through today, then off the Virginia coast tonight. High
pressure returns for the weekend.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/...
As of 355 AM EST Friday...
A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect through midnight for
Lunenburg and Mecklenburg counties for 1 to 2 inches of snow.
Early this morning, ~1009 mb low pressure is located near the SC/GA
coast. This low will deepen and track along the SC/NC coast today
before tracking off the coast later this evening. Mid and high level
clouds continue to filter into the area from the SW in advance of
the system, allowing for temperatures to level off/slightly rise
this morning. Temperatures are generally in the low to mid 30s
(upper 30s to lower 40s SE), with not much change expected. A band
of mid-level frontogenesis is still forecast to move into northern
NC/southern VA over the next few hours which will allow for snow
(particularly across the SW Piedmont). This band will be fighting dry
air aloft, mainly in the 800-900 mb region as seen on the latest
forecast soundings, thus initial precipitation will start out as
virga (as currently seen on the KAKQ radar). Still expecting the dry
air to be overcome across the south, but continued uncertainty
further north across our area.
After sunrise, PoPs increase to around 60-70% in the SW and up to 30-
40% all the way to RIC through the late morning/early afternoon as
the column saturates and precipitation makes it to the ground. PoPs
in the SE increase to 50-70% in the afternoon/evening. Precipitation
in the western half of the FA should start as snow this morning,
changing to a rain/snow mix late morning into the early afternoon as
temps rise into the mid to upper 30s. For this afternoon through
early evening, precip type will depend on intensity with heavier
bands bringing down colder temps to the surface for all snow and
lighter bands staying a rain/snow mix or light rain. Expect minimal
additional accumulations from late morning through the afternoon as
temps remain above freezing in most locations. Snow chances increase
after sunset as temps fall from the mid to upper 30s to the low to
mid 30s (possibly to around freezing in any heavier bands). Farther
E, a possible rain/snow mix will change to all rain later this
morning into the afternoon as forecast high temperatures are in the
upper 30s to low 40s. Cooler air filters into the area by Friday
evening turning any lingering pcpn to snow from NW-SE.
Lowered snow accumulations a touch across the far SW as the highest
QPF appears to stay just SW of the local area. Still have a general
0.5" to 1" over the SW Piedmont, with the best probabilities of
seeing 1" + across SW Mecklenburg and Lunenburg counties (where the
Winter Weather Advisory is currently in effect). Elsewhere,
generally a few tenths to around 0.5" for south central VA and
interior northeast NC. Still have the possibility for a a tenth of an
inch or two across the I-64 corridor from RIC into the
Peninsula.

.SHORT TERM /6 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH SUNDAY NIGHT/...
As of 355 AM EST Friday...
Some lingering precip is expected tonight across SE VA and NE NC as
the low pulls away. Precip changes from rain to a brief period of
rain/snow mix before coming to an end. Little to no accumulation is
expected. All precipitation moves offshore later tonight with
clearing skies in the W by around sunrise. High pressure builds
across the region for the weekend allowing for drier conditions.
Partly to mostly sunny skies are expected on Saturday with highs in
the low to mid 40s. Mostly clear Saturday night with low
temperatures in the mid 20s to low 30s. Mostly sunny Sunday with
high temperatures in the mid to upper 40s.

.LONG TERM /MONDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
As of 210 PM EST Thursday...
Dry/seasonable conditions continue into Monday before the next
system impacts the area around Monday night or Tuesday of next
week. Fairly large model spread at this point with the
operational GFS not bringing pcpn in until after 12z Tues and
most of it being confined to SE VA and NE NC. Euro and even the
GEFS favor pcpn arriving Monday night and spreading across the
area Tuesday morning before ending in the afternoon. Favored the
later solution as far as PoPs. Then next concern is then ptype
which given thermal profiles will again favor a wintry mix
Monday night/Tuesday morning for the N/NW portions of our FA.
All rain elsewhere. Overall, the trend continues to be warmer
with this next system. Highs Monday in the 40s after morning
lows in the mid 20s to low 30s. Highs Tuesday and Wednesday
mainly in the 40s with low temps at night in the 30s.

.AVIATION /12Z FRIDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
As of 635 AM EST Friday...
VFR conditions to start off the 12z TAF period, but at least
MVFR conditions are possible at all TAF sites (outside of SBY)
later this morning into this afternoon and evening.
This morning, a storm system is approaching the region from the
southwest, allowing for mid and higher level clouds to move
into the region. Ceilings will continue to lower this morning as
surface low pressure tracks along the NC/SC coast. By later
this morning/this afternoon MVFR ceilings (best chances mainly
RIC and south) are expected. RIC will likely just see a brief
window of MVFR ceilings around ~17z. MVFR ceilings stick around
through the evening for southern VA/northeast NC. There is the
potential for IFR ceilings as well across far southern
VA/northeast NC (impacting ECG primarily) later this afternoon
into this evening. In addition, rain showers (and possible
rain/snow mix late) may restrict visibilities at times. SBY
stays dry/VFR through the forecast period.
Outlook: Low pressure will move off the coast tonight. High
pressure builds across the area over the weekend. Another low
pressure system potentially arrives by early next week.

As of 400 AM EST Thursday...
Early AM Afternoon wx analysis shows high pressure over eastern
PA, with ~1008 mb low pressure now just off the SC coast. Winds
are relatively light across the local marine area from the N to
NE at 5-10kt. Seas have dropped off to 2-3 ft N and 3-4 ft S.
The low is then expected to deepen as it continues to track off
the Carolina coast later today and tonight. The low pushes well
off the northern NC/southern VA coast on Saturday. NNE winds
increase through the day today with sustained wind speeds
reaching 15-20 kt N/20- 25 kt S by evening. Winds turn to the N
then NNW later tonight with speeds increasing to 20-25 kt on
the bay/ocean (perhaps briefly reaching 25-28 kt over the NC
coastal waters). Have raised SCA headlines for the
Bay/Ocean/Lower James/Currituck Sound later today (generally
earliest S and latest across the N). While a few gale gusts will
be possible across the far southern coastal waters, local wind
probs for this are still only 30-40% and with the sfc low
progged to be well south, have decided against any Gale
headlines. There is also a chc for a brief period of SCAs on
the upper rivers tonight but confidence in this is low and if it
does occur it will be marginal so did not raise headlines in
these zones w/ this forecast package. Seas will build once
again with this system, increasing to 5 to 6 feet N and to 7-9
feet S. later tonight into early Saturday. Have gone a bit
higher than NWPS/WaveWatch for seas Fri evening- early Sat AM
across the srn coastal waters given the moderately strong NNE-N-
NNW wind. NNW-NW winds diminish to 15-20 kt by Sat aftn, with
marginal SCA level winds on the bay still possible through a
good portion of Saturday night as the sfc high is still W of the
Appalachians. Seas likely linger in excess of 5 feet for much
of the weekend. High pressure builds in from the northwest from
Sun- Mon and wind speeds diminish to 5-10 kt by Sunday night.
Another low pressure system potentially impacts the area by
Tuesday, but trends are for this to be a bit more suppressed so
generally have lowered winds/waves/seas for Tue (though not to
the extent of what the GFS would suggest).

today (it may get close at Bishop's Head). An increasing NNE
wind will likely cause anomalies to increase a bit more across
the lower Bay and Atlantic coast of SE VA/NE NC tonight into
early Saturday morning. Latest TWl forecast has a few sites
reaching low-end minor flood levels in a few locations
(generally from Sewell's Pt to the Atlantic coast of Currituck
County) during high tide Saturday morning.
