one to two feet of inundation above ground level possible in
low-lying areas near shorelines and tidal waterways.

EDT Saturday. For the Coastal Flood Watch, from Friday morning
through Saturday morning.
* IMPACTS...Numerous roads may be closed. Low lying property
including homes, businesses, and some critical infrastructure
may be inundated. Some shoreline erosion may occur. Dangerous

through late Friday night.
* IMPACTS...Numerous roads may be closed. Low lying property
including homes, businesses, and some critical infrastructure
may be inundated. Some shoreline erosion may occur. Dangerous
swimming and surfing conditions and localized beach erosion.
* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Erosion and damage to dune structures is
expected. Actions should be taken to protect property along

* IMPACTS...Widespread flooding of vulnerable areas will result in
an elevated threat of property damage to homes and businesses near
the waterfront and shoreline. Water will be 1 to 2 feet above ground
level in some areas resulting in a sufficient depth to close numerous
roads and threaten homes and businesses. Flooding will extend inland
from the waterfront along tidal rivers and bays resulting in some

* IMPACTS...Numerous roads may be closed. Low lying property
including homes, businesses, and some critical infrastructure
may be inundated. Some shoreline erosion may occur. Dangerous
swimming and surfing conditions and localized beach erosion.

expected. Actions should be taken to protect property along
the immediate shoreline. Beach erosion and damage to dune
structures could occur through the weekend...even after the

in an elevated threat of property damage to homes and
businesses near the waterfront and shoreline. Water will be up

sufficient depth to close numerous roads and threaten homes
and businesses. Flooding will extend inland from the
waterfront along tidal rivers and bays resulting in some road
closures and flooding of vehicles.

an elevated threat of property damage to homes and businesses
near the waterfront and shoreline. Water will be 1 to 2 feet
above ground level in some areas resulting in a sufficient depth
to close numerous roads and threaten homes and businesses.
Flooding will extend inland from the waterfront along tidal
rivers and bays resulting in some road closures and flooding of
vehicles.

A warm front will lift north into southern Virginia this
afternoon as low pressure pushes into the central Appalachians.
A strong cold front will sweep through the Mid-Atlantic late
tonight, with upper level low pressure tracking across the
region Friday. High pressure builds in from the northwest over
the weekend.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
As of 1120 AM EDT Thursday...
Forecast is largely on track this morning. Low stratus is
widespread across the region with temperatures mostly in the
50s. Some lingering upper 40s are noted across the far NW with
upper 50s and low 60s across the far south. Expecting the
residual wedge airmass to be slow to dislodge this afternoon
with continued low ceilings and occasional light rainfall. PoPs
are highest across the west this afternoon with lower chances to
the south and southeast through 4-5PM. Recent CAM guidance does
show the potential for storms increasing across the southeastern
half of the area after 18z but coverage will be scattered
initially. Think the bulk of the severe weather threat will
come from roughly 3-11pm today and will be focused near and
south of the I-64 corridor and especially south of US-460 where
greater instability will reside. The main convective threats
continue to be the potential for strong to severe straight line
winds and tornadoes with hail a lesser concern and likely
confined to only the strongest rotating cells late this
afternoon and tonight.
Previous Discussion as of 410 AM EDT Thursday:
A very active weather pattern is expected today through Friday,
with the potential for severe thunderstorms across southern
VA/NE NC later this afternoon/early evening, strong wind gusts
along the coast late tonight/early Friday morning, and the
potential for some wet snow Friday morning through midday.
Early this morning, a powerful southern stream upper low is
spinning over MO/AR, with surface low pressure across the Mid-
Mississippi Valley. Surface high pressure is centered off the
Mid-Atlantic coast, with a warm front well S of the region
across GA/SC. The local area remain locked in a residual CAD
airmass with widespread stratus and some patchy fog.
Temperatures range from the mid 40s NW to the low 50s SE. Rain
is spreading in from the west ahead of the west in a region of
mid-level WAA well ahead of the upper low, and well N of the
warm front. This rain is expected to spread from the Piedmont to
the Eastern Shore through midday, with a lesser chc of rain
across the SE portion of the area.
The warm front will be slow to lift NE through the area today.
Most of the area should remain in a stable low-level airmass
through 18z/2PM, with this limiting convective potential. By
later afternoon into early evening, the convective threat will
increase across srn VA/NE NC in vicinity of the warm front due
to the combination of surface based instability combined with
height falls ahead of the approaching upper low and some
favorable upper jet support. The main threats are wind and
tornado, with the large hail threat confined to any stronger
supercells. It will be difficult for any severe convection to
make it across the Bay to the Eastern Shore given water
temperatures in the mid/upper 40s. The latest SPC outlook has an
enhanced risk into NE NC and far southern VA, with slight into
central VA, and marginal for the remainder of the area. Of note,
the significant tornado area still does clip interior NE NC.
Forecast highs Thursday range from the upper 50s/low 60s N, to
the low to perhaps mid 70s SE.
The overall pattern undergoes a significant change tonight as
the southern stream upper low begins to phase with a potent
northern stream trough. This will drive a strong cold front
through the region overnight into early Friday morning. A NNE
wind will increase sharply behind the front, with gusts up to
45-55 mph along the coast, 35-40 mph along the western shore of
the Bay, and 25-35 mph farther inland. A wind advisory has been
issued, which begins late tonight for the Atlantic coast of the
Eastern Shore, and early Friday morning for coastal SE VA/NE
NC. Rain will re-develop from N- S after midnight, with low
temperatures ranging from the mid/upper 30s N, to the mid/upper
40s S by early Friday morning.

.SHORT TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH FRIDAY NIGHT/...
As of 410 AM EDT Thursday...
The upper low will push across the area Friday morning as it
then phases with the northern stream trough offshore by Friday
afternoon. Precipitation is expected to continue through midday
to early afternoon Friday. Surface temperatures are expected to
drop into the mid 30s for portions of the area Friday morning,
with sub- 1290m 1000-850mb thicknesses suggesting that rain will
mix with snow, and likely become all snow for some areas when
the rates are greatest. Any accumulation will be purely rate
driven, with a coating to locally up to 1" of snow possible on
the grass. The best chc of a light accumulation will be from
central VA across the Northern Neck to the MD Eastern Shore and
Accomack Co. VA. Any snow accumulation should melt quickly once
precipitation ends. Total QPF for the entire event ranges from
around 1.0" across the N, to 0.3- 0.5" S. Forecast highs Friday
range from around 40F to the low 40s N, to the upper 40s/low 50s
S, but temperatures are expected to fall across southern
portions of the area during the day. Remaining breezy inland to
windy along the coast Friday, with the Wind Advisory continuing
into the afternoon for the Eastern Shore, and through Friday
evening for SE VA/NE NC.

Models show low pres dvlpng off the sern coast Sun along with a sfc
trof extending north along the coast. This systm is progged to track
nne along or just east of the Gulf Stream wall Mon/Mon nite before
continuing ne and out into the VaCapes Tue/Wed. Models differ in
just how far north and west pcpn gets. GFS/Canadian keeps most of
the pcpn along the immediate coast of just offshore while the ECMWF
has a track closer to the coast and rain much farther inland. For
now, will keep low chc PoPs along the coast Sun nite/Mon with any
leftover rain pushing offshore Mon eve. Dry west of the Ches Bay.

A rather complicated scenario developing across the local area
over the next 24 hrs. Most of the local area (except ORF/ECG)
remain wedged in this aftrn with LIFR CIGS along with reduced
VSBYS in foth areas of rain/drizzle and fog. Some drying in the
low levels at ORF/ECG as a warm front apprchs those area over
the next few hrs. CIGS vary south of the bndry but should remain
in the MVFR/VFR range. Low pressure apprchs frokm the west later
this aftrn/eve. Expect sct convection to dvlp along and south of
the warm front after 21Z, so have added VCTS for now at ECG/ORF/PHF.
Both RIC and SBY remain in the IFR St with rain/drizzle/fog.
As the low moves across the area this eve. it will drap a cold front
across the area. Thus, rain/shwrs remain in the fcst along with a
wind shift to the NNE behind it. The upr level low crosses the area
Fri morning. Strong CAA behind it results in gusty winds btwn 15-30
kts. In addition, models show the potential for some wet snow to
mix in with the pcpn Fri morning at both RIC/SBY before the pcpn
ends. The pcpn may even go over to all snow for an hour or two if
the pcpn comes down hard enuf.
OUTLOOK...
High pressure builds into the area from the north this weekend.
Low pressure is progged to linger off the southeast and Mid
Atlantic coast early next week.

Issued a new Marine DFA (through 1 PM) for the nrn bay/coastal
waters and extended the Marine DFA until 10 AM for the remainder
of the area (except the Rappahannock River).
Previous Discussion:
Low pressure currently over the Middle Mississippi Valley this
morning will continue to move ENE into the Ohio Valley through the
afternoon before dropping ESE over the local waters and off the
Virginia coastline Thursday night.
A Marine Dense Fog Advisory is in effect through 8 AM for the middle
and lower Bay, York River, James River, and middle and southern
coastal waters due to visibilities less than 1 SM. Early this
morning, winds are generally E around 5 kt but will become SE and
increase to 10-15 kt by late morning, and eventually becoming 15-20
kt this afternoon behind a warm front lifting north. Waves will
generally be 2-3 ft today in the Bay. SCAs are in effect this
afternoon through this evening for the Bay and Currituck Sound due
to SE winds 15-20 kt, becoming S this evening. SCAs are in effect
this afternoon through this evening for the coastal waters due to 4-
6 ft seas.
The cold front associated with the approaching low drops south over
the local waters tonight into Friday morning. Have replaced the Gale
Watches with Gale Warnings and added the Rappahannock, York, and
James rivers to the warning. Strong CAA behind the front will allow
winds to quickly become NNE/N and increase to 25-30 kt over the Ches
Bay and rivers with gusts to 35-40 kt. Winds will be even strong
over the coastal waters and Currituck Sound with sustained winds 30-
35 kt and gusts 40-45 kt. An hour or two of Storm-force gusts 45-50
kt will be possible over the northern coastal waters Friday morning.
Will need to keep an eye on the high end gust potential as a Storm
Warning may be needed in future updates. Waves and seas will also
increase Friday with 4-6 ft waves in the Bay, 5-7 ft waves at the
mouth of the Bay, and 9-14 ft seas. Highs seas by Friday afternoon
for the northern coastal waters and by Friday evening/night for the
southern coastal waters. A High Surf Advisory will likely be needed
for the northern coastal beaches Friday afternoon through Saturday
afternoon and for the southern coastal beaches late Friday afternoon
through Saturday night.
NNE winds begin to subside Friday night with Gale conditions likely
ending overnight. As the original low moves E out to sea Friday
night, high pressure will drop SE into the Ohio Valley. This will
create a strong pressure gradient and will keep winds elevated with
SCAs likely through Saturday for the Bay after the Gales end.
Meanwhile, a new low pressure develops off the Florida coast this
weekend. This low will gradually move NE this weekend through early
next week and will maintain the pressure gradient winds, especially
for the southern coastal waters, through early next week. This will
also maintain onshore flow with SCAs for the coastal waters due to
seas above 5 ft likely through Wednesday.

.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
As of 410 AM EDT Thursday...
Strong N-NNE winds are expected behind a cold front moving
through the region on Friday morning. Water levels will rise
across the mid/lower Ches Bay and Atlantic coast of SE VA/NE NC
on Friday, with tidal anomalies of 1 to 3 feet above normal
possible (locally higher in spots) from late Friday through
Friday night. The highest water levels are expected to occur
Friday night, as this is the higher of the two astronomical
tides. While astronomical tides are expected to remain
relatively low, minor to localized moderate coastal flooding
will be possible in the bay and along the Atlantic coast. Have
issued a Coastal Flood Watch for Eastern Currituck County due
relatively higher confidence in moderate tidal flooding. In
addition, large breaking waves will likely result in beach
erosion from Fri through the weekend. Damage to dune structures
is expected across the nrn Outer Banks.
Water levels are expected to slowly fall this weekend as winds
relax a bit (but likely remain considerably higher than normal
given the persistent N-NE flow and elevated seas).
