Southeast Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SHORT TERM...The strong weather system essentially continuing on
track for the panhandle as it moves to the northeast gulf. With
the slightly cooler temperature profile throughout SEAK today,
most of the precipitation stayed snow. As the low repositions
southeast slightly tonight it looks as if a band with will
organized and linger from northern Lynn Canal area across Glacier
Bay. As such under this band, the continuation of the advisory for
snow was expected for the Haines and Skagway area with an
additional 3 to 6 inches there. Surrounding zones, Gustavus,
Juneau, Hoonah, looking to see and an additional 2 to 4 inches for
tonight. Will be looking at the Haines/Skagway area as they might
need to go to Warning for tonight.

The showers will continue through Friday and then start to
diminish late Friday, mainly from the Northwest. Aiding the drying
out is that a northerly outflow winds through Lynn Canal
increasing to 35 to 40 kt Friday night. This will bring in drier
air at the lower levels.

For to the moment it seems as Saturday is the break period as SEAK
awaits a weak Sunday feature and a stronger one slated for
Monday.

.LONG TERM.../Saturday through Wednesday night/...This extended
range forecast begins with some significant changes occurring
aloft at the very start on Saturday morning. The previous night, a
sharply defined, negatively tilted upper level trough will have
pushed through. Behind it, strong and very deep northwesterly flow
will be advecting in an anomalously cold low level airmass from
the Alaska interior with a short trajectory across the
northeastern Gulf. This will serve as a reminder that, although
Winter is over, the winter weather is not. Daytime highs on
Saturday will be notably colder than on Friday. Saturday night
lows will be colder as well, but not as dramatically so. The good
news is that the jetstream will shift north and place Southeast
Alaska on the warm side of the jet and resulting upper ridge for
much of the remainder of the extended range forecast. Daytime
highs and overnight lows will become warmer through the week with
a chance that some parts of the Panhandle will finally see temps
getting up into the 50s by mid to late next week.

Apart from the cold temps on Saturday, there will be another
reminder of winter weather in the form of snow. Any shower
activity that remains over the Panhandle on Saturday and Saturday
night will likely be in the form of snow with accumulations
currently forecast from the northeast Gulf Coast all the way down
to the Dixon Entrance. On Sunday, a low in the Bering Sea will be
pushing a front across the northern Gulf and could result in heavy
snow for the northeast Gulf Coast with non-trivial accumulations
along, and north of the Icy Strait corridor as well as Petersburg.
As warmer low level air advects in from the south, temperatures
will begin to rise (as discussed above) and the precipitation type
will gradually involve more rain and less snow, apart from
elevated sites. It is quite possible that the rain could become
heavy at times. Even as this front dissipates, another will be
moving in rapidly from the southwest Tuesday or Tuesday night.
Waves along this second front are looking like they will keep the
bulk of the mid week precipitation focused over the northeast Gulf
Coast.
