Southeast Alaska Forecast Discussion...CORRECTED

.SHORT TERM.../Through Monday/ Wet weather continues to be the
main story for the rest of the Memorial Day weekend, except for
Sat afternoon and evening. The rain that has been effecting the
northern panhandle over the last few days is starting to pull back
to the W this afternoon. The rain stopped, or became very light,
in the central panhandle in the late morning and the rain at
Juneau, Gustavus, and Hoonah stopped around midday. The culprit is
the increasing offshore flow ahead of the next front coming up
from the S. The rain should retreat to areas W of Cape Fairweather
by this evening.

The dry period will not last however as the next front will be
spreading rain over all of the panhandle by late tonight into Sun
and at least two short waves troughs behind it (one late Sun
night and early Mon, the second Mon evening) will continue to
provide rain for the area through Mon night. Rainfall amounts will
be comparable to what was measured with the previous systems. The
first front is expected to drop around 0.5 to 1 inch of rain
through Sun evening (highest amounts around the northeast gulf
coast, Icy strait corridor and Juneau), while the two troughs
behind it will drop around 1 to 2.5 inches from late Sun night
through late Mon night (highest amounts from Icy Strait southward
to the southern panhandle). There is some uncertainty on when
exactly these troughs will move into the panhandle, but the
general consensus is prepare for a wet rest of the holiday
weekend.

Wind wise, the windiest spots have been in the northern panhandle,
Clarence Strait, and out in the gulf today. Yakutat and Skagway
have routinely seen gusts in excess of 30 kt throughout the day,
and the buoys in the gulf have had winds of 25 to 30 kt most of
the day. Gales are still expected in some parts of the gulf
tonight as the front comes up. Meanwhile, the winds over the
northern and central panhandle will diminish this evening only to
become breezy (15 to 20 kt) again late tonight into Sun as the
front comes inland. Afterwards, winds for most areas are expected
to remain in the 10 to 20 kt range for the rest of the short
range period with the highest winds occurring as the troughs move
through the area.

.LONG TERM.../Monday through next Saturday/...An upper low in the
western gulf conspires to provide a direct connection from
the subtropical moisture of the central Pacific northeast to the
Alaska Panhandle. Rain it will bring. Summer-like temperatures it
will not. One such disturbance pushing north should begin
spreading heavy rain into the southern Panhandle Monday through
Tuesday. Guidance has trended the rain's edge northward into the
north-central Panhandle including Juneau so the holiday weekend
looks to be even a little wetter here than what our thoughts had
imagined yesterday. All told, the Panhandle should receive
anywhere between 1 and 3 inches of rainfall between 12Z Monday and
12Z Wednesday. The last day of May promises to dampen a few
cookouts. Therefore, both pop and QPF were increased. Freezing
levels, too should rise significantly early next week to just shy
of 10K feet over the south. At this time, we feel that given the
south's relatively drier spring thus far should save them from any
impacts with the heavy rain. Adjustments to warm temperatures
yesterday for the far south still seem reasonable. Gulf winds with
this system should rise to at least small craft advisory, and
seas of 8 feet plus should be a given with such a lengthy
southwest fetch. However, fine-tuning location will be a challenge
to solve over the next day or so. Ridging ahead of any frontal
activity could mean stronger winds through Lynn Canal and Skagway.

Leading into mid-week cooler temperatures aloft begin
infiltrating the region and thus convective parameters suggest
precipitation will fall as showers toward late in the week.
Depending on what a new upper low does entering the Gulf of Alaska
from the Aleutians, we could see a break in precip, but no one in
the office is confident on that prospect, especially given our
weak and wet performance of summer for Southeast Alaska thus far.
There are no significant hints at any offshore flow. As ensembles
generally sit this low off our shores, we will likely be dealing
with it some form or rather throughout the first weekend of June.
And these metrics point to an extended dose of cooler temperatures
and above normal precipitation as well as we head deeper into
June.
