.SHORT TERM...Wet conditions persist through this afternoon.
Aloft, a trough digs south into the gulf displacing the upper
ridge that once sat over the panhandle to the east. The upper
level trough will remain over the panhandle through Friday. At the
surface, a low has developed over Prince William Sound with a
surface high southeast of the gulf. Along the two merging flow
patterns, precipitation has become more enhanced and moves onshore
the panhandle. The surface low is expected to remain near
stationary but an associated frontal band will push northeast
through the panhandle late Tuesday night into Wednesday
morning. Greatest QPF values are likely during this time with a
stronger moisture support. Widespread precipitation is expected
to transition over to showers through the day Wednesday as the
surface low occludes and dissipates in the central gulf. Although
the more organized low will have dissipated, a broad area of low
pressure will remain in its place keeping shower activity over the
central and southern panhandle through Thursday. To the north,
dryer conditions will be present has offshore flow limits qpf.
Temperatures have warmed through Tuesday morning, putting most
locations well above freezing. Exceptions include Yakutat and the
Klondike Hwy, where temperatures have remained near freezing. Due
to this, snow is ongoing and is expected to continue through the
night with minor accumulations near Yakutat. Near White Pass, a
Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 10 AM Wednesday
for up to 10 inches of snow and winds gusting as high as 50 mph.
Elsewhere, as temperatures continue to warm to the upper 30s and
low 40s, overnight lows will fight to drop back to freezing. For
tonight, slightly lowered temperatures to near freezing allowing
for a brief transition to rain/snow and or all snow through the
central and northern panhandle tonight. Any accumulations are
expected to be minor with the greatest accumulations in Yakutat
and near the Haines/Klondike Hwy boarders. By Wednesday morning, a
transition back to all rain before the frontal band pivots to the
SE pushing the more organized precipitation into Canada. Behind
the front, CAA causes temperatures to cool causing scattered rain
and snow showers to once again prevail through Thursday.
Winds are expected to increase through Tuesday evening has the
frontal band pushes through the panhandle. Along the outside
waters and through the inner channels, strongest winds of 25 kt to
35 kt can be expected tonight and Wednesday morning. Over land,
gusty conditions can also be expected with winds around 15 to 20
kts.
.LONG TERM.../Thu through Tue as of 10 pm Mon/ First half of the
extended range forecast is still dominated by the cold upper
trough that will be in place over the area through the early
weekend. NAEFS still showing around 1 standard deviation below
normal for temperature aloft over the panhandle late week. Guidance
is uncertain on what happens next for the late weekend into early
next week. ECMWF and Canadian are building an upper ridge over
the gulf, meanwhile the Gfs and most of the ensemble means are
showing another trough dropping down into the panhandle. Current
forecast favors the ensemble means approach at the moment but
confidence is rather low.
Lower in the atmosphere, showers are the rule of the day across
the panhandle as a low in the northern gulf continues to produce w
winds across the gulf. Most of these showers will be in the form
of snow especially at night given the cold air aloft. Ptype in the
afternoon hours will be a little more mixed with the daytime
heating still warming temps up into the mid to upper 30s. Any snow
accumulations are expected to be light. Forecast past Fri is still
rather uncertain with the northern gulf low dropping SE early in
the weekend only to be potentially replaced by another low in the
northern gulf that continues to send showers into the panhandle.
The timing of this transition is still in flux with the latest
guidance trending faster then yesterday. There is still a period
of drying possible this weekend as well. Saturday is still
considered to be the best possible day for drier weather but
showers could still linger in some areas.
