.UPDATE...With the probability of strongest winds approaching
closer, we studied ensemble graphs and meteograms this morning
regarding the threat of another high wind event for the southern
Panhandle. The threat for southern Baranof Island including Port
Alexander and Little Port Walter is not out of the question. But
the highest probability from collective ensemble member threat
with both the GFS and ECMWF lay squarely across the southern
Inner Channels with slightly lower confidence for western Prince
of Wales Island. However, as Hydaburg verified high wind equally
with Ketchikan two nights ago, we will collectively attach them
together for a second high wind event in as many days. We still
expect heavy rain with this system as well. In short, we expect
gusts to 60 mph now for mainly southern Prince of Wales Island,
Revilla and Annette Islands, especially in early afternoon.
Warning is now posted from 9 AM to 6 PM Wednesday. This will
likely impact holiday travel.

SHORT TERM.../Tuesday and Tuesday night/...The showery pattern
continues through the day as the main system approaches late
tonight. A band or two of quick-moving, moderate precipitation is
expected this morning, with a potential short-lived dry break after
each band passes. As the main gale-force system approaches late
Tuesday, expect widespread precipitation and breezy conditions.
The first band of precipitation has just reached the panhandle
resulting in snowfall for Yakutat, Skagway, and Haines, a mix of
precipitation for Juneau and Sitka, and rain for the south.
Precipitation type today is expected to transition from snow to a
mix in the north and stay as rain through the day for the south.
Snow accumulations are forecasted to be less than an inch, but
could be as much as 3 inches if showers linger.
The southern panhandle overnight low temperatures dropped a few
degrees below forecasted due to a quick break in the clouds, but
quickly moderated as the band of precipitation pushed through.
Temperatures are expected to warm slightly today and will not drop
as low tonight due to widespread cloud coverage, an increase in
winds, and warm air advection.
Tuesday evening's system brings gale-force winds and widespread
heavy precipitation. Warm air advection with this system will
result in precipitation type changing Wednesday morning from a
snow/mix to rain. A Winter Storm Warning for Haines and Skagway
and a Winter Weather Advisory for Gustavus and Juneau begins
midnight tonight (12am Wednesday). A strong wind headline is
posted for Sitka, Prince of Wales, Ketchikan, and surrounding
areas late Tuesday evening with gusts to 50 mph. Damaging winds
are expected for Ketchikan, Prince of Wales, and surrounding

Focused changes were made to the forecast this morning. QPF and
snow amounts were increased about an inch for the Warning areas.
Winds were increased ~5 kts for Juneau, Sitka, Ketchikan, and
Prince of Wales. Inside water marine winds were increased ~5-10
kts near Scull Island, Little Island, and Rocky Island. Some
uncertainty as to when winds will shift south for Northern Lynn
and if Skagway winds remain calm, then snowfall amounts could be
increased.
LONG TERM.../Wednesday through Saturday/ Active weather pattern
for the holidays for all of SE Alaska. Heavy precipitation, strong
winds, and warming temperatures which will determine
precipitation type and snow totals all happening from a series of
fronts and lows moving into the region. Unfortunately due to
large model disagreements and spread among ensembles there is
potential for a variations in resulting practical weather. This
will be a rapidly evolving situation so significant changes to
issued forecast are possible. Use caution for any of your holiday
activities.
At mid levels an upper level low drops down from the AK interior
and ridging moves eastward over the panhandle. This low/trough
over the AK Gulf with ridging over western Canada will remain in
place through into the start of the weekend. At the surface, a
low pressure system moves up from the N Pacific into the SE AK
Gulf with the associated gale force front moving in. Behind the
front another low develops late Wednesday into Thursday with
enhanced precipitation and winds for the southern panhandle.
What has changed from last forecast: The position of the low now
looks to move further north and faster. What this will do is bring
in warmer air faster thus changing initial snowfall into rain
sooner, resulting in lower snow totals for the central panhandle.
The 850 temperatures reflect this with ensemble having positive
changes. Getting high QPF values from the long fetch of tropical
moisture and atmospheric river set up (mainly for the southern
panhandle) Rainfall amounts over 48 hours of 3 to 4 inches. Snow
totals for the central areas of 3 to 5 inches before switching to
rain, if the timing is correct. 925 mb winds with selected models
are into the 50 to 55 kt range for the southern panhandle and 30
to 40 kt range to the north. They still look to mix down which
also supports transition from snow to rain. For now keeping
surface winds gusts at 50 mph or less but watching for higher
gusts. Trying to nail down the temperature and a non standard
diurnal trend. Should see warming start Wednesday and continue to
rise into Thursday.
Model agreement was not helping the forecast. Got good line up
between ECMWF, NAM, and Canadian for location of the low center with
GFS as an outlier. NBM was supporting lower confidence on higher
snow amounts. Ensembles overall trended warmer for 850 temps. All
except the GFS. Everything stated above will be changed if the
GFS (which was considered an outlier) turns out to be correct. a)
QPF will be much higher b) winds for the souther panhandle will be
higher c) snow will last longer and thus accumulate more. That
said keeping close watch on new model runs and current conditions
over the next few days. Once again forecast confidence is low and
expecting the forecast to change as new information comes in.
