Low pressure over the far southeastern Gulf of Alaska will
continue tracking southeast towards the Pacific Northwest coast
by Wednesday afternoon. An inverted trough over Southeast Alaska
will weaken as an equally weak surface ridge builds over the 
eastern Gulf on Thursday.

Southeast Alaska Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Juneau
AK 545 AM AKST Mon Dec 13 2021

.SHORT TERM.../ through Monday night / An area of lower pressure
over the southeast gulf with multiple smaller lows in it moves south
out of the region through this afternoon. High pressure over
Northwest Canada will see the central bubble beginning to move SE
towards Northern Alberta, and the tighter pressure gradient over the
northern inner channels will slowly start to weaken, however gale
force winds will continue through Monday night. The winds with the
colder temperatures has a wind chill advisory for the higher
elevations of the Klondike Highway in effect until Tuesday morning.

The cold outflow from Canada has single-digit lows this morning for
parts of the northern panhandle and tonight's temperatures will
likely be a couple of degrees cooler in the northern and clearer
skies for the southern panhandle should allow temperatures to lower
to the teens to near 20 degrees.

A trough extending northward from the gulf towards Prince William
Sound is gathering low-level clouds to it and as a low moves out of
the southern Bering Sea and then track SE across the gulf of Alaska.
Expect this to nudge the trough eastwards and spreading snow into
the Northeast gulf coast area West of Yakutat late Monday night. The
rest of the panhandle should remain dry.

.LONG TERM...The surface pattern at the start of the long term
period on Tuesday has a weakening high pressure over Canada. This
will allow the winds over the inner channels to begin to relax along
with localized higher gusts. Some small craft winds will remain over
Lynn Canal with some pockets of freezing spray through Tuesday.
Temps will remain below normal with 850mb temps ranging from -6 in
the south to -20 near White Pass. Wind chills may still be an issue
going into Tuesday night with winds persisting and cold temps in the
far northern areas.

A upper level trof will dive SE out of the interior of AK and over
the northern gulf and northern inn channels late Tuesday into
Wednesday. The upper level support from this trof will bring a
chance of some snow showers for the Yakutat area Tuesday afternoon
and by Wednesday for the northern half of the inner channels. At
this time amounts look to be on the lighter side but it will have
snow ratios of 15 to 20:1 and that may allow the snow to accumulate
up to 3 inches in places. The southern half of the area will remain
in the NW flow aloft so they may just see few flurries but have some
sunshine also. Marine winds will remain on the breezing side near
interior passes and up norther Lynn Canal but otherwise north to
northeast winds 10 to 15 kt.

The upper trof will be very transient as a ridge over high
pressure aloft moves over the gulf ahead of the next significant
weather system to impact SEAK on Thursday night and persisting
into Friday. Still some shifting on how this system is going to
play out exactly, but most of the ensembles are hinting at quick
shot of snow for the entire forecast area with good isotropic
lifting with the cold air in place. Snow amounts could range from
4 to 10 inches depending on the snow ratios and QPF. Later shifts
will continue to monitor this event.

Long range guidance is also putting in the suggestion of another
weaker system for next weekend moving in from the NW. This system
may bring another shot of snow for many areas. Timing is still in
question, but the overall trend is still for an active forecast
into next weekend.

Overall there is about average forecaster confidence in the mid to
long range portion of the forecast.
