.SHORT TERM...Quite the weather system we had move through today.
The greatest moisture and wind with the front stayed just south of
the area and CAA on the back side of the system pushed in quicker.
This resulted in rain changing to snow MUCH earlier for the
northern panhandle, resulting in a couple inches of accumulation
in the Juneau area. However, with the front moving through
quicker, afternoon sunny breaks are already showing up on
satellite. This is allowing temperatures to warm back up well
above freezing and melt the snow that we got today.
For the south, rainfall amounts have ranged from 0.75-1.5" through
mid day and only reached moderate rates at the automated airport
stations. Rain is letting up quickly this afternoon, with
exception of Hyder where mainly snow has been reported today at
the Stewart B.C. station.
The CAA will spread over the rest of the panhandle this evening as
the system moves east into Canada. Therefore expect showers to
become more widely scattered snow showers, mixed with rain
through the evening, then diminishing from NW to SE through
Sunday morning. Snowfall accumulation tonight should be up to 1
inch.
An inverted trough will set up over the region tonight and northerly
outflow winds will increase into Sunday. Expect gales for Lynn
Canal and small craft winds through Chatham Strait and Stephens
Passage. This will help to breaks up the clouds tonight, meaning
a colder Sunday morning and potential for some patchy fog (before
the winds set in). Late March sunshine will allow us to easily to
hit the 40 degree mark Sunday afternoon.
Our 24-36hr break will come to an end as the next weather system
moves over the northern gulf late Sunday night. This will bring
precip back to the region for most of Monday, likely starting as
snow and changing to rain in the afternoon as is often the case in
the spring time. Forecast confidence in this weak low is below
average and any snowfall accumulations will need to be fine tuned
a bit more.
.LONG TERM.../ Monday through Saturday as of 10PM Friday / A flat
500 mb ridge over the Gulf of Alaska and southeast Alaska, will
give way to a strong long wave trough moving from the western
Bering Sea into the Gulf of Alaska by Wednesday evening. The
trough aloft will linger over the gulf near the panhandle into the
weekend. A strong 140+ kt jetstream starts out moving through the
ridge with the entrance region exiting the gulf on Wednesday. A
second 140 kt jet will start diving out of the Bering Sea and
southeast over the western gulf Thursday into Friday.
Model solutions through mid week are developing a low from the
western gulf into the northern gulf with a central pressure into
the lower to mid 990's mb. The low develops as it moves NE into
the gulf by accessing some colder air from the SW portion of the
state and Bristol Bay. The jet stream upper support aids the
development of the surface low as well on Wednesday.
Wind with this front look brisk with Gale force winds for the
outer coastal waters and and fair bit of rainfall or snow
anticipated for the north central panhandle. Post frontal the
showers from onshore flow about the low persisting in the NE gulf,
which keeps precip going most of the week.
Long range operational solutions, and to smaller part the WPC
solution, which has more ensemble means in it and has a weaker
reflection, are taking a secondary development out of the west
central gulf and swinging it through the southern gulf towards the
southern part of the panhandle.
Temperatures are not expected to be too far away from what
seasonable temperatures would be. March will leave with a weather
system and lead to showers of April. With the continued addition
of more more daily sunshine, SEAK will slowly start warming to
melt the snow packs, and start green up in the not to distant
future, but we're not done with snow potential quite yet.
