low moves west to east across the gulf Thursday into Friday.

.SHORT TERM...Unsettled weather will continue through this evening
across SE Alaska. Showers are anticipated for many locations, and
the occasional thunderstorm can't be ruled out for much of the
area from Juneau southward. A weak wave will quickly transit over
the S panhandle, bringing with it more rain before moving into
Canada through the overnight hours. Onshore flow will help
maintain a chance of showers through much of Monday, but many
areas in the N and Central Panhandle may get out of the showers
and enjoy breaks in the clouds during the afternoon and evening
hours.

By Monday night, attention turns towards a system moving up from
the S, bringing with it still more rain for the region. This rain
will work its way Northward through the day on Tuesday, though
expect that by Tuesday afternoon, there will be a definite
convective component to the precipitation. One challenge continues
to remain the exact track of the low responsible for the precip,
with the models having largely come into agreement that it will
come onshore over SE but disagreeing on its location and
intensity. For the time being, chose to blend the GFS and the
ECMWF together in order to extend the PoP field to cover a wider
area. This being said, it is looking increasingly likely that
Yakutat will successfully avoid the Tuesday system. It also looks
possible that Skagway and Haines may escape the bulk of the
precip, though given uncertainty in the system's movement, cannot
yet say this with certainty.

Temperatures will exhibit a warming trend Monday and Tuesday
reaching into the low to mid 60s as increased breaks in the
clouds lead to warmer high temperatures. Winds in the Inner
Channels will largely subside into the 5-10 kt range by Monday
afternoon, but will begin increasing again Monday night. By
Tuesday, think that winds in some of the S inner channels and
outer coastal waters could reach small craft intensity as the new
low moves into the area. Gales will also be a possibility for the
outer coastal waters which needs to be closely monitored.
Forecaster confidence is average.

.LONG TERM.../ Tuesday through Sunday as of 10 pm Saturday / At
500 mb, a closed low lifts northeast out of the North Pacific to
be just west of Sitka by midday Tuesday, the long wave trough the
closed low was in will be pushed through the panhandle area by a
ridge building over the western and central gulf by early
Thursday. Another strong short wave in the mid level flow, moves
from the western Aleutians to the western gulf by Thursday,
before going through the panhandle on Friday. Model agreement
aloft is a hit / miss situation, the less than stellar agreement
Tuesday and Wednesday continues with some fairly significant
timing/strength issues still being shown. A closed low off of
Chichagof Island into Wednesday or a weak low/trough moving
through the panhandle.

The trough moving into the gulf on Thursday has better model
agreement between the operational solutions. These are from the
18z and 00z runs, the WPC solution was based on earlier data, and
as such, didn't have as strong of a trough to move across the gulf
for the end of week. Anticipate that may change in the morning.

Tuesday the surface low from moves northward over the southern
then central panhandle, start very early Tuesday morning by
Tuesday afternoon, expect the surface low to be west of Southern
Baranof Island between 20 to 150 nm. Have keep the gale force
winds for the coastal waters. Will have 20 to 25 kt winds into the
inner channels. The low will likely move into the panhandle
Wednesday.

The next weather system for late Thursday through Friday night,
will likely have winds of 25 kt for coastal waters, at first
glance of the system, will need to watch this as it develops
through the next few days. Steady rain will return as the front
moves through the area too.
