches
at any one given location. A brief connection with Huron sets up
Tuesday morning with a decent convergent band setting up ESE of the
Lake possibly producing a quick few inches across far northern
Cayuga and Oswego counties. Winds quickly shift to more of a 250-260
direction for the second half of Tuesday, swinging the band back
north across the Tug Hill and the southern Half of Jefferson County
where it may produce an additional couple inches of accumulation
Tuesday afternoon/evening before tapering off here as well.
Shortwave departs and high pressure briefly builds across the area
Tuesday night, effectively shutting down any organized lake effect.
That said, there may still be some lingering scattered lake snow
showers east of both Lakes through the overnight with spotty minor
accums possible.
System that was set to impact our area on Wednesday continues to
trend further southeast/east of our area, which means the likelihood
for a widespread light accumulating snowfall continues to be less
and less (PoPs now capped at low to mid chance). That said, an upper
level trough remains progged to cross the region, which will still
have the potential to produce some scattered snow showers across
western and northcentral NY. System departs Wednesday night, leaving
a northerly low level flow of cold, but dry air crossing over Lake
Ontario which may produce a few lake effect snow showers south of
the Lake. If nothing else, will keep cloud cover intact across areas
south of Lake Ontario.
Otherwise, temperatures will remain below climatological norms
through the period. Daytime highs Tuesday and Wednesday will
generally be in the mid to upper 20s across the higher terrain, with
low 30s elsewhere.

.LONG TERM /THURSDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
Upper level ridge axis along with corresponding surface high
pressure will slide east across the area Thursday. At first this
will result in the last of the lake effect showers south of Lake
Ontario to peter out, before becoming a rather quiet day for the
remainder of the day. Additionally, the passing of the upper level
ridge will mark a period of warming heading into the weekend.
Meanwhile Thursday, far to the west of New York State, the next
longwave trough will extend southward across the western Central
Plains. Thursday night, a subtle shortwave will rotate through the
longwave trough, and send a ripple of lowering heights and
corresponding warm frontal boundary across the Great Lakes and
southern Ontario Canada. The warm front will sweep across the area
from southwest to northeast Thursday night through Friday morning,
with a mix of rain and snow across the Lake Plains and mostly snow
across the higher elevations. Then, a brief period of dry weather
late Friday afternoon into Friday evening as the region will lie
between the exiting front and the next incoming system.
Speaking of which, the next shortwave will begin to round the
aforementioned longwave trough Friday, where it will deepen,
elongate and sharpen the overall longwave trough across the western
Central Plains, before pushing eastward across the Central Plains
Saturday and eventually overhead of the region Sunday. In the
meantime, the upper air pattern previously described will support a
Colorado Low to form Thursday night before tracking east-northeast
towards the Great Lakes Friday and reaching the Great Lakes Friday
night. From here it will continue on its northeastward track as it
heads towards southern Quebec by Sunday. As this system passes
overhead, expect much of the precipitation to fall in the form of
rain as 850mb temperatures warm to around +5C by Friday evening.
However as the system exits, a pool of cold air (around -6C at
850mb) will fill in behind it, which will support the last of the
showers to have a mix of rain and snow.
All this being said, there are stark differences in the track of the
Colorado Low between 12Z model guidance packages. Both the ECMWF and
Canadian track the surface low across the Upper/Central Great Lakes,
whereas the GFS tracks this low across the Lower Great Lakes. A
southern track will equate to wetter solution for the region.
Overall the forecast resembles a middle ground between the two
solutions with precipitation likely next weekend. Will have to
continue to keep an eye on this system as time advances, so stay
tuned.

.AVIATION /06Z MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
Strong low pressure will then move from the Upper Great Lakes
overnight to Quebec on Monday, producing several rounds of rain
showers. A few of the heavier rain showers will reduce VSBY to
MVFR at times. Areas of MVFR CIGS, with IFR across higher
terrain, will develop later tonight through Tuesday morning.
Downslope winds may aid in keeping the lake plains VFR tonight,
including most of the TAF sites. A cold front will then sweep
east across the area Monday, with the lower elevations improving
to VFR later in the day, and MVFR for higher terrain.
A strong southerly low level jet across the region overnight,
producing strong winds in downslope areas with surface gusts of
25- 35 knots areawide, and 40-50+ knots in downslope areas such
as the Lake Erie shore, Finger Lakes valleys, and northern
slopes of the Tug Hill Plateau. In areas where surface winds are
not as strong, low level wind shear will occur. There will be a
brief lull in winds Monday morning, then west-southwest winds
will increase from midday through the afternoon behind the cold
front. Gusts of 40-45 knots are expected northeast of Lake Erie
and along the Lake Ontario shore, with 30-40 knots farther
inland.
Outlook...
Monday night and Tuesday...Local IFR in lake effect snow east of the
lakes, otherwise mainly VFR.
Wednesday...MVFR/IFR. Light snow likely.
Thursday...VFR.
Friday...VFR/MVFR with a chance of rain/snow showers.

.MARINE...
Overnight and Monday, deepening strong low pressure will pass
by to our west and north bringing gales to both lakes Monday
into Monday night. This is supported by strong wind fields and
good post-frontal mixing, with winds sustained winds expected to
reach 35 knots on Lake Erie and 40 knots on Lake Ontario at
times. Gale Warnings are up for both lakes, with Small Craft
Advisories for the Upper and Lower Niagara River, and Saint
Lawrence River. Winds will diminish late Monday night and
Tuesday.

.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
WSW gales to 40 knots Monday and Monday night will produce
significant wave action on Lake Ontario. Strong onshore winds
and wave action may produce minor lakeshore flooding along the
Lake Ontario shore of Jefferson and Oswego counties, where a
Lakeshore Flood Warning is in effect.
Strong winds may also produce a seiche on Lake Erie, but winds
will not quite as strong. A recent event with gales to 35 knots
caused levels to rise to 5.5 ft. Winds slightly stronger with
this system, with LEOFS forecasts of around 6.5 ft seeming
reasonable. This will produce shoreline erosion, and may produce
some spray across Route 5 in Hamburg, but significant impacts
are not expected.
