Southeast Alaska Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Juneau AK 556 AM AKDT Sat Nov 6 2021 .SHORT TERM...Low pressure centered offshore north of Sitka is causing bands of moderate showers over the southern and central panhandle this morning. The low will slowly track N to NW through Saturday night, shifting the showers northward through the day. Some gusty winds of 25-35mph continue to be observed with each band, but should remain below strong wind criteria today. Between the showers are some fairly large breaks in the clouds. Behind the low, weak (1008mb) high pressure will move in over the southern panhandle Saturday afternoon. This will decrease winds considerably and expect them to become variable as well. This trend will shift northward through Saturday evening with the low ending up along the northern border by Sunday morning. The light winds under the high pressure and wet ground after the morning showers will most certainly lead to areas of fog Saturday night. High pressure to the north and distant low pressure to the south will result in N-NELY winds through all of the inside waters for Sunday. As the low to the south approaches, the pressure gradient with the northern high increases. By Sunday night some of the northerly outflow winds will be up to 20 kt, possibly strong. The outflow/offshore flow will make for mostly clear skies Sunday, but the low approaching from the south will cause increasing clouds over the far south introduce chance POP. If temps fall enough Sunday evening before the clouds move in, then parts of POW and Ketchikan could see some snow mixed in, but still at the chance level. Went above model guidance for temperatures in locations that are expected to have some north downslope winds Sunday night/Monday morning, such as downtown Juneau, Haines and Skagway. .LONG TERM.../Monday through Saturday as of 10 PM Friday/ There are three points worth mentioning in the long term. First, there is increasing confidence that temperatures will drop below climatological normal. Second, we may see our first measurable snowfall in many locations. Third, a strong system brining heavy rates of precipitation is expected at the end of the long term. The climate prediction center has noted the below climatological normal temperatures in the long term, with 850 mb temperatures ranging from -4 to -10 degrees Celsius. Surface temperatures will range from the low 20s to mid 30s overnight. The above confidence in colder temperatures has opened the possibility of measurable snowfall across the majority of the panhandle. Timing and amount of snowfall are below average confidence, but the current forecast displays up to an inch of snowfall Wednesday. Models are in some agreement that the panhandle will remain dry through Tuesday, excluding a slight chance of precipitation at the most southern portion due to a surface low. A strong N/S pressure gradient will be present at this time, resulting in small craft winds for N/S inner channels. A storm tracking across the northeastern Pacific converges towards British Columbia and the panhandle next week. The precipitation from this system may become heavy by the end of the long term, but model uncertainty is relatively high at this stage. A NAM/GFS blend along with the WPC blend of GFS/ECMWF, and CMC along with their ensemble means were used for tonight's long term forecast.
