.SHORT TERM.../ Thru Saturday night / The second of the two
troughs are moving into the panhandle early Friday morning. This
second band will be through Southeast by Friday afternoon, and
lingering showers in the onshore flow will be tapering off
overnight. The eastern edge of a warm frontal feature associated
with a system south of Kodiak Island will graze the northern
panhandle and the Northeast Gulf coast. The rains with the warm
front will end Friday night and early Saturday morning.
Southeast Alaska's weather from Friday night onward for a few
days will be dominated by a ridge of high pressure centered over
western Canada. Anticipating clearing skies under the ridge and
offshore flow that for Saturday evening and night. With the
clearing skies, the temperature for early Sunday morning will be
lowering to the lower 30s. Patchy fog in some locations may
support warmer temperatures as it prevents even more cooling.
The flow pattern in the lower levels Friday into Saturday is
leading to significant warming. The 850 Mb temperatures are -4 to
-6 C Friday morning over the panhandle by midday Sunday they will
have warmed by 9 to 12 C. Provided the temperatures can mix down
to the surface the resulting high temperatures will be in the
lower to mid-50s. Which for many in Southeast would be a Treat
rather than a Trick.
.LONG TERM.../Sun through Fri as of 10 pm Thur/ Warm dry start to
the extended period is still in the cards before we start
trending wetter into the middle of next week. The upper level
pattern has not changed all that much from yesterday with a strong
upper ridge over the panhandle and Western Canada to start the
long range period out. This ridge gradually shifts east into mid
next week allowing some troughs from the S to sneak into the area.
By later next week the panhandle will be stuck in the southerly
flow between the ridge in Canada and the trough over the Bering
Sea.
The forecast for the early part of the long range has not changed.
We are still looking at a period of dry and warmer weather as
southerly flow pushes a warmer air mass into the area. 850 mb
temps are still forecast to push 4 to 7 degrees C Sun through Mon
night across the panhandle resulting in surface high temps
reaching into the 40s or low 50s and freezing levels rising to
5000 to 6000 feet Sun into Mon. Panhandle winds will generally be
20 kt or less. One change to the forecast was to warm day time
highs Sunday and Monday. There is the potential for Monday
temperatures to reach around 60 degrees as 850mb temps of 8-10 C
will be present. Confidence is low at this time though as there
is uncertainty on if these temperatures will be able to mix to the
surface.
The Gulf water however, are expected to be rather windy with high
wave heights during this time, particularly in the central gulf
where a front that will be blocked from moving further E remains
mostly stationary. Wide spread 30-40 kt winds for the central
gulf and sea heights reaching 20 ft or more are likely.
Tue into the rest of next week has a trend toward wetter and
cooler again (though not very cool). Uncertainty remains on when
the rain will return, but Mon night into Tuesday morning is
looking more favorable. The return of the rain is brought by a
series of lows that will move NW through the eastern gulf from Tue
onward. Drastic disagreement on where those lows go and how fast
they track though. How much rain and wind various areas of the
panhandle get depends on where these lows track and when, so other
then a general trend toward wetter and possibly more wind the mid
to late week forecast remain rather uncertain at this time.
