.UPDATE...A bit more radiational cooling Friday evening allowed
temperatures to chill down to the freezing point ahead of
precipitation. With AMDAR soundings showing a shallow freezing
layer below 2000 feet, any hopes that a rain will mix with snow
are dashing fast. And so until we can get warming at the surface
through wind or convective processes, we will have to suffer with
some freezing rain in parts of the Mendenhall Valley overnight. A
winter weather advisory has been posted through 5 AM. We hope not
to need to extend.

.PREV DISCUSSION......ISSUED AT ...331 PM AKDT Fri Mar 26 2021

SHORT TERM...A stout westerly jet is pointed at the region. This
is seen with satellite imagery in the form of mountain wave clouds
and breaks on the lee/downslope sides of the mountains. The
shadowing has kept places like the Chilkat Valley and Chatham
Strait dry today. The big story of the near term is the
atmospheric river type front becoming directed at the southern
panhandle. A wave/new low forming over the north Pacific along
the front will enhance rainfall rates tonight, then track over the
region through Saturday afternoon. This feature will bring with it
warmer air and rising snow levels across the south tonight.

Around 1.5" of rain is expected through Saturday afternoon across
the south. Heaviest rainfall rates will be after midnight through
Saturday morning from Petersburg southward. A period of strong
winds with gusts to 40mph will accompany the heavy rain for Prince
of Wales Island. These ingredients combined with an already
saturated ground could mean slide potential. The biggest factor
will be if rainfall rates exceed runoff/saturation. For the Hyder
area, 50" of snow on the grounds will likely cause drainage
issues. A special weather statement has been issued for the south
to highlight potential impacts.

As the low/trough shifts east into Canada, CAA will set in behind
it. This will cause cooling temperatures and a transition back to
mixed showers. However, the showers will be decreasing fairly
quickly, so think that snow accumulations Saturday night will be
on the low side. An inverted trough and N-NW winds on Sunday will
help to decrease clouds and allow for the nicest day of the
weekend. Despite the cooler airmass, late March sunshine will
still allow us to hit the 40 degree mark.

LONG TERM.../ Sunday through Friday as of 10PM Thursday / The
shortwave aloft over the eastern portion of the Gulf of Alaska
continues to dive southeast to the Puget Sound area by Sunday
afternoon. An upper level ridge moving into the gulf through
Sunday will be flattening from the sharper ridge that moved over
western Alaska. The ridge axis moves into western Canada by
Tuesday with another trough moving into the western Gulf
Wednesday. The flow pattern will be fast moving especially across
the top the of the flat ridge with 140 kt jet stream core driving
the small upper level impulses eastward. The jet weakens slightly
until Tuesday night with another 140 kt core into the panhandle
area.

At the surface a general broad trough of lower pressure extends
from British Columbia into the eastern gulf, but the best
positioning for the main trough lint will be near the Icy Strait-
Juneau corridor into the northeast gulf toward Prince William
Sound. As the surface ridge edges east a trough of lower pressure
will linger along the panhandle towards the Kenai Peninsula.

The incoming high pressure over the Pacific will hold over the
far southern gulf and combined with a strong low over the northern
Bering Sea will result in a strong westerly wind across the gulf
to the panhandle for the first half of the week.

Longer range models are spinning up moderately strong low for
Wednesday into the northern gulf that should be impact the
eastern gulf and panhandle area late Wednesday and into Thursday.
After that, general low pressure is expected to continue through
the rest of the week.

As result the general onshore flow from westerly flow aloft from
Monday onward will be showers until the Thursday morning system
where stratiform may be the norm with the front. P-type should be
rain for the southern half of the panhandle meanwhile a mix or
all snow for the showers in the north. Will need to keep an eye on
those amounts not to high to start.

Temperatures are expected to be seasonal for late March. Forecast
confidence is average from the weekend and next week.
