tonight, followed by another cold front crossing the region
Saturday night. High pressure builds back across the local area
Sunday, with mild, mainly dry weather to continue for much of
next week.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TODAY/...
As of 935 PM EST Thursday...
1026mb surface high pressure is centered along the Mid-Atlantic
coast this evening. The sky is clear this evening, and the wind
is calm to very light. This has allowed temperatures to drop
quickly with readings in the upper 20s to low 30s for most
locations (mid 30s to around 40F for immediate coastlines).
Clouds developing over central NC this evening are expected to
spread NE overnight as WAA develops in association with a warm
front. Overnight low temperatures are likely to occur from late
this evening into the early overnight hours (1-2 AM), and likely
ranging from the mid 20s to around 30F inland, with mid/upper
30s along the immediate coastlines. Temperatures are expected to
become steady, and then slowly rise toward morning as cloud
cover increases and light SSE flow develops as the high nudges
offshore.
Lower clouds move in tomorrow ahead of the front and will
remain broken through the day. The lower clouds will keep
temperatures cool in the low to mid 50s. The SE part of our
forecast area will be a tad warmer, with max temps in the upper
50s to lower 60s.

.SHORT TERM /TONIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY NIGHT/...
As of 150 PM EST Thursday...
The warm front lifts north across the area Fri night, and will
be well to our N by Sat morning. We've continued a slight to
lower-end chance PoP (20-30%) for some light rain showers
tomorrow evening, in association with some isentropic lift
pushing toward the local area from the western Carolinas. QPF
would be low, but will trend toward a cloudier/milder night
tomorrow night per model trends. Lows Friday night will be
quite a bit milder than previous nights with increasing clouds
and southerly winds. In fact, expect lows to occur during the
late evening, mainly in the upper 40s to near 50 NW to mid to
upper 50s SE, with slowly rising temperatures (and dew points)
during the remainder of the night.
Meanwhile, strong low pressure deepens to ~980mb as it tracks
from the central plains/middle MO Valley to the upper midwest
and upper Great Lakes by Sat morning. That surface low will
continue to deepen from Saturday into Saturday night, as it
lifts across Ontario and western Quebec. The trailing surface
cold front will approach the area on Saturday before crossing
the FA from NW to SE Sat evening-Sat night. Despite considerable
cloud cover through the day, a mild start to the day and strong
warm air advection ahead of the front, expect a warm day to the
local area on Saturday. Highs in the low to mid 70s over inland
areas are expected Saturday, with upper 60s to low 70s near the
coast. These temperatures will challenge established record high
temperatures across the area, and expect at least one or two
daily record Maxs will be broken on Sat, most likely at RIC/SBY.

Additionally, a strengthening 950-850mb jet will allow some
strong gusts to mix down over land areas during peak heating.
Southwesterly winds are expected to be 20-25mph, with gusts of
30-40mph well supported by in-house wind probability guidance.
As far as timing the front and the rain, 12z/9 NCEP models
(GFS/NAM) remain quickest with the FROPA, but they have trended
a bit slower/closer to the CMC/ECMWF, which are now only few
hours slower. Only made minor changes are needed to the going
forecast, and will continue with high- end likely PoPs (60-70%)
for the entire area Sat night, as the front swings across the
area. Expect a broken line of gusty anafrontal showers to cross
the area into early Sunday morning. Given only very limited
instability and evening/late night timing, will continue to
hold out thunder from the forecast, though it should be noted
that a convective Marginal Risk from SPC is in place across our
piedmont counties, again with the primary threat coming from
isolated damaging wind gusts from those showers late Sat into
Sat evening. QPF remains generally on the order of a tenth to
quarter of an inch, mainly falling Sat night. Lows Sat night
range from the mid 30s NW to low 40s SE.

A cooler and markedly drier airmass pushes across the local area
early next week. The upper trough axis/cold front pushes well
offshore, with quasi-zonal flow re-developing across the eastern
one-third of the CONUS. Surface high pressure builds over the
area on Sunday and remains near the area through early next week
before moving offshore by the middle of the week. Ridging aloft
starts to builds over the SE CONUS, with a broad ~590 dm
anticyclone potentially near the FL Panhandle by the middle of
next week. Expect a slow warming trend and dry wx from Sun
through Wed. Daytime highs generally in the 50s on Sun/Mon,
with high forecast confidence that highs rise back above normal
into the 60s for the middle of next week. Overnight lows are
forecast to be in the upper 20s- low 30s Sun night, with 30s
to near 40 expected Mon/Tue nights, with 40s Wed/Thu nights.

.AVIATION /05Z FRIDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
As of 1220 AM EST Friday...
High pressure is now centered just offshore of the area, with
light winds and VFR conditions. BKN-OVC CIGs of 3500-6000ft AGL
are expected to arrive at the terminals by 07-10z and persist
through the day as a warm front moves through the area. Light to
moderate rain showers are possible (mainly at RIC/PHF/SBY)
later today into the first part of tonight, but only brief MVFR
VSBYs are expected at worst with these showers. Given that PoPs
are only 20-50% at the terminals, will hold off on any mention
of pcpn in the TAFs. Cloud cover will linger tonight with a good
chc of MVFR CIGs at all of the terminals. The wind will
generally be S to SW at 5-8kt through the period.
A cold front approaches from the W Saturday and moves through the
area during the evening. A breezy SW wind is expected Saturday, with
gusts up to 25-35kt possible from late morning into the afternoon.
There is a chc of quick moving showers with the front Saturday
evening. High pressure builds into the area Sunday through
Tuesday bringing dry and VFR conditions.

As of 315 PM EST Thursday...
High pressure was centered over the local waters this afternoon with
wind becoming E/SE 5-10 kt. High pressure will gradually drift
offshore through tonight with winds becoming SE later this
afternoon. Winds become S 10-15 kt tonight, remaining S/SSW through
Fri. Waves remain 1-2 ft through Fri. Seas of 2-3 ft N and 3-4 ft S
subside to 2-3 ft tonight through Fri.
High pressure remains offshore through Sat with a warm front lifting
N Fri evening/Fri night. Strong WAA is expected behind the front
with S/SSW low level flow increasing Fri night through Sat evening
ahead of strong cold front. SCAs will be needed for Sat into at
least early Sun and could start as early as late Fri night as winds
increase to 15-20 kt. However, given that winds are not expected to
reach SCA threshold until the very end of the 4th period and might
not begin until the 5th period, will hold off on hoisting headlines
until tonight's update. Winds will continue to increase Sat with
S/SSW winds 15-25 kt for most of the waters and gusts to around 30
kt possible over the coastal waters. A few gusts to around 35 kt
will be possible over the northern coastal waters with this WAA but
will likely not be frequent enough for Gale headlines. A strong cold
front is forecast to cross the local waters Sat evening and guidance
is pointing to a strong push of low level CAA in its wake which
would lead to high end SCAs and/or perhaps a brief period of gale-
force gusts Sat night. However, given the progressive nature of the
front, expect any gale-force gusts to be fairly brief with an SMW
likely being better suited to handle the surge as opposed to a Gale
Warning. Seas increase to 4-5 ft S and 5-8 ft N Sat into Sun with
the highest seas Sat night. Seas are expected to subside by Sun
afternoon.
