Southeast Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SHORT TERM...A ridge building in over the panhandle is preventing
the eastward progression of a frontal system into the region.
Clouds have been slow to scour out over the region, but there is
evidence to suggest that it is beginning to happen over the
southern panhandle. Expect this trend to continue into the evening
and overnight hours in a south to north fashion. Isolated showers
may still be possible in northern Lynn Canal and some coastal
areas but expect those chances to drop off precipitously early in
the evening. Yakutat remains far enough to the west that it should
continue to see lingering showers from the frontal system well
into the night, but should eventually get in on the clearing late.
Warm air being advected into the area under the ridge will bring
850mb temperatures up to the 5-7 degree C range by Sunday evening.
This could potentially set the stage for some rather warm
temperatures for this time of year if the proper conditions of
breaking some inversions or perhaps even some localized
downsloping. As of now, model guidance is being a bit bearish with
the temperatures, but current forecast highs for Sunday and Monday
are trending toward above normal. The flip side of the
temperatures though is that clear skies will allow for some very
efficient radiative cooling at night. Not only will this cause
widespread below freezing temps, but also could lead the way for
some fog in the coming evenings. Early indications are that as we
get toward the end of the forecast period Monday night, the ridge
will begin to break up allowing for clouds to advect in over the
region ahead of another frontal system moving up from the south,
however chances for precipitation don't really begin to ramp up
until after the short term.

.LONG TERM.../Mon through Sat as of 10 pm Fri/ A warm and dry
start to the extended period is still in the cards before we start
trending wetter into the middle of next week. The upper level
pattern has not changed all that much from yesterday with a strong
upper ridge over the panhandle and Western Canada to start the
long range period out. This ridge will be steadily displaced to
the N and E after Monday, allowing increasing chances for systems
to enter the panhandle, and resulting in a wet second half of the
week.

Through the early part of the week, notably Monday, it continues
to look like a period of dry and warmer weather as southerly flow
pushes a warmer air mass into the area. 850 mb temps are still
forecast to push 4 to 7 degrees C Sun through Mon night across the
panhandle resulting in surface high temps reaching into the 40s
or low 50s and freezing levels rising to 5000 to 6000 feet through
Mon. While these temperatures would be significantly warmer during
the summer months, a combination of low sun angle, fewer hours of
daylight, and an inversion will cap warming in most areas. That
being said, any locations where the inversion fails and where
winds are able to mix down to the surface will likely get
significantly warmer and perhaps topple a few temperature records.
Panhandle winds will generally be 20 kt or less through Monday.

The Gulf waters on the other hand are expected to be rather windy
with high wave heights during this time, particularly in the
central gulf where a largely stalled frontal boundary will remain
in place through early Tuesday.

Tue into the rest of next week has a trend toward wetter and
cooler weather returning. As is often the case, forecasting when
offshore flow breaks down remains a challenge, and the timing of
a return to widespread precipitation has been pushed back to late
Tuesday into Wednesday. The rain will be associated with a series
of lows that will move NW through the eastern gulf from Tue
onward. This system also looks like it could bring windy
conditions to much of the area. Beyond this timeframe however,
drastic disagreement remains on where those lows go and how fast
they track. Consequently, while rain and windy conditions can be
expected, the exact timing of when and where they occur at the
greatest intensity remains a significant challenge. Forecaster
confidence is average through Tuesday before diminishing through
the rest of the week as broad inconsistencies between ensemble and
model runs make it difficult to isolate individual features with
any degree of reliability.
