.SHORT TERM.../Through Saturday night/...As of Thursday
afternoon, a front is tracking towards SE AK. Radar returns over
the open ocean are getting picked up from the Biorka Island radar
and wind reports from the open ocean have been over 30 kts with
gusts near 45 kts.
This front will continue to track towards the panhandle tonight,
leaving SE AK with a rainy and windy Friday.
Starting with the marine winds for tonight and tomorrow - gale
force winds are already happening in the gulf and Gale Warnings
will be in effect for all coastal waters by the evening. The
stronger winds will snake their way into the inner channels as
the front advances eastward so, Small Craft Advisories will be in
effect for most of the inner channels beginning Friday morning.
Land winds tonight and tomorrow will pick up speed to around 10 to
25 mph with some gusts in the 30 to 40 mph range. Lighter winds
expected for northern Lynn Canal.
Light rain will arrive along the coast this evening and will
spread through the panhandle during the overnight. Friday will be
a rainy day with mostly light to moderate rain lasting through the
day with times of heavy rain, especially late Friday and Friday
night.
The storm system will begin to move southeast and weaken Saturday
so the rain chances will decrease in the north while the south
will continue to see light to moderate rain on Saturday with
chances decreasing Saturday night.
Temperatures won’t really be remarkable with lows in the 40s to
low 50s and highs in the 50s.
.LONG TERM.../Sat through Thu as of 10 pm Wed/ Upper level pattern
for the long range has not changed all that much from yesterday. A
broad upper trough remains over Alaska and the Bering Sea area
with general SW flow over the panhandle through mid next week. The
only major shift in this pattern is the shift of the upper low in
the Bering Sea, that is anchoring the trough, to the east into
interior Alaska early next week. Guidance has a better handle on
timing and how it does this compared to yesterday so mid range
forecast confidence is noticeably improved as a result.
At the surface, We will still be dealing with lingering effects
from the Fri system at the very start of the long range Sat
morning. Winds and rain in many areas will still be elevated, but
will be starting to diminish as we head into Sat night. The next
front will not give us much of a break before moving in. Timing of
this front has improved over yesterday with guidance settling
more on Sun night and early Mon for it to move through. Winds have
been increased at that time with 20 to 30 kt winds now expected
for the gulf waters and 15 to 20 kt winds for many inner channel
areas. Rain is still expected with most of it aimed at the NE gulf
coast. Expect around 1.5 inches of rain there with lower amounts
the farther SE you go.
After Mon, forecast confidence starts to suffer as different
models have different ideas on how to handle the various short
waves that are wrapping around the upper low over the state. What
is more confident is that SW onshore flow will prevail over the
panhandle overall, and we are expected to remain wet for most of
the extended period. In addition there are indications that some
cooler air will be starting to move into the area from Tue onward.
850 mb temps over the northern half of the panhandle may be
dropping to near 0C. This may not result in much cooling of temps
at the surface, but snow levels in the mountains will possibly be
dropping from around 6000 feet to around 3500 feet over the north
by Wed. Combined with the damp conditions still around, this may
result in some snow showing up on mountain peaks mid next week.
