Southeast Alaska Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Juneau AK 209 PM AKDT Wed Jul 21 2021 .SHORT TERM.../Through Thursday night/...A surface ridge situated over the Panhandle is being amplified by an approaching weather front to the west and entrenched low pressure over the interior of Alaska and The Yukon. In spite of this, small craft winds over northern Lynn Canal have relaxed, so the small craft advisory there has been cancelled. Meanwhile, winds in Skagway (and presumably Taiya Inlet) are blowing 15 to 25 mph. On the outside, the approaching front will produce southeasterly small craft winds from Cape Suckling down past the Dixon Entrance by Thursday afternoon and then diminish overnight Thursday night. So far, the only inner channels response is expected to be small craft southeasterly winds over Clarence Strait Thursday afternoon and evening. While winds at the surface may not be overly impactful, low level winds aloft will likely result in some significant turbulence for aviation operations. At this time, it appears that the only locations to be spared from a rocky ride will be north of the Icy Strait corridor through Thursday night. Convective activity and thunderstorms over British Columbia and The Yukon got off to an early start today and easterly wave activity continues to drive individual cells to the west. But the low level stability provided by the amplified ridge over the Panhandle coupled with the geographic barrier of the Coast Mountains and ice field along the international border will be extremely hard to penetrate by all but the strongest storms. This is reflected in convective and instability parameters depicted in the model data today, so no mention of thunderstorms was included in the afternoon forecast. The view out the window here at the forecast office is looking a little more like a typical late July day here in Southeast Alaska with a bright but grey sky and no shadows cast on the ground. The pavement is, however dry at the moment. Across the region, cloud ceilings range from below 1000 feet to as high as 5000 feet and rain showers continue to be reported in various places. Overnight tonight, those rain showers will be concentrated along the coast mountains, then diminishing by morning. Focus then shifts to the outer coast, where frontal precipitation will be arriving over the southern outer coast by late Thursday morning, then the remainder of the outer coast by Thursday afternoon/evening. Categorical PoPs will be concentrated from the Icy Strait corridor and south with maximum coverage and intensity occurring late Thursday night as we head into the extended range forecast period. The previous forecast remains on track so, apart from the adjustments made to northern Lynn Canal, virtually no changes were made. .LONG TERM.../Friday through Wednesday as of 10 PM Tuesday/... The long term period features a low in the gulf which will meander and weaken there through the weekend and into early next week. The low eventually dissipates as ridging builds into NW canada and Southern Alaska by the middle of next week. Deterministic models and ensembles are all in a general agreement with this pattern. Going into next week deterministic models diverge on the details regarding the exact strength and placement of the ridging; however both EC and GFS ensemble are in good agreement it will generally be over NW Canada and Southern Alaska. As far as sensible weather, showers will be present Friday through early next week with continuous southerly/southeasterly onshore flow and waves of energy rotating in around the low in the gulf. Guidance currently depicts the great coverage of showers across the Southern Panhandle and along the higher terrain of Baranof Island and the Coast Mountains. Expect the driest portion of the Panhandle to be Upper Lynn Canal as the mountains tend to wring out much of the moisture as it makes its way SE to NW across the Panhandle. Overall not expecting a complete washout as shower activity will have a slow diminishing trend through mid next week. Further details regarding timing of each wave and where the most widespread shower activity occurs will be fine tuned as the weekend approaches. Winds through the period remain relatively light, especially through the Inner Channels. Winds 10 kt or less expected for much of the weekend and into next week. If more sunshine and surface heating occur in between showers, then stronger afternoon sea breezes may occur in Icy Strait and Lynn Canal. An increase in winds in Northern Lynn Canal is also possible mid next week as surface ridging builds into the Panhandle; however confidence is still low regarding the exact pressure gradient pattern associated with the surface ridge. Expect temperatures to remain close to climatological norms for this time of year with smaller diurnal fluctuations due to increased cloud cover and showers. With 850mb temps steady around +3-5C and mostly cloudy skies, expect highs generally in the lower 60s with lows in the low 50s. Breaks in the clouds during the afternoon could lead to a few warmer spots, especially across Upper Lynn Canal. Confidence remains high through the period regarding the overall pattern. Lower confidence exists in the smaller details of each wave passing and where exactly the highest concentration of showers will be. These details will be fine tuned as the weekend approaches.
