late Wednesday while rotating numerous bands of precipitation
over the eastern Gulf and Southeast Alaska. Outlook. A second
low will enter the southern Gulf from the west Thursday night,

Southeast Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SHORT TERM.../Through Tue night/ Wet weather continues to be the
main focus of the short range period today. Especially for Mon, as
a pair of short waves move in from the south dragging some
tropical moisture along for the ride. Wave one (arriving early Mon
morning) is aimed more at the northern panhandle, while wave two
(arriving Mon Afternoon) is aimed more at the central panhandle.
IVT guidance on Mon shows some moderate values pushing into the
panhandle which is pulling IWV values in the 1 to 1.5 inch range
into the area. Expected rainfall has been increased to around 1 to
2 inches (locally higher amounts possible) through late Mon night
as a result. Local rivers and streams expected to remain in their
banks, but higher flow levels are expected to be reached by Mon
afternoon and night, especially in the smaller basins.

Tue Afternoon into Tue Evening is actually looking drier compared
to the previous forecast for the northern and central panhandle.
A new short wave is coming up from the south and the offshore flow
ahead of it will help diminish the rain chances for areas north
of Frederick Sound. Can't completely rule out a shower or two
lingering in the area, but rainfall amounts will be significantly
reduced compared to Mon. This will not last however as the short
wave continues north it will spread rain over the rest of the
panhandle by late Tue Night. Guidance varies on how fast this
will occur (ECMWF is the fastest while the Nam is the slowest by
around 6 hours) but the general consensus is turning wetter for
most areas by late Tue night.

As for winds, most areas are seeing lower winds then yesterday at
this time. The highest being 20 kt at Scull Island and Cross
Sound. These winds will mostly remain at 20 kt or below for the
inner channels through the short range period. The exception will
be Clarence Strait and Cross Sound where 25 kt winds will show up
with the arrival of the second short wave Mon Evening. Out in the
Gulf, 20 to 25 kt winds will be more the norm, especially as the
various short waves move through on Mon. These winds are expected
to lighten into Tue.

.LONG TERM...Wednesday through Sunday...As of 9PM Sat...Period
begins with another front pushing inland with precip chances
diminishing slightly Wed into Thu. Overall, there is little
change to the wet pattern over the AOR through the period.
Deterministic and ensemble guidance are in good agreement through
late next week in the upper level low over the AK pen persisting
through the week with systems continuing to bring precip to the
region. Deterministic guidance diverges significantly late in the
week, but ensembles suggest a possible pattern change developing
next weekend as the upper low begins to move E then SE. Overall,
inherited forecast represented this well and confidence in wet
pattern persisting through most of the week remains above average.
