.SYNOPSIS...
A trough of low pressure and an associated cold front approach from
the northwest late Thursday. This trough and frontal boundary slowly
cross the area Friday, bringing cooler conditions and increased
chances of showers and thunderstorms. High pressure builds in from
the northwest over the holiday weekend.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM THIS MORNING/...
As of 940 PM EDT Wednesday...

Latest sfc analysis depicts the Bermuda high to the east and a
trough approaching from the west with a few weak storms in
Louisa county. Convection has struggled so far this evening due
to increasing CIN. High res models continue to suggest isolated
showers/storms may push a little further into the piedmont, and
perhaps the MD portions of the Eastern Shore (although this
scenario is increasingly less likely as much of the original
line of showers/storms has fallen apart) through ~06z Thursday
before dissipating. Will carry slight chc PoPs across those
zones this evening to account for this possibility. Otherwise,
expect another mostly clear/partly cloudy and muggy night with
lows in the lower to mid 70s.

.SHORT TERM /6 AM THIS MORNING THROUGH SATURDAY NIGHT/...
As of 320 PM EDT Wednesday...

Models show the upr ridge breaking down pushing the ridge axis
offshore Thurs. This allows a potent upr trof to dive se into the Gt
lakes region. Day begins mstly sunny which allows enough
heating for temps to jump back into the upr 80s-lwr 90s. Models
then show convection dvlpng ahead/along the leading trof after
18Z, pushing se thru the late aftrn.

Given the above scenario, SPC has upgraded areas across the Va nrn
neck and ern shore to a SLGHT risk while the rest of the fa north of
the NC/VA border in a MRGNL svr risk. Main threat is for damaging
wind gusts given 35-40 kt in the 700-500 mb layer, richer low-level
moisture and steepened 0-2 km lapse rates. Locally heavy downpours
will also be psbl given PW's arnd 2 inches. PoPs quickly ramp up
during the aftrn.

The svr threat diminishes Thurs eve but pcpn conts as the cold front
merges up with the leading trof. In addition, models show s/w energy
riding ne along this bndry keeping high PoPs Thurs night/Fri
morning. Pcpn begins to taper off from NW to SE Fri aftrn/eve as
the entire systm shifts se. Thunder chcs will continue thru Fri
though the svr threat will diminish. Main concern will be
locally hvy rainfall from training echoes Thurs night/Fri. WPC
conts to have areas just north of the AKQ fa in a day2 ERO SLGHT
risk with MRGNL risk farther se.

Will hold off on any flood watch attm given the ff guidance (2+ in
per hour) across the north and two separate rounds of convection
expected over the next 72 hrs. Would like to see how much
rainfall falls with the leading convection late Thurs first.
Lows Thurs night mid 60s-lwr 70s. Cooler Fri with highs mid 70s
nw to lwr 80s se. Lows Fri night in the 60s.

The steady pcpn exits Sat but lingering upr lvl energy will likely
be the trigger for at least slght chc PoPs Sat aftrn/eve with the
highest PoPs along the ne coast. Highs Sat 80-85. Lows Sat night
in the 60s.

.LONG TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
As of 120 PM EDT Wednesday...

Models show high pressure building back over the region early next
week. In addition, a sfc trof lingers just off the coast Sun/Mon
with a lee trof developing by Tue/Wed. GFS/ECMWF not to excited
about pcpn during the time frame east of the mts, with only sct
activity mainly north/west of the local area thru Tue. Some convection
progged to make it east of the Blue Ridge by mid week.

Dry wx expected for the holiday Sun/Sun night. Highs in the 80s
except near 80 at the beaches. Lows 65-70. Warming back up
Mon/Tue with highs 85-90 Mon and upr 80s-lwr 90s Tue. Lows mid
60s-lwr 70s. Low chc late day PoPs Wed. Highs upr 80s-lwr 90s.

.AVIATION /06Z THURSDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
As of 155 AM EDT Thursday...

High pressure remains centered well off the Southeast coast as
of 06z, with low pressure over Atlantic Canada and an associated
cold front extending to the SW into the Ohio Valley. Partly
cloudy to mostly clear, with isolated showers/tstms well N of
RIC and well W of SBY. VFR conditions prevail through 18z at
RIC/SBY, closer to 00z for PHF/ORF, and after 00z for ECG.
Showers/tstms develop ahead of the approaching cold front this
afternoon from RIC to SBY, and then spread toward PHF/ORF later
in the afternoon to early evening, and then more into tonight
for ECG. The front will be slow moving, so showers and embedded
tstms will continue tonight for most of the area. Cigs are
expected to lower tonight, with MVFR likely, and IFR possible.
Occasional IFR/LIFR vsby is likely in heavy rain.

The front will be slow to cross the region Friday with
showers/tstms and degraded flight conditions continuing. Drier
conditions arrive by Saturday and Independence Day, with only a
minimal chc of afternoon/evening showers/tstms Saturday, and
mainly dry conditions by Sunday. Dry conditions continue into
early next week as high pressure aloft spreads over the area.

.MARINE...
As of 320 PM EDT Wednesday...

A lee trough will continue to sharpen over inland areas late this
afternoon with an associated tightening of the pressure gradient and
increased SW flow. Some high-res guidance is still showing winds 15-
20 kt in the lower bay/Currituck Sound and coastal waters overnight
into the early morning hours of Thursday. Given relatively short
duration, marginal magnitude and limited certainty, will not raise
any SCAs with this forecast package. Lee trough strengthens on
Thursday with the approach of an upper trough, allowing increased SW
winds to continue along with chances for showers and thunderstorms.
SCAs will likely be needed for the lower Bay and Currituck Sound
Thursday night for SW winds 15-20 kt and gusts to 25 kt. Seas build
to 4-5 ft by Thursday afternoon north of Cape Charles and maintains
these levels into Friday morning. Additional showers and storms are
possible on Friday ahead of a cold front that is expected to cross
the waters overnight into Saturday. Thereafter, more benign marine
conditions are expected for the holiday weekend as flow turns NW.
