.SHORT TERM.../Through Tuesday night/...Snow continues to remain a
significant concern as the next system takes aim at the
panhandle. Temperatures throughout the day remained on the cooler
side, especially in the northern and central panhandle, and this
has helped set the stage for the approaching front. This front
will approach the panhandle from the southwest and interact with
the area beginning Monday night. The warmer air associated with
the front will help keep the southern panhandle in a
predominantly-rain focused precipitation regime. This area will
also see the most QPF out of this system as the plume of moisture
looks to focus on the south. The northern panhandle and Icy
Strait Corridor, while not receiving as much QPF, will be on the
cooler side of the system. Consequently, accumulating snow is in
the forecast. Juneau and Gustavus both have Winter Weather
Advisories in effect Monday night through Tuesday morning with 3-5
inches of snow anticipated. Other areas will likely see lower snow
totals. Do expect an eventual changeover to rain for most places,
during the the daytime hours of Tuesday but timing is not yet set
in stone and this will need to be monitored.

As the system departs, a broad upper level ridge builds across
the gulf. Consequently, drier weather is in store for much of the
area on Wednesday, though showers will remain possible in some of
the more orographically impacted areas. Forecaster confidence was
average.

.LONG TERM.../Wednesday through Monday as of 10PM Sunday/...The
models are in pretty good agreement for the majority of the long
term forecast period. They tend to diverge a bit from Sunday,
onward. A ridge over the Gulf will bring westerly onshore flow.
This will bring convective showery activity to the region due to
topographic uplift. That trend will dominate over southeast Alaska
until around Thursday afternoon into Friday when the ridge axis
over the Gulf tilts eastward and a weak storm system looks to
approach the northern Panhandle from the west, bringing increased
chances of precipitation and bringing some enhanced northerly
gradient winds up to small craft over the Lynn Canal area for the
Thursday afternoon into Friday timeframe. There is a chance that a
small convergence zone may setup over the Juneau area and the Icy
Strait corridor to bring some enhanced precipitation for several
hours to the area. A subsequent frontal system looks to move into
the area after that, but model agreement is not as great on the
location, speed, and strength of that system. They do look to
agree that the system will have a long southwesterly moisture
fetch from the central Pacific giving ample moisture supply and an
increased likelihood of appreciable precipitation. Model Integrated
Water Vapor Transport(IVT) values for that system look to approach
600 kg/(ms) as it approaches the Panhandle. Generally, the good
news is that temperatures look to be starting to moderate a bit on
average across southeast Alaska as Spring has officially arrived.
An EC/GFS/NAM/Canadian blend was used to get good average
forecast output for approximately the first 2/3 of the long term
as they were in relatively good agreement. For about the last bit
of the long term, the forecast was gently phased toward WPC due to
decreased forecast confidence.
