Widespread low stratus and areas of drizzle/fog will continue
through tonight as moist onshore flow continues across the
region. After midnight, light rain begins to overspread the
region from the west as low pressure begins to approach the
region. Visibilities may improve somewhat later tonight as the
rain moves into the area. Temperatures are expected to remain
fairly steady and potentially rise a degree or two in spots
through the night. Lows will generally range from 45 to 50
across the region.

As of 310 PM EDT Wednesday...
Low pressure over Ky Thurs morning with the warm front snaking its
way across the Carolinas. Models support widespread rain across the
north Thurs morning. By the aftrn, low pressure crosses the mts with
the warm front progged to lift north into srn Va after 18Z. This
combined with a rain cooled stable layer due to the entrenched wedge
across the area will be the key to where convection dvlps, let
alone become severe. Appears this line will set up ivof VA ST RT 460
to near Williamsburg. South/east of this line is where the best
support for svr tstms (including tornado/hail) will be with a 1-2
county buffer zone farther north to where chc thunder will be
(threat here will be hail/wind). Any convection that does dvlp
farther north will likely be elevated (included the RIC metro area
on north). In addition, think the svr threat is not as great along
the ern shore as supercells generally don't hold together as they
cross water that is in the mid 40s. Time frame wise is btwn 4-10 PM.
Thus, have continued this trend in the grids with this forecast
package. Temps tricky and will depend on the frontal position. Highs
arnd 60 far north to low-mid 70s along/south of the VA/NC border.
Rain continues Thurs nite ahead of the cold front. Models even
suggest some lagging instab along this bndry as it crosses the area
Thurs eve, thus kept slght chc thunder across the sw. CAA kicks in
late as the upr lvl systm apprchs. Lows from the upr 30s far north
to lwr 50s far south.
Upr level systm tracks sse across the area Fri. Widespread pcpn
continues thru 18Z then tapers off from n-s during the aftrn.
Meanwhile, on-going CAA will make for an unseasonably cold/raw day
as temps hold steady or slowly fall into the upr 30s-lwr 40s thru
the aftrn. Although not in the grids because of sfc tmps btwn 37-42,
can't rule out a few wet snow flakes as the pcpn comes to an end.
Any lingering rain exits off the nrn Outer Banks Fri eve, with clrg

nrn Outer Banks and psbly into Tidewater. Thus will carry low chc
PoPs across those areas Mon/Mon nite. Another low moves ne across
the nations mid section and into the Gt lakes Wed. Appears moisture
from this systm stays west of the mts thru mid week.

As of 200 AM EDT Thursday...
LIFR/IFR stratus prevails as of 06z with weak surface high
pressure remaining over the area. Vsby is 2sm or less for much
of the region, with some locations (including RIC/ORF) having
fog with vsby 1/2sm or less. Rain is expected to arrive at RIC,
mainly after 08z, and this could result in some improvement of
vsby. Cigs likely remain IFR through 18z, with some improvement
thereafter for most sites as a warm front attempts to push
through the area. However, SBY has the potential to remain
LIFR/IFR through much of the 06z TAF period. Rain is expected
mainly from RIC-SBY this morning, with pcpn becoming more
showery this afternoon from srn VA to NE NC in the wake of the
warm front. This area could also experience a few late
aftn/early evening tstms, which have the potential to become
severe with damaging wind gusts, hail, and few tornadoes. A
cold front approaches from the N late tonight. The front is
expected to cross the area from N-S from 06-12z Friday.
Additional rain arrives behind the front. Some stronger wind
gusts are expected immediately behind the front, potentially up
to 30-40kt.
Upper level low pressure crosses the area Friday morning and
pushes off the coast during the afternoon. There is the
potential that rain ends as snow Friday (mainly for RIC and
SBY). Remaining breezy Friday, especially along the coast, with
a NNE wind of 15-25kt with gusts to around 30kt. High pressure
builds into the area from the north during the weekend and into
early next week as low pressure lingers off the Southeast coast.

Have decided to raise a Gale Watch for the Lower James River
from Fri morning through Fri evening due to wind probs showing
>50% of wind gusts aoa 35 kt...esp at the opening onto the Lower
Ches Bay.
Prev discussion:
Northerly winds 10-15 kts this afternoon with
low pressure to our east well off the coast and weak high
pressure to our north. Waves in the bay 1-2 ft (2-3 ft at the
mouth of the bay), and seas 2-4 ft. Winds become NE and then SE
5-10 kts overnight into Thursday morning. Dense marine fog is
possible overnight into Thursday morning, with visibility under
1 NM possible.
Southerly winds increase on Thursday as a warm front associated with
a low approaching from the west lifts north across the area. 15-20
kt winds with gusts around 25 kts expected over the bay, Currituck
sound, and coastal waters by mid afternoon. SCA's go into effect at
20Z Thursday. By Thursday evening waves in the bay increase to 2-3
ft and seas build to 4-6 ft.
Cold front crosses the area late Thursday night into Friday morning.
Tightening pressure gradient and CAA will result in strong northerly
winds Friday morning through at least late Friday evening. Wind
probs continue to show a period of Gales across the coastal waters,
bay, and Currituck sound, and strong small craft conditions over the
rivers. Expect 25-30 kts over the bay and Currituck Sound with gusts
up to 40 kts, and 30-35 kts over the coastal waters with gusts
around 45 kts. Winds over the rivers will be 20-25 kts with gusts
around 30 kts. Gale Watches go into effect for the middle and
northern coastal waters starting at 08Z Friday, and 14Z for the
southern coastal waters, Currituck Sound, and the bay. SCA's will be
needed for the rivers, but likely will be able to hold off on
issuing those until overnight or tomorrow. By late Friday evening
Waves in the bay will build to 4-6 ft, and 5-7 ft at the mouth of
the bay. Seas will build to 10-13 ft.
Strong high pressure builds into the northeast this weekend. Gale
conditions will end Saturday morning but Small craft conditions are
likely to linger throughout the weekend.
