Haines Customs measured 5 inches as of 7 AM and some moderate 
snow showers were observed after that time. Temperatures have 
warmed above freezing along the Haines Highway to at least 36 
mile. Some mixed snow showers are likely through the afternoon, 
but with only up to 1 inch of additional accumulation.

The snow has started to taper off and should be ending by morning.
Much of the energy of the storm has moved east into Canada and 
the surface low is dissipating over the northern panhandle. 

Difficult driving conditions along the upper elevation of the
Klondike Highway may continue through tonight.

Southeast Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SHORT TERM.../Through Sunday night/...Updates tonight centered
mostly around delaying the heaviest QPF associated with the front
currently impacting Southeast Alaska. However, when the QPF
finally does arrive, those totals have been increased since
yesterday. Model agreement in this regard, as well as location and
track of the low and associated front is very good. Changes to
temperatures included modest reductions to daytime highs as well
as equally modest increases to overnight lows through Sunday
night. Sum total of these changes resulted in less snow for the
Juneau area today, but significant increases to short term snow
totals on the highways near the international border. Winter
storm warnings for both will likely be required later this morning
after coordination with the Canadian weather office in Vancouver.
Elsewhere, advisory amounts or less are expected over the next 48
hours.

The decision was made to not cancel the winter storm warning
currently in effect for Juneau for two primary reasons. Firstly,
the previous system for which a warning was issued (and did
verify), produced widely varying snow totals across the Juneau
Borough with amounts ranging from less than 2 inches to as much as
8 inches. Secondly, with no spotter information available
overnight, ground truth is limited to the local measurements at
the weather office and the Juneau Airport. Finally, these two
locations featured some of the lowest totals in the previous
event. In summary, the totals observed both here at the office and
at the airport overnight were not considered to be reliable
indicators of what has been going on elsewhere within the Borough.

When the low associated with the present weather front finally
arrives near the northeast Gulf coast, a strong southerly pressure
gradient will set up and produce high end small craft winds over
several of the inner channels. Strong winds are also expected in
Skagway and along the Klondike Highway. Additionally,
westerly/southwesterly gales are forecast for the east central
Gulf and high wind small craft winds closer to the outer coast.

Updates tonight included a GFS/NAM blend for the Gulf and high
resolution NAM for the inner channels and this delayed the
arrival of the strongest winds on the inside. PoP and QPF were
also adjusted using primarily the GFS with some help from the NAM.
Temperatures adjusted using the SREF for daytime highs and MOS for
overnight lows. Overall confidence is average.

.LONG TERM.../Monday through Saturday night/...The active weather
pattern continues unabated as more systems move into Southeast
Alaska through late next week.

The period begins with the area experiencing lingering showers
from the most recent system to impact the panhandle. These showers
will soon be superceded by the next system racing towards the
panhandle on Monday. Uncertainties remain in the exact impacts
this system will generate. On one hand. The possibility of much of
the central and northern panhandle receiving accumulating snow
does exist. The 1290 thickness line, though rather marginal, does
enshroud much of the panhandle. In addition, 850 mb temps look to
remain on the cooler side, and snow melt cooling could definitely
work towards keeping precipitation snow in parts of the area
through Monday night. There are also indications that some
instability will be present, favoring heavy snow at least at the
start of the event, and snow levels will be fairly low. On the
other hand, the center of the low is currently favored to track
north of the bulk of the panhandle. This, along with broad SW
synoptic flow and its accompanying southerly warm air push, would
strongly lean more towards a rain- focused setup for much of the
area. While uncertainty remains high, chose to lean towards a
winter- setup for the time being, though toned down possible snow
totals substantial. Do expect that precipitation will at least
start as snow for parts of the panhandle. This being said, as
additional data becomes available, significant changes to the
forecast may prove necessary with regards to precipitation type.

As this system weakens, a broad low entering the Gulf from the
West will rotate impulses into the area, ensuring that chances of
precipitation remain in the forecast through much of the week. It
does look like there is the possibility of some drying for parts
of the panhandle late in the week. However, both operational and
ensemble guidance at this point remain in poor agreement this far
out, so confidence remains low. Overall forecast confidence in
precipitation chances remain good, but confidence in precipitation
type is low.
