and into Monday morning as an Arctic airmass plows into the area
and brings strong northerly winds and the potential for icing
conditions with freezing rain, sleet and even snow a possibility
overnight. Ceilings should remain in the IFR to LIFR range for the
next 10 to 12 hours with wintry precip possible, and then begin
to lift to MVFR midday on Monday. Note...BRO, HRL, and MFE ASOS do
not have freezing rain detection sensors, so wx observations may
not reflect any ZR occurrence across the RGV.

..HAZARDOUS WINTER WEATHER AND EXTREMELY COLD TEMPERATURES EXPECTED TO
DEVELOP ACROSS DEEP SOUTH TEXAS THROUGH TUESDAY MORNING...
SHORT TERM (Now through Monday Night): A 500mb trough is currently
moving through Texas and will exit the region on Monday bringing
with it an extremely cold Arctic airmass and wintry precipitation
that will lead to hazardous conditions across Deep South Texas.
Models have been struggling with the colder temperatures in the past
few days showing much warmer temperatures than what is being
observed on the surface thus we have adjusted temperatures slightly
lower with this package. The best chance of precipitation occurs
just ahead of and along the leading edge of the arctic air this
evening into tonight with drier air arriving early Monday.
Model guidance is still showing freezing rain as the main form of
precipitation once temperatures fall below freezing this evening
into Monday morning with some sleet mixing in. A few snow flurries
or brief periods of snow can not be ruled out mainly across Zapata
and Jim Hogg counties as the column continues to cool. With the
mixed bag of frozen precipitation, hazardous conditions will develop
across Deep South Texas overnight tonight into Monday morning and
travel should be avoided as flyovers, interchanges, bridges, and
elevated surfaces will likely become icy Sunday night into Monday
morning. This may occur even when surface temperatures are a degree
or two above freezing.
With the arrival of the Arctic air northerly winds will increase
tonight, with life threatening wind chills through Monday morning. A
Hard Freeze, with surface temperatures falling below 27 degrees for
multiple hours is likely across the northern ranchlands counties
of Zapata, Jim Hogg, Brooks, and Kenedy counties tonight.
Temperatures Monday will remain in the low 30s across Deep South
Texas with some areas across the northern ranchlands remaining
just at or below freezing. Monday night will be much colder with
lows in the teens and low 20s and wind chills in the single digits
north to teens south. Prolonged periods of sub freezing
temperatures from late tonight into Tuesday morning are possible.
Any exposed pipes, vegetation, or crops will likely be damaged or
frozen during this period.
There area multiple hazards across Deep South Texas in the short
term. There is a Wind Chill Advisory across all of Deep South Texas
until 6 PM. A Winter Storm Warning will be in effect across all of
Deep South Texas, including the lower Texas coast from 6 PM this
evening until 12 PM Monday afternoon, due to expected wintry
precipitation and life threatening conditions. A Wind Chill Warning
will also be in effect across all of Deep South Texas from 6 PM this
evening until 12 PM Monday afternoon, with dangerous wind chill
values expected after midnight. A Wind Advisory will be in effect
along the coast from 6 PM this evening until 3 PM Monday
afternoon.
LONG TERM (Tuesday through Sunday): Temperatures are forecast to
roller coaster a bit in the long-term period, with mild to warm
temperatures finally returning by next weekend. Mid-level zonal
flow will take shape over Deep South Texas by Tuesday morning.
This flow will gradually turn more southwesterly by Wednesday
morning as yet another trough approaches the region from the west.
Its axis will exit and shift east of the region by Thursday
evening, with northwesterly flow aloft prevailing through the
remainder of the week before stagnant and flat zonal flow returns
for next weekend. At the surface, high pressure will be centered
across east Texas on Tuesday morning, before drifting northeast
Tuesday afternoon. As it pushes northeast, local winds will turn
out of the east in the afternoon, helping increase temperatures
and dewpoints.
Another pattern shift will occur starting Wednesday. Deterministic
models show a coastal low developing in the vicinity of the
coastal RGV during the morning hours. It will quickly move north,
up the Texas coast during the day as another surge of strong high
pressure blasts into Texas, pushing through the CWA beginning
Wednesday afternoon or evening. High pressure will continue to
filter in through the day on Thursday. Behind the pressure
surge/cold front, breezy to strong northwest winds will develop
and persist possibly through Thursday evening, especially along
the coast and the offshore waters. After a mild Wednesday, with
highs in the 50s and 60s, cool to cold temperatures will return,
with lows in the 30s and 40s Thursday through Saturday mornings.
The coldest morning looks to be on Friday morning as strong
radiational cooling occurs and drops temperatures into the upper
20s and lower 30s. Freeze and/or Hard Freezing Warnings might be
needed Wednesday night and Thursday night. Additionally Wind Chill
Advisories will likely be needed as well. Southeast winds will
return by Friday afternoon, which will help generate a warming
trend and bring back seasonal normal temperatures by next Saturday
and even above seasonal normal temps by next Sunday.
As far as rain chances in the long-term, a small window for
precipitation will occur starting Tuesday evening as the
aforementioned mid-level trough approaches. Best chances of
precipitation will across northern and eastern portions of the CWA
overnight Tuesday and into Wednesday morning. Another slight
chance of precipitation is possible on the backside of the trough
on Wednesday night, which may produce a slight chance of wintry
weather again for parts of the Northern Ranchlands early Thursday
morning. However, forecast confidence is fairly low on this
occurring at this time.
MARINE (Now through Monday Night): An arctic blast with strong
northerly winds will arrive across the coastal waters this evening.
Small craft should continue to exercise caution on the Laguna Madre
and Gulf waters early this evening prior to stronger winds arriving
with the push of Arctic air later this evening. A Gale Warning is in
effect from 6 PM this evening until 3 PM Monday, with Small Craft
Advisories expected into early Tuesday morning due to continued
elevated seas. Wintry precipitation, including freezing rain, is
expected along the immediate coast Sunday night into Monday morning.
Mariners along the Port of Brownsville or Arroyo Colorado, and along
the immediate coast, may experience light icing.
Tuesday through Friday: Generally favorable marine condition will
prevail at the start of the long-term period as high pressure
dominates across eastern Texas. Favorable conditions will be
short-lived with a tight pressure gradient developing Tuesday
night with southeast winds increasing over the waters. Conditions
will continue to deteriorate Wednesday and into Thursday as a
cold front pushes through on Wednesday afternoon or evening,
increasing north winds and increasing waves on the Gulf waters.
Occasional to frequent gale-force wind gusts may develop late
Wednesday night or early Thursday morning, especially over the
offshore Gulf waters. Strong northerly winds are expected to
continue through late Thursday night. Winds and seas will subside
by Friday morning and marine conditions will improve through the
day on Friday.
