.SHORT TERM...Satellite analysis and imagery reveals breaks in the
clouds across much of the panhandle through Monday afternoon.
Showers have continued to linger throughout the day, especially
around Sitka and Pelican. Temperatures in some areas have also
climbed into the low 60s, and breaks in the cloud cover have
enabled temperatures to surge upwards through the day in multiple
locations.
In the southern panhandle, a new cloud deck has begun to filter
in ahead of an advancing system. A recent ASCAT pass also
indicated the presence of 40 kt winds associated with the low.
This system, which has proven to be a significant forecast
challenge, will move N through the overnight hours on Monday. This
will bring rain to the southern panhandle by Monday evening, rain
to the central panhandle through the overnight hours, and
steadily increasing chances through the morning hours on Tuesday
across the Icy Strait Corridor. Significantly lower chances of
precip are anticipated across the N panhandle, where offshore
winds will act as a buffer.
The precipitation looks likely to linger through the overnight
hours on Tuesday before diminishing through the day on Wednesday.
Expect that some areas could have some chances at seeing some sun
by Wednesday afternoon as offshore flow increasingly takes over
across the area.
Temperatures will be fairly warm through Tuesday, especially in
the N panhandle as breaks in the clouds pave the way for warmer
high temperatures. Otherwise, expect highs in the 50s and 60s
across the area through the forecast period. Much of the warmest
weather will continue to be over the N panhandle, where chances
of breaks in the clouds remain greatest. Winds in the southern
panhandle will increase through Monday night, reaching small craft
levels by Tuesday in some of the inner channels. Gale Force winds
are anticipated in some of the outer coastal waters, as well as
Clarence Strait. Conditions on land will be breezy, and strong
winds are anticipated across places like Ketchikan, Metlakatla,
and coastal areas up through Port Alexander on Tuesday. Forecaster
confidence is average.
.LONG TERM.../ Wednesday through Monday as of 9 pm Sunday / The
remains of the long wave through that had been over the gulf for
over a week is forced inland to British Columbia will continuing
to weaken. Another strong short wave in the mid level flow,
moves from the western Aleutians to the western gulf by Thursday,
before going through the panhandle on Friday. The closed low in
this trough Friday is also showing some positioning differences
from the northern gulf to the southern gulf. At the present WPC
solution is running roughly through the middle at least to Friday,
through Friday night the newer solutions of GFS (00z) are little
stronger the through as it pushes through Southeast Alaska. A
minor ridge behind this feature moves across the gulf through
weekend as a developing large upper low moves into the Northern
Bering Sea and will be in positions to drive systems across the
Aleutians to the gulf gulf for the next week.
For surface weather and fronts and winds, Wednesday should see
showers tapering off over the panhandle. A narrow ridge forced
over the eastern gulf and panhandle Thursday as a moderate 982 mb
low moves into the western gulf. Based on the gradient, and
orientation, we have brought a band of 35 kt gales into the
coastal waters Thursday night and 25 kts into inner channels
headed to early Friday morning along with rain from the frontal
band.
After the Thursday/Friday system, showers will continue through
the weekend with perhaps a bit of improvement Sunday as ridge
moves over the Gulf of Alaska. Lowered PoPs to chance levels,
although it could be dry, will have to see how this set up gets
closer to present time.
