Southeast Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SHORT TERM.../ Thru Sunday night / A weakening surface low-
pressure center just west of Dixon Entrance Friday afternoon will
track north-northwest along the coast toward Prince William Sound
by Saturday evening. Winds with the low will have gusty winds ( to
40 mph ) for the coastal area from Port Alexander southward
through the evening hours. A pocket of unstable air is traveling
with the low so added isolated thunderstorms mainly over the
coastal waters ( south of Cross Sound ), and across southern
Prince of Wales Island.

A weak bubble of high pressure follows behind the low and this
will end the showers over the southern panhandle starting Saturday
afternoon and the drying trend and clearing skies will move
northward toward over the Panhandle and Northeast Gulf Coast
Saturday night. Wet grounds from recent rains and quick cooling
overnight will allow patchy fog to form over Southeast Alaska. The
skies will also have the lows tumbling closer to or below
freezing for much of the panhandle. The dry weather will continue
through Sunday and into Sunday night before another front
approaches the southern panhandle. Expect that lows Sunday night
be as cold if not slightly cooler by a couple of degrees compared
to Saturday night.

The incoming front is approaching Sunday night, so it will be a
close forecast on whether the temperatures are warm enough with
the cloud cover to keep the sea level precipitation rain, or if
snow is present. For now, have a snow/mix for the far southwest
panhandle Early Monday morning.

.LONG TERM.../Sunday through Friday as of 10 PM Thursday/...The
long range forecast will begin with a potential nice day on
Sunday. Cut off low at the 500mb level will put a general offshore
pattern over the gulf so chances for rain will decrease as a
leftover area of low pressure spins in the gulf. This should also
bring decreasing clouds.

As the cutoff low continues to spin over the gulf though, Monday
would see the clouds build from south to north with precipitation
chances returning to areas south of Sumner Strait. Tuesday is when
the northern areas could see at least a slight (20%) chance of
precipitation. Temperatures aloft are cold enough during this time
that some snow could be mixed in, even for the south.

Cold, below normal, temperatures are also expected in the long
term forecast. 24 hour temperature anomalies in the GFS and
European ensembles, and MOS guidance, are in agreement about this
colder pattern early next week. Because of this, long term
forecast lows are in the 20s for the north, 30s for the south.
Highs are in the 30s for the north, and lower 40s for the south.

For the late term in the long range forecast, general low pressure
in the gulf would bring back the rain chances and put the
panhandle in a slight warming trend, primarily for the south.
