.SHORT TERM...The forecast remains largely on track. An occluding
low continues to slowly retrograde west over the Alaska
Peninsula. Meanwhile, its associated front is making its way NE
towards the panhandle. The front is entering the eastern gulf and
will arrive by Wednesday night with its triple point pushing
onshore by early Thursday morning. Moderate to heavy rain will
spread inland along the Icy Strait corridor and south down the
outer coast overnight tonight, then weaken through the day
Thursday. Even after the front has passed, a plume of moisture
will continue to stream in over the region, so precipitation will
continue through much of the short range period. It does look
increasingly likely that a wave will move up and into the Northern
and central panhandle on Friday- bringing a renewed surge of
precip to that area. This wave will also pull moisture away from
the S panhandle, allowing skies in the south to begin slowly
clearing.
Even though the low is in the process of occluding, the front will
be quite strong for this time of the year. Peak conditions over
the eastern Gulf will occur early this evening with gale force
winds as far south as Cape Fairweather. West of Icy Bay, an
easterly barrier jet will also be present around the same time.
Inner channel winds will rise to small craft levels through the
late evening and overnight hours across the area before slowly
relaxing down to a still-blustery 20 kt in many channels through
the day on Thursday. The exceptions to this will be Lynn Canal and
Clarence Strait, which will continue to see small craft winds
through the day. On land no strong winds are anticipated,
although coastal areas like Yakutat, Sitka, and Port Alexander
will experience gusty conditions.
The next big story is the anticipated warmth. Low level warm air
advection from the south will result in daytime highs in the 50s
and 60s Thursday and Friday in spite of the extensive cloud
cover, but the major warmup really begins on Saturday. With 50mb
temperatures progged to approach 20C, 70s and even 80s (F) will
not be out of the question for parts of the southern panhandle.
Diurnal spread between the daily highs and overnight lows will be
minimal under overcast skies - only about 5 to 7 degrees for most
locations. Overall forecast confidence is average.
.LONG TERM.../Friday through next Wednesday/...A mountain of high
pressure over southern BC and the Pacific Northwest dominates the
extended forecast. A wave connected to an atmospheric river
presses a second period of moderate to heavy precipitation into
the northern Panhandle Friday. But the ridge to the southeast
begins to shove the wave to the northwest Saturday through Sunday
taking with it the bulk of the rain chances away from the Capital
City and much of the rest of the Panhandle back into the
northeast gulf coast region. With all of this change, northern Inner
Channel winds will eventually shift from southerly to northerly to
match the northerlies of the southern Inner Channels.
Farther south across the southern Panhandle, 850 mb temperatures
climb from 10 C up to near 20 C Saturday and Sunday. As a result
warm days lie ahead for much of the southern half of the
Panhandle, precariously just southeast of the rain-cooled air to
the north. Widespread 70s are a safe bet for Prince of Wales and
Revillagigedo Islands this weekend. An 80 or two is certainly
possible. In fact in coordination with Environment Climate Change
Canada we raised temperatures in Hyder to the mid 80s by Sunday.
Analysis of sounding climatology reveal the 17 C mark at 850 as
near record territory for the date.
As the wave lifts northwest through the weekend, clearing skies
will expand northward allowing these very warm 850 mb temperatures
to mix down to the surface more efficiently. While the synoptic
map is debatable on any thermal trough setting up in the south and
any migration to the north, channel breezes could play a role in
tempering expectations. But depending on how much sunshine
filters through the mid to high level clouds over the north and
the strength of channel breezes we could see widespread 70s in the
north even sooner than next Monday through Wednesday.
Next week as the main low to our west shifts to the central
Aleutians from Bristol Bay, we should experience sunnier skies and
relatively warm temperatures throughout the Panhandle. Too early
to say how warm, but the potential is there for widespread 70s for
sure with some inevitable 60s to the south as the thermal trough
migrates northward and allows that Hecate Strait air conditioning
to roar back through Clarence Strait. A wave from northern BC
could carry some convective moisture across the Coast Mountains
into the Inner Channels, but it is way too early to speculate
whether this will actually happen.

Timing has been shifted slightly for an unseasonably strong storm that will bring periods of heavy rain and gusty winds to the region. Rain will move into the southern outer coast Wednesday afternoon, then spread inland and northward through the evening. Wind gusts of 20 to 40 mph will arrive with the rain. Heaviest rainfall is expected during the overnight hours through Thursday morning. 1 to 3 inches of rainfall is expected across most of the Panhandle through Thursday night, with greatest amounts in Yakutat. A second round of heavy rain is expected Friday, with the primary focus on the the NE Gulf coast and northern panhandle, then will slowly diminish Saturday. Those northern areas can expect rainfall amounts Friday through Saturday to be 0.75 to 2 inches, again with Yakutat receiving the most. At this time, the flooding threat appears low; however river rises are anticipated.
