Southeast Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SHORT TERM...The wave train of lows and frontal bands tracking
across the gulf from the west continue over the next few days.
However, temperatures aloft will be decreasing with the next two
lows, so a transition to more convective/showery conditions is
expected. Timing the "lulls" in between each frontal band is
difficult since models tend to over spread the POP compared to
observations. One such lull/break happened today. Interestingly,
the stable environment and SW flow at the mid and upper levels
actually caused some standing wave clouds and lee side shadowing -
resulting large breaks in the clouds for the northern inner
channels. Flow backs more southerly tonight though as a low moves
into the central gulf from the SW, putting an end to the rain
shadow for those locations.

The southern panhandle has seen the bulk of the rain today, and that
will be the case tonight as well. A short-wave/vorticity max is
tracking northward (can also be seen on satellite) toward the
southern outside waters. Expect this to cause rainfall to pick up as
it moves through the south this evening, then bring rain likely
all the way north overnight. The cloudy skies (or increasing
clouds for the north) will cause the diurnal temperature change
tonight to be fairly small.

CAA with the next low will cause precip on Wednesday to become more
showery through the day. High temperatures tomorrow will vary
greatly between anywhere that gets some sunny breaks (upper 50s to
60) and places that stay in the clouds (low 50s). Most MOS
forecasts were on the higher end, so that makes me optimistic for
more breaks than is currently forecasted.

A band of vorticity rotating around the low looks to move over the
northern half of the region Wed evening into Thursday. This will be
the next in the series of organized rain shower bands. The
surface low weakens/dissipates on Thursday, but the upper level
low stays in tact over the northern gulf coast slightly longer,
keeping showers likely or greater for Yakuat.

The next stacked low tracks eastward across the southern gulf
through Thursday and will take over the showers already in place.
Expect increasing winds over the southern outside waters to 25-
30kt as the low moves in Thursday night. Some shift in flow due
to the more southern low track will cause a decrease in POP for
the northern inner channels, so have gone above guidance for temps
in those areas for Thursday and Friday highs.

.LONG TERM.../Thursday to Tuesday as of 10 pm Monday / Thursday
starts as the complex multi-center low aloft over the Bering Sea,
western half of the state and the western Gulf of Alaska begins to
unravel from the solid cross model agreement.

The upper low that was in the western gulf weakens as it moves to
west of Prince of Wales Island roughly, while the upper level low
that was near the central Aleutians has weakened and moved into or
through the western Gulf of Alaska. By Sunday an upper level low
seems to be near Haida Gwaii, and in this position the onshore flow
is diverted to an offshore pattern, at least for a few days.
Long range solutions have started drying out or stopping the showers
over the panhandle for Sunday and Monday. Will need to watch this
more, as it sets up, the 20-30% PoPs could be much less.

Wind forecasts only saw some minor changes, a very slight
increase in wind speed Thursday to Friday for the Southeast Gulf
waters, the potentially E-W flow channels with a low moving into
the southeast gulf.

Ensemble Anomalies and Extreme Forecast Index point to Wed-Thu to
maybe early Friday will be heavier than normal rainfall, thinking
mainly for the southern half of the panhandle. Should not cause any
flooding issues, though streams and creeks will rise and further
examination of the next day or so will either firm up thinking or
lead to targeted messaging.

Overall confidence is average to slightly above average through
the weekend.
