.SHORT TERM...Broad upper level trough remains over the gulf
through the weekend with SWLY flow aloft, but with the main jet
stream remaining south of our area aimed at the B.C. coast. The
jet does help to spin up a surface low however, and that is
expected to track NE over the panhandle today and will be the
main focus of the short term period.
Other than the jet, this low has very little support, with no
reflection at 500mb and only a weak trough at 700mb. At the lower
levels, 850-925mb, we start seeing a core of stronger winds with
the low. However, models have pretty big differences in the
surface low track for so early in the forecast. All now have the
low tracking NE, then shifting into Canada. The GFS has the low
tracking across Kupreanof and is the slowest, but also has the
tightest pressure packing. The NAM solution is the furthest south,
tracking over N. POW/Sumner Strait. The Canadian is the furthest
north, tracking over Sitka then south of Taku Inlet. The ECMWF has
a broader pressure packing and weaker center with a middle of the
road track, but is also the fastest to move through. All this to
say, winds will be shifting around the compass today, especially
over the central inner channels, but the timing of those changes
has lower forecast confidence. Generally, expect E-SE winds
increasing over the south this morning, then veering south to
southwest as the low center tracks NE. As a result, SELY winds
through Clarence Strait and over POW and the islands along the
outer coast will increase through the morning with gusts up to 45
mph expected.
The low will bring with it a warm front with snow levels rising
above 3kft by mid-day over Prince of Wales and Ketchikan, meaning
primarily rain, but with a little mix for some spots early in the
morning. The rain/snow line will be a big factor with the low
track. The southern most tracks keep Petersburg to Hyder in snow
for most of the day, then warm through the evening. The more
northern tracks have the rain/snow line reaching as far north as
downtown Juneau tonight. A big caveat is that one of the southern
tracks (NAM) keeps all POP south of Taku inlet, but other models
have POP reaching north of Juneau. We have kept "likely" wording
in for Juneau due to models disparity, but have the greatest snow
potential for Petersburg and Hyder where models do agree. Hyder
remains under an advisory, but have lowered accumulations some due
to expected warming tonight. Petersburg could see up to 3 inches
today. By late tonight models come back in line and all have us in
a post-frontal W-SW flow and CAA. This will cause a transition
back to snow showers.
.LONG TERM.../Sunday through Wednesday as of 4 PM Friday/ To start
the period, a weakening low will have moved across the southern
panhandle. A low then moves into the NE gulf bringing onshore
showers across the panhandle. Temperatures cool Saturday night
across the north and central panhandle priming the environment for
snow showers through Sunday. Across the south, rain showers can
be expected. Given the nature of snow showers, accumulations and
rates will be highly variable over small distances. Consistent
accumulations look favorable Sunday, but not expecting any rates
to prompt any winter advisories/warnings at this time.
Low confidence in the long term forecast has limited any major
changes. One area of focus was on a storm that moves into the Gulf
Monday through Tuesday. Confidence is increasing that this system
could bring storm force winds through the Gulf as well as heavy
snow across the north and heavy rain across the south. The
question is how well will the cold air remain over the central and
northern panhandle before the southerly flow warms temperatures
above freezing. Will continue to monitor this system as additional
model runs come into view. Depending on the track of the low,
winter products may be needed for accumulating snow. As for the
overall pattern through the long term, wetter and cooler
conditions look favorable leading to active weather. As upper
level troughing persists over the Gulf, multiple rounds of storms
followed by onshore flow move through SEAK.
