Southeast Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SHORT TERM.../Through Tuesday Night/...We continue to be in an
offshore northerly outflow pattern with an established strong area
of high pressure over the Yukon region of Canada and generally
lower pressure across Southeast Alaska and the Gulf. We will
remain in that pattern for the duration of the short term forecast
period. This yields generally dry conditions with mostly clear
skies throughout the Panhandle. Some strong gusty channel/pass
winds oriented perpendicular to and located under the strong
pressure gradient along the Coast Mountains.

Temperatures will be at their coldest tonight across the
Panhandle with lows ranging from below zero near White Pass and
Haines Customs in the extreme northern Panhandle to around 20 in
the southern Panhandle. This is supported universally by MOS
guidance and model forecast 850mb temperatures of negative 15 to
negative 25 Celsius that are advecting into the Panhandle from
the north, which translates into very cold surface temperatures.
The decreased cloudiness will add a radiational component to our
cooling along with the cold air advecting in from the the north.

Due to the strong winds of up to 25 mph with gusts up to around 45
mph and cold temperatures dipping down to between negative 5 and
negative 10, wind chill readings could dip as low as 35 below near
White Pass into Tuesday morning. These dangerously cold wind
chills could cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 10
minutes. Therefore, a Wind Chill Advisory is in effect until 9AM
AKST Tuesday for the Klondike Highway. Strong winds of around 25
mph with gusts up to around 40 mph are also possible in the
Skagway area tonight, but temperatures will not be quite as cold
there due to downslope warming.

Mainly dry conditions will persist through the Tuesday. Another
system enters the eastern Gulf and begins to approach the
Panhandle Tuesday morning, but immediately dips southward and
exits the southeastern Gulf. Instead, it looks to bring mainly
clouds and some fairly low chances of light isolated snow showers
tonight and Tuesday night for Yakutat and late Tuesday night for
the southern Panhandle. Any accumulation should be quite light in
those areas.

For the marines, freezing spray, heavy at times, and high waves
are possible in Lynn Canal and northern Chatham Strait due to the
long fetch of strong northerly outflow Gale force winds allowing
the waves to build up to around 12 ft tonight and into Tuesday
morning. Gusts up to around 45 kt are also possible out of
interior passes.

Forecast confidence through Tuesday night is generally average to
above average due to good weather forecast model agreement.

.LONG TERM...The extended forecast is looking to stay below
normal for temperatures an less active than winter has been so
far. Generally lowered temps and pop/qpf for this forecast package
and kept some of the northerly outflow winds going.

An upper level ridge rebuilds over the western gulf Wednesday and
extends northward into the arctic, with the subsequent NWLY jet
stream across SE Alaska. This flow pattern will keep us mainly dry
and cold on Wednesday, but models are picking up on some precip
(snow showers) tracking across the area (NW to SE along the outer
coast) assoc with some upper level vorticity and a weak lingering
lee side low over the northern gulf. Think that the dry outflow
will put a damper on the snow potential and will see some clouds
with it but only light snow.

Wednesday night, surface high pressure builds in the Yukon,
causing increased north winds through the northern inner channels.
The upper level ridge will shift eastward across the panhandle
through the day Thursday with flow backing to the SW followed by
a quick moving trough pushing through for Friday. At the surface,
a low moves across the northern gulf Thursday night, only to be
taken over by another low tracking across the north Pacific, well
south of the area. This north Pacific low is further south than
yesterday and the northern gulf low is quite a bit weaker too in
the latest models. The trend of systems becoming weaker with new
model runs is fairly common when we've had dry/cold/outflow in
place. It takes longer to overcome the dry airmass and models tend
to do that too quickly, then find themselves backtracking the
next day. Still, snow ratios look to be on the high side to start
(dry/fluffy snow) so could see a quick couple inches late Thursday
night through Friday afternoon.

The break between systems looks brief Friday night through Saturday
morning as another upper level trough and weak surface low will be
moving in from the west by afternoon. Again this looks to be a quick
moving system with minor accumulations Saturday night.
