Southeast Alaska Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Juneau AK 301 PM AKDT Tue Jul 20 2021 .SHORT TERM...Satellite imagery reveals that the low south of Haida Gwaii is STILL there. Surface progs are finally washing it out, but upper level charts maintain a closed circulation through the duration of the short range forecast period as is moves slowly to the east and the British Columbia coastline, then northeast and finally out of the area. Afternoon thunderstorm activity is beginning as of early this afternoon from Central British Columbia north to the Yukon. Easterly wave activity is carrying these cells to the west and all seems on track for a slight chance of thunderstorms on the U.S. side of the international border near Taku Inlet, the far northern inner channels, and northern Lynn Canal. After this evening, thunderstorm potential diminishes pretty much all together as a ridge shifts east and pushes a slightly more stable airmass over the Panhandle. Ridging will be short lived as a front moves in from the west across the central Gulf on Wednesday. Precipitation from this front is not expected to arrive along the outer coast until Thursday, with showers remaining in the forecast until then. Once the frontal precipitation arrives, it will remain with us through the remainder of this short range forecast period. The brief period of ridging at the surface will act in conjunction with lower pressure over the Yukon to create small craft southerlies over northern Lynn Canal on Wednesday. Beyond then, small craft winds associated with the approaching front will spread west to east across the Gulf through Wednesday night. East Gulf winds will peak late in the day Thursday with southeasterlies up to 30 kts from offshore Cape Decision to Cape Fairweather and again from Icy Bay west to Cape Suckling. Clear skies over the central Panhandle today allowed some locations to reach near 70 degrees, which is above normal for late July. The situation will change tomorrow when increased cloudiness will result in highs for the day from the upper 50s to lower 60s. Overnight lows, however, will continue to trend slightly above normal in the low to mid 50s due to the cloud cover. .LONG TERM.../Thursday through Tuesday as of 10 PM Monday/...A front moves into the Panhandle on Thursday, bringing increased cloudiness, marginally cooler temperatures, and decent chances of rain for the southern 3/4 of the Panhandle. The rain will become more periodic in nature by the latter half of the weekend. The rain looks to pick up again by Tuesday of next week for the southern Panhandle as the same surface low that will have been meandering and weakening in the southeastern Gulf that brought the front into southeast Alaska approaches the southern Panhandle from the southwest. By Wednesday of next week, that low looks like it will continue to weaken into a wave and move ashore somewhere in the southern Panhandle / Dixon Entrance area. There appears to be some enhancement in IVT values with the approaching front, but nothing that appears to be particularly impactful in terms of an atmospheric river, so far. The surface ridge that will have built in and sharpened over the Panhandle looks to remain in place to a varying degree of strength through the entire long term forecast period, helping to bring general onshore flow and chances for showers to areas outside of the primary influence of any nearby lows or fronts through the period. Winds of up to 30 knots are possible along the outer coast and around the Dixon Entrance as the front approaches the Panhandle around the Thursday timeframe of this week. Waves up to 11 ft are possible along the outer coast with the strongest winds as the front approaches the Panhandle. Winds look to remain relatively light at around 15 knots or less for the majority of the Inner Channels and Panhandle. High temperatures look to remain mild across the Panhandle with the highest values of the upper 60s to lower 70s across the extreme northeastern Panhandle around the Skagway / Northern Lynn Canal area. Recent model guidance and temperatures aloft at 850mb appear to support this. That area has the lowest chances for precipitation, highest chances for some breaks in the clouds through the period. Generally, the farther south you go through the long term forecast period, the higher the chances will be for cloudier skies, rainfall, and more moderated/cooler surface temperatures. Forecast confidence is around average for the long term as model agreement was reasonable, but not perfect as there was some divergence between the models on the location and strength of the aforementioned surface low pressure center as time progresses through the forecast period. && .AJK WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES...
