.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM THIS MORNING/...
As of 1000 PM EST Thursday...
Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect from 4 AM Fri through
midnight Fri night for Lunenburg and Mecklenburg counties for
up to 2 inches of snow.
The upper low moves across northern MS/AL/GA tonight. Meanwhile,
surface high pressure continues to prevail this evening, before
shifting nwd overnight as surface low pressure organizes in vicinity
of the SC coast. Mostly clear NE with some high clouds SW this
evening. Cloud cover will thicken as mid and high clouds move in
overnight from SW to NE. Temperatures should drop quickly after
sunset with mostly clear skies and the become steady overnight as
clouds increase. Forecast lows range from the upper 20s NE (where
mainly clear conditions exist longer), to the low 30s elsewhere. Dry
conditions are expected through 4 AM. A band of mid-level
frontogenesis moves north into northern NC/southern VA late tonight
into early Friday morning and may produce some snow (particularly
across the SW piedmont) after 4 AM. As this band lifts north, it
will encounter increasingly dry air aloft (in the 800-900 mb region)
due to the aforementioned high pressure over the area. Therefore,
expect initial precipitation to be virga as snow aloft evaporates as
it works to saturate the column of air. Dry air aloft will be able
to be overcome in the south, but uncertainty increase the further N
you go as to whether or not this band of snow will reach the surface
or not. Have therefore introduced 40-50% PoPs for snow in the
extreme SW and only slight chance PoPs (15-20%) from Amelia county
and NE.

.SHORT TERM /6 AM THIS MORNING THROUGH 6 PM SATURDAY/...
As of 340 PM EST Thursday...
After sunrise, PoPs increase to 70-80% in the SW and up to 30-40%
all the way to RIC through the late morning/early afternoon as the
column saturates and precipitation makes it to the ground. PoPs in
the SE increase to 50-70% in the afternoon/evening. Precipitation in
the western half of the FA should start as snow Friday morning,
changing to a rain/snow mix late morning into the early afternoon as
temps rise into the mid to upper 30s. For Friday afternoon through
early evening, precip type will depend on intensity with heavier
bands bringing down colder temps to the surface for all snow and
lighter bands staying a rain/snow mix or light rain. Expect minimal
additional accumulations from late morning through the afternoon as
temps remain above freezing in most locations. Snow chances increase
after sunset as temps fall from the mid to upper 30s to the low to
mid 30s (possibly to around freezing in any heavier bands). Farther
E, a possible rain/snow mix will change to all rain midday Friday
into the afternoon as forecast high temperatures are in the upper
30s to low 40s. Cooler air filters into the area by Friday evening
turning any lingering pcpn to snow from NW-SE.
The surface low tracks NE off the Carolina coastlines Friday and
then off the VA coast Friday night. There is a potential that some
vertical ascent develops with frontogenesis Friday evening to the NW
flank of the surface low, as the upper system lags to the W. This
would maintain some pcpn into s-central and eastern VA and NE NC
into Friday evening, and perhaps through the overnight hours over
extreme SE VA/NE NC. The models still show considerable spread with
this feature, although the general trend has been a decrease in
moisture/snow on the backside of the system due to a slight S trend
of the low. The best chance of any additional snowfall/precip will
be in NE NC as the low pulls away and temps begin to fall. All
precipitation moves offshore Friday night with clearing skies in the
W by around sunrise.
Total snow accumulation forecast is mainly 0.5-1.0" over the SW
Piedmont (except a bullseye of 1-2" in Lunenburg and Mecklenburg
where the best banding is expected to take place), with a few tenths
to around 0.5" for s-central VA, and Northampton, NC, and a light
coating farther E. If the wrap-around banding is stronger and/or
further north in the evening, then up to 0.5" of snow could occur in
NE NC (0.5-1.0" in Northampton, NC). Cooler late Friday night with
lows in the mid to upper 20s N, upper 20s for most, and low 30s near
the coast.

.LONG TERM /SATURDAY NIGHT THROUGH THURSDAY/...
As of 210 PM EST Thursday...
Given the quicker timing of the 12z models in taking the upper
low offshore before 12z Sat, will not carry any PoPs on Saturday
and the weekend is looking dry but seasonably chilly with high
pressure in control.
Partly to mostly sunny Saturday with high temperatures in the
low/mid 40s. Mostly clear Saturday night with low temperatures
in the mid 20s to low 30s. Mostly sunny Sunday with high
temperatures in the mid to upper 40s.
Dry/seasonable conditions continue into Monday before the next
system impacts the area around Monday night or Tuesday of next
week. Fairly large model spread at this point with the
operational GFS not bringing pcpn in until after 12z Tues and
most of it being confined to SE VA and NE NC. Euro and even the
GEFS favor pcpn arriving Monday night and spreading across the
area Tuesday morning before ending in the afternoon. Favored the
later solution as far as PoPs. Then next concern is then ptype
which given thermal profiles will again favor a wintry mix
Monday night/Tuesday morning for the N/NW portions of our FA.
All rain elsewhere. Overall, the trend continues to be warmer
with this next system. Highs Monday in the 40s after morning
lows in the mid 20s to low 30s. Highs Tuesday and Wednesday
mainly in the 40s with low temps at night in the 30s.

.AVIATION /06Z FRIDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
As of 130 AM EST Friday...
VFR conditions to start off the 06z TAF period, but at least
MVFR conditions are possible at all TAF sites (outside of SBY)
as we head through this morning and today.
Early this morning, a storm system is approaching the region
from the southwest, allowing for mid and higher level clouds to
move into the region. Ceilings will continue to lower this
morning as surface low pressure tracks across the Carolinas. By
later this morning/this afternoon MVFR ceilings (best chances
mainly RIC and south) are expected. RIC will likely just see a
brief window of MVFR ceilings around ~17z while the MVFR
ceilings stick around for much of the remaining forecast period
for southern VA/northeast NC. There is the potential for IFR
ceilings across far southern VA/northeast NC (impacting ECG
primarily) later this afternoon into this evening. In addition,
a mixture of rain and snow moves into the region which may
reduce visbilities at times. SBY stays dry/VFR through the
forecast period.
Outlook: Low pressure will move off the coast Friday night.
High pressure builds across the area over the weekend. Another
low pressure system potentially arrives by early next week.

As of 315 PM EST Thursday...
Afternoon wx analysis shows high pressure over eastern NC, with
~1008 mb low pressure over the Deep South. NW winds have diminished
to 10-15 kt over the waters. Seas are still 3 to 5 feet due to
residual swell from low pressure well NE of the area. Waves on the
bay are generally 1-2 feet. Small Craft Advisories for the coastal
waters remain unchanged, expiring at 7 PM this evening (north) and 1
AM tonight (south). After collaboration with neighboring offices,
will hold off on issuing any new marine headlines until the current
ones expire or are cancelled. The weak high is progged to move
offshore tonight while the low over the Deep South approaches the
coast of South Carolina. NW winds become N by 12z Fri with speeds
averaging 10-15 kt. Seas should fall below SCA criteria across all
zones by 06z.
The low is then expected to deepen as it tracks off the Carolina
coast Friday and Friday night. The low then slowly tracks ENE off
the srn Mid-Atlantic coast on Saturday. NNE winds increase through
the day on Friday with sustained wind speeds reaching 15-20 kt N/20-
25 kt S by evening. Winds turn to the N then NNW Friday night with
speeds increasing to 20-25 kt on the bay/ocean (perhaps briefly
reaching 25-28 kt over the far srn coastal waters). Confidence in
SCA conditions for the bay/ocean/Lower James remains very high, and
there is a slight chance for a few gale gusts, especially across the
far southern coastal waters. There is also a chc for a brief period
of marginal SCAs on the upper rivers Friday night. No Gale Watch
attm but it is worth noting that local wind probabilities for 34 kt
gusts reach 40-60% for a couple of hours across the southernmost
coastal zone. Cannot rule out a few 35 kt gusts at elevated sites in
the mouth of the bay/SE VA coastal waters from 00-09z Friday as
well. Seas will build once again with this system, increasing to 5

marginal SCA level winds on the bay through a good portion of
Saturday night. Seas likely linger in excess of 5 feet for much of
the weekend. High pressure builds in from the northwest from Sun-Mon
and wind speeds diminish to 5-10 kt by Sunday night. Another low
pressure system potentially impacts the area by Tuesday.

While tidal anomalies are elevated across the bay (averaging
1.2 to 1.5 ft above normal), no coastal flooding is expected
through Friday. A moderately strong NNE-N wind will likely allow
anomalies to increase across the lower Bay and Atlantic coast
of SE VA/NE NC from late Friday through early Saturday morning.
This may result in nuisance to minor tidal flooding in a few
locations (generally from Sewell's Pt to the Atlantic coast of
Currituck County) during high tide Saturday morning.
