As of 820 PM EST Tuesday...
Latest MSAS has a s/w trof moving across the ern shore with a
trailing cold front moving pushing east across the area. Any
showeractivity will push off the Delmarva coast over the next
hour or so with the cold front pushing offshore shortly there
after.
CAA already spreading in from the nw on gusty NW winds and
crashing dew point temps behind the fropa. The sct-bkn clouds
will move east as well resulting in a mstly clr nite and colder
nite ahead. Lows in the 20s except arnd 30 sern coastal areas.
PVS DSCN:
The arctic high will shift toward the Eastern Great Lakes and
New England Wednesday and build into the Mid- Atlantic. Mostly
sunny and cool with high temperatures ranging from the upper 30s
NE, to the mid 40s SW, along with a light NE wind. Quite dry
Wednesday with dewpoints in the teens to low 20s.

.SHORT TERM /TONIGHT THROUGH FRIDAY/...
As of 410 PM EST Tuesday...
Another winter storm will impact the region late Wednesday
night through Thursday night with the potential very substantial
impacts due to ice, especially across the Piedmont.
Have expanded the Winter Storm Watch from the Piedmont counties
to the I-95 corridor, and NE for interior portions of the
Northern Neck and Middle Peninsula. A row of counties along the
Bay is not in the watch due to easterly flow, as well as the MD
Ern Shore and Accomack County. However, these areas still have a
threat for a minor snow/sleet accumulation and some icing away
from the coast. All watches begin at 06z Thursday, with the
northwest segment running through 11z Friday, the SW portion
through 06z Friday, the middle/NE portion through 23z Thursday,
and the SE portion through noon Thursday.
The strong surface high (~1035mb) will continue to keep a
supply of very cold/dry air from the N Thursday (at least
through the morning hrs). As the high shifts NE to the St
Lawrence Valley/northern New England by late Thursday/Thursday
night, there appears to be just enough low level warming from
the I-95 corridor and points E to have the p-type change over to
plain rain. For sfc temperatures Thursday, continued to follow
close to the NAM/GFS sfc wet bulb values which clearly depict
the typical delayed warming that occurs in these type of
patterns (i.e temperatures staying at or below 32F in the
Piedmont for several hrs longer than what a model blend will
show). Where the uncertainty lies is probably more in exact
p-type rather than temperatures in the low levels. The 12Z suite
of models have trended colder, with most guidance suggesting a
period of snow/sleet (possibly predominate sleet for a few
hours), followed by freezing rain. All guidance continues to
place a heavy emphasis on significant icing for the I-85
corridor that was particularly hard hit in the last event. There
is an overall trend for strong easterly flow at or above 900mb
to drive a substantial warm nose inland that will result in a
change to freezing rain for all areas by Thursday aftn. This
process will also help drive pcpn rates.
A blend of forecast model scenarios yields up to 2-3" of
snowfall across the far N/NW zones (most of this late Wednesday
night and morning and 3-5" possible for far NW Louisa), with
0.25" to nearly 0.50" (and possible higher) of ice across most
of the AKQ Piedmont counties. Even in excess of 0.25" is
possible in the RIC metro. For now, maintained snow/sleet
amounts around 1" or less except over the far northern tier. The
MD Eastern Shore will need to be monitored as a quick 1-2" of
snow is possible NW of SBY if moisture spreads far enough into
the cold air. The SE portion of the watch area includes
locations that have 0.1-0.25" ice forecast and a few tenths of
an inch of snow. These area have the most uncertainty for
warning criteria, but there is enough potential to have the area
in a watch. Highs Thursday will be 30-32F range in the
Piedmont, low/mid 30s metro RIC, with upper 40s/around 50F
across the far SE. Another period of freezing rain is possible
over the Piedmont (and possibly to the I-95 corridor) Thursday
night as a second wave tracks along the coast, and potentially
drags some cooler air back S in northerly flow. Additional rain
will fall across SE portions.
Another issue will be flooding. Forecast QPF is ~1.5" with
localized amounts up to 2" possible Thursday into Thursday
night. A flood watch may eventually be necessary due to to
combination of expected rainfall and very saturated ground.
A cold front crosses the region late Thursday night/Friday
morning w/ low temps ranging from around 30F NW to the m40s SE,
with highs Friday in the mid/upper 40s, with PoPs diminishing
from NW-SE in the morning.

.LONG TERM /FRIDAY NIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY/...
As of 410 PM EST Tuesday...
Cold front exits the coast Friday morning to be followed by
drying and colder wx into the weekend. With the upper trough
still not crossing the area until later Fri, will hang onto
lingering low end PoPs along the coast eastern VA and coastal NE
NC Friday evening. Lows Fri night from the teens NW to the
upper 20s SE. High pressure reaches the local area from the W
late Sat then exits to the E Sun night. Cold Sat with highs in
the mid 30s to around 40. Diminishing winds Sat night will make
for a cold night under a clear sky with lows ranging from the
mid teens NW to the mid-upper 20s far SE. Some moderation begins
Sun as winds become SSW (highs mostly in the low to mid 40s). A
cold front approaches from the W Sun night then crosses the FA
Mon (though the exact timing of that frontal passage uncertain
attm). Dry wx Sat-Sun then an increased prob for rain on Monday.
Lows Sun night in the upr 20s NW to the low-mid 30s SE. Highs
Mon in the upr 40s to low 50s N to the mid 50s in NE NC.

.AVIATION /06Z WEDNESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
As of 1230 AM EST Wednesday...
Mainly VFR conditions prevail early this morning but there are
some BKN clouds with MVFR CIGs around 2500 ft downwind from the
Bay over southside Hampton Roads for the next few hrs. Otherwise,
VFR conditions will prevail through today and into early this
evening, with winds becoming NE at 10-15kt along the coast and
5-10kt inland. High clouds increase later today ahead of the
next system approaching from the SW. After 03Z/Thu, some MVFR
CIGs will be possible at ECG, and will begin to spread N
through 06Z. Precip is expected to hold off until after the 06Z
TAF period at main terminals.
OUTLOOK...
Conditions deteriorate significantly after 06Z/Thu as the next
low approaches from the SW and tracks across the FA during the
day Thu. Expect widespread IFR/LIFR flight restrictions Thu
into Thu night. NE winds will gust to 25-30kt near the coast on
Thu. Mainly rain expected at ORF/PHF/ECG (a brief mix possible
at the onset early Thu). SBY will have a longer period Thu
morning with a potential mixed p-type and RIC could see SN/IP
changing to freezing rain followed by rain later in the aftn.
Another wave could bring another round of rain Thurs night, and
this could turn back over the freezing rain at RIC before ending
Fri morning. Conditions improve Fri but winds will become gusty
from the NW Fri aftn into early Sat. High pressure settles
across the area late Sat through Sun with VFR/dry conditions and
less wind.

Winds will be NW to N 15-25 kt with gusts up to 30 kt behind a
cold front into Wed morning. Waves in the bay 2-4 ft and seas
4-6 ft. After a brief respite on Wed, with high pressure
building in from the north, a system originating from the Gulf
will impact the region Thu into Fri morning resulting in
additional SCA for winds/seas. High pressure will build into and
over the area later Fri into Sun, with SCAs possible for most
of the waters Fri night through Sat.
