.SHORT TERM.../Through Thu night/ A small compact low moved N
through the eastern gulf this afternoon spreading precip and wind
as it went. As of 1 pm, it is just W of Cross Sound and will be
moving into the Yukon by this evening. A small area of gale to
near storm force winds were observed on the S side of the low out
in the gulf that brought gusts to 45 mph to Port Alexander,
Sitka, and Cape Decision this afternoon from the SW. There was
also a warm push from the south which has turned most of the
precip over to rain this afternoon. Only Haines, and Yakutat have
been cold enough for snow.

There is substantial cold air advection in the wake of this
system that will be starting a cool down of temperatures panhandle
wide tonight. The large area of cold air will also bring snow
showers to most if not all of the panhandle. Winter weather
Advisories are still posted for various areas of the panhandle
tonight into Thu, particularly for where the terrain will provide
the most lift from the SW to W flow into the panhandle. By Thu
night, most of the showers will start to shift out of the northern
panhandle, but the southern panhandle will still be going strong
so the winter weather advisories for the Petersburg, Wrangell, and
Hyder areas have been extended into Thu night.

Winds will be the other concern, mainly for tonight. For most
areas the winds will primarily be out of the S to W direction at
25 kt or less through the next 36 hours as onshore flow remains
the predominate pattern. The northern panhandle will be
interesting this evening as the small low moves north. Lynn Canal
is mostly calm right now, but southerly pressure gradients will
abruptly increase this evening and will bring strong gusts
(possibly as high as 55 mph) to Skagway, Haines, and Lynn Canal
this evening before diminishing later tonight. Rocky Island near
Point Couverden is already starting to see some gusty winds (up
to 36 kt) as of 2 pm. That should start to spread up Lynn Canal
through the early evening.

.LONG TERM.../Friday through Sunday Night/...The mid-range
forecast includes the weekend which overall, is still looking snow
showery. And these showers will be in two waves; the exiting wave
on Friday and a slow moving wave Saturday into Sunday.

850mb temps are still very cold so snow showers are expected
during this time frame. The bulk of the snow showers look to be in
the southern half of the panhandle Friday, so would expect most
of the snow accumulations to be in the south Friday into Friday
night. 24 hour snow totals totals would be around 1 to 5 inches.
The one exception is Hyder where greater amounts of snow could
fall.

After Friday’s wave moves out to the south, another wave would
move in from the northwest, reaching Yakutat late Friday night.
Snow showers would track southeastward through the panhandle
through Saturday and Saturday night. 24 hour snow accumulations
from this wave would amount to, you guessed it, another 1 to 5
inches. Depending on how early the showers reach Yakutat, they
could get a little more than 5 inches over a 24 hour period.

Sunday continues the snow chances as a potential low passes the
panhandle to the south. Some rain mixing in is possible for the
south as temperatures could warm to the mid to upper 30s.
