Southeast Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SHORT TERM...The warm and sunny weather that has been the big
story recently will slowly come to an end over the next few days.
Marine stratus off the coast of SE AK will push into coastal
areas, as well as parts of the Icy Strait Corridor Sunday night.
Cloud cover will rebuild over the northern panhandle on Monday an
easterly wave moves over the Yukon. Some of the associated
moisture will make its way south and create chances of showers
across the northern panhandle and the coastal mountains. This will
work in concert with cooling 850mb temperatures to keep
temperatures generally cooler across most areas.

The big story will be the arrival of the next impactful system. An
upper level closed low will continue rotating over the gulf, while
its lower level reflection phases with and is absorbed by a new
system moving into the southern gulf. Although some uncertainty
in the timing and exact location of the new low's center remain,
it is looking increasingly likely that Tuesday through at least
the middle of the week will see rain dominate across the southern
panhandle. IVT values will approach 700, and given the SE flow
and plentiful moisture evident across the lower and mid levels of
the atmospheric column, think that this precipitation could yield
some fairly significant totals-and river rises are a possibility.
Will be closely monitoring a possible embedded shortwave during
the late Tuesday and Wednesday morning timeframe. Although
guidance oftentimes struggles with predicting shortwaves, should
this verify, it would have the potential to deliver an additional
surge of moisture to the southern half of the area.

.LONG TERM.../Tuesday through Saturday night/...This extended
range forecast period begins with an upper low centered over the
central Gulf and an upper trough extending northeast from the low
over the northern Panhandle. At that time, a digging jet on the
western flank of the low will cause it to move first south to the
southern Gulf, then east to a location west of Vancouver Island
by Friday morning. At that time, a pronounced upper trough will be
entering the western Gulf from Bristol Bay. By Saturday morning,
an upper low will pinch off of the trough in the vicinity of the
Kenai Peninsula.

At the surface, a very weak pressure pattern over the Gulf and a
weakening ridge over the far eastern Gulf and Southeast Alaska
will be replaced by a developing, but equally weak low that will
enter the southeast Gulf by Tuesday afternoon. In yesterday's
model depictions, this low was much more impressive but is now being
depicted as not much of a going concern. Still, the overall
circulation will dominate all of the eastern and central Gulf by
Wednesday morning. This feature will linger over the Gulf until
Friday morning and then dissipate. A ridge will pass mostly to the
south of the Gulf from west to east by Monday afternoon and by
Sunday, it will be situated over the eastern Gulf, butting up
against low pressure over western Canada.

Easterly wave shower activity will have resumed by Tuesday morning
with a strong band of showers oriented east to west along the
southern periphery of The Yukon. At that same time, the weak
surface low to the south will be pushing a poorly organized warm front
north over the southern Panhandle. By late Tuesday night, a much
better cold front will approach the outer coast and likely spread
heavy rain over the central and southern Panhandle Wednesday
evening and overnight. The entire complex will shift east with the
parent low and by Friday will be exiting the area and moving into
British Columbia. The subsequent surface ridge should give
Southeast Alaska a bit of a break from the precipitation for the
weekend.

Easterly wave shower activity and the front will likely keep
skies mostly cloudy through the majority of this long range
forecast period and daytime highs will be a little cooler than
they have been in recent days...ranging from the lower to upper
60s through mid week. Longer range model guidance is indicating a
return to highs in the low to mid 70s by the end of the work week.
Tuesday will feature marginal small craft winds over the
southeast Gulf as the surface low makes its closest approach to
the Panhandle, but wind speeds there will drop back down to 10-15
kts by Wednesday afternoon. Meanwhile, winds will increase to high
end small craft intensity on Wednesday over the southern portions
of offshore zone 310. -Fritsch
