The persistent high pressure over northwestern Canada will continue to weaken, relaxing the strong northeasterly gradient that has been in place over southeastern Alaska that has been producing strong outflow winds there. .SHORT TERM...Temperatures throughout the evening have in many
areas remained substantially warmer than they were the previous
night. The source of these less frigid temperatures can be tracked
back to the breezy conditions throughout much of SE Alaska, which
have helped keep the atmosphere more mixed. A weak shortwave
moving into the area from the east will see these winds strengthen
in many parts of the area through Thursday morning. Downtown
Juneau in particular could see a mountain wave setup with wind
gusts as high as 50 to 55 mph through parts of Thursday. Further
north, a high wind warning remains in effect for Skagway and the
South Klondike Highway until noon AKST on Thursday. Though
temperatures may be slowly moderating, the wind will continue to
result in low wind chills, and a wind chill advisory remains in
effect for White Pass through Friday morning.
As temperatures slowly moderate, the high pressure over Canada
will concurrently weaken, reducing the outflow over the area. This
will set the stage for the possible return of active weather
towards the end of the short term forecast period. Am not
completely confident in model handling of a system progged to move
out of the South late Saturday into Sunday-think that the
lingering dry air may weaken its impacts. However, do think that
it will help usher in a change back to a more active pattern for
next week.

forecast confidence is below average for the period. I primarily
went with a 50/50 combination of the GFS and ECMWF that were
available at the time of forecasting. It looked like that
combination gave a good average output of the model guidance that
we had to work with.
Through the period, the strong area of high pressure that has been
producing the tight pressure gradient will weaken drastically.
Therefore, the outflow winds that we have been experiencing in the
northeastern half of the Panhandle recently will gradually
subside within the first half of the long-term bringing an end to
the dangerously cold windchill. Temperatures will gradually warm
throughout the latter half of the long-term forecast period as
flow shifts from the northeast to southerly bringing warm air
advection into southeast Alaska as the models show a series of
lows that look to approach the area after the aforementioned
strong high weakens. This looks to bring precipitation amounts on
the lighter side toward the latter 2/3 of the long-term forecast
period.
