Southeast Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SHORT TERM...We begin the short term with a trough passing over
the region. Showers have been pretty consistent all day and should
continue under onshore flow into the evening, however, will begin
to see precip chances decrease steadily overnight and into
Saturday as a ridge begins to build over the panhandle. This ridge
will prevent the eastward progression of a frontal system into the
forecast area as a whole, but should continue to see decent
chances for showers in Yakutat until the evening hours Saturday.
The pressure gradient created between the frontal system and the
high pressure over Canada will be the catalyst for gale force
winds in the open Gulf waters and along the northern Gulf coast.
Other coastal areas and Cape Spencer will see small craft
advisory winds. The rest of the inner channels may still see a bit
of wind but should be largely unaffected. Expect skies to clear
out over the course of the day for most locations Saturday which
will provide excellent viewing conditions for what is shaping up
to be an incredible aurora this weekend, but you better wear a
jacket (or coat) because clear skies at night also means that we
will be able to radiate out which should drop temperatures to
colder than what we have seen at night in recent days. This also
could be the impetus for fog. For Halloween, we will be entering a
bit of a "Warm Spell" if you will. Plenty of sun during the day
should help bring temperatures up and 850mb temps increasing to
6-7C will provide some rather warm temperature for the last week
of October. Will need to monitor the conditions on Sunday, as if
any locations are able to break their night time inversion, we
may just have temperatures too low in the forecast.

.LONG TERM.../Sun through Fri as of 10 pm Thur/ Warm dry start to
the extended period is still in the cards before we start
trending wetter into the middle of next week. The upper level
pattern has not changed all that much from yesterday with a strong
upper ridge over the panhandle and Western Canada to start the
long range period out. This ridge gradually shifts east into mid
next week allowing some troughs from the S to sneak into the area.
By later next week the panhandle will be stuck in the southerly
flow between the ridge in Canada and the trough over the Bering
Sea.

The forecast for the early part of the long range has not changed.
We are still looking at a period of dry and warmer weather as
southerly flow pushes a warmer air mass into the area. 850 mb
temps are still forecast to push 4 to 7 degrees C Sun through Mon
night across the panhandle resulting in surface high temps
reaching into the 40s or low 50s and freezing levels rising to
5000 to 6000 feet Sun into Mon. Panhandle winds will generally be
20 kt or less. One change to the forecast was to warm day time
highs Sunday and Monday. There is the potential for Monday
temperatures to reach around 60 degrees as 850mb temps of 8-10 C
will be present. Confidence is low at this time though as there
is uncertainty on if these temperatures will be able to mix to the
surface.

The Gulf water however, are expected to be rather windy with high
wave heights during this time, particularly in the central gulf
where a front that will be blocked from moving further E remains
mostly stationary. Wide spread 30-40 kt winds for the central
gulf and sea heights reaching 20 ft or more are likely.

Tue into the rest of next week has a trend toward wetter and
cooler again (though not very cool). Uncertainty remains on when
the rain will return, but Mon night into Tuesday morning is
looking more favorable. The return of the rain is brought by a
series of lows that will move NW through the eastern gulf from Tue
onward. Drastic disagreement on where those lows go and how fast
they track though. How much rain and wind various areas of the
panhandle get depends on where these lows track and when, so other
then a general trend toward wetter and possibly more wind the mid
to late week forecast remain rather uncertain at this time.
