.UPDATE...With a persistent moisture feed and stubborn east wind,
we have elected to issue a winter storm warning for heavy snow in
Yakutat. Around one tenth of an inch of melted liquid has fallen
with ground reports already indicating around 3 inches have
fallen already. With up to 4 tenths additional liquid, we expect 2
to 4 more inches of snow to fall before precipitation transitions
to rain. Bolstering our decision were observations still holding
around 32 degrees and strong lift in the snow growth zone all day.
There is low confidence on when a rain changeover will happen. But
currently, the best guess is mid-afternoon. But we extend the
warning out through 6 PM for wiggle room.

SHORT TERM.../Through Thu night/ A saturated boundary layer over
the panhandle overnight lead to low clouds, with some light
snow/rain or freezing drizzle. Most of the freezing drizzle
occurred last evening around Gustavus, Juneau, and Hoonah with
only a glaze of ice accumulation at most observed. This gradually
transitioned to more snow as the night went on as low clouds
thickened and cooled. Satellite cloud top phase products showed
this change with clouds changing from supercooled liquid to more
mixed or ice by early this morning. The light precip is expected
to persist through the morning.
For the rest of the short range, the main forecast problem is the
front heading for the northern gulf coast today, followed by the
storm force low heading for the eastern gulf on Thu. Overall
forecast has not changed all that much with the main changes
being a eastward shift in the edge of the precip with the initial
front today, and a more pronounced dry period tonight into early
tomorrow between the initial front and the storm force low. For
the former, probability of precip has been increased for the
northern inner channels today compared with previous forecasts
with the likelihood of some light snow accumulations increased.
No significant accumulations expected as most of the moisture will
be aimed at Yakutat and even there strong warm air advection has
already warmed temps up to the mid 30s.
Into Wed night, easterly flow ahead of the next low will dry the
panhandle out a bit which was reflected by the decrease of pops
compared to the previous forecast. Otherwise precip and stronger
winds begin to move into the panhandle on Thu. Gusts to 40 to 50
mph are expected for many areas of the southern panhandle Thu as
the low moves in. Strong warm air advection is also present which
will warm many areas up above freezing. The 40 degree mark might be
reached as far north as Yakutat, and Gustavus Thu afternoon. As a
result the precip that is moving in will mostly be in the form of
rain (some northern areas will likely start as snow with a few
inches of accumulation Thu, but are expected to change to rain
through the day). With continued southerly flow for most areas
into Thu night rain will continue to be the main ptype into Fri.
LONG TERM.../Friday through Wednesday as of 10 pm Tuesday/ Little
change in thinking for this forecast period. Friday, the panhandle
will be under the influence of a low pressure system off the
central coast. Guidance agreement has further aligned with one
another placing the low just southwest of Cape Spencer by early
Friday morning. The low then looks to shift east into the
panhandle through the Icy Strait corridor before dissolving into a
shortwave. Precipitation chances remain elevated through the
weekend as onshore flow funnels moisture into the panhandle.
A stronger low develops along the Aleutian Islands Saturday.
Ample moisture support also looks favorable as it transports
moisture from the Pacific into the Gulf. By Saturday afternoon QPF
values increase as the associated front lifts into the panhandle
through Sunday. The parent low looks to remain situated in the
northern Gulf before shifting south along the coast through early
next week.
During the long term forecast one tends to look for
pattern changes, for example dry vs wet patterns, as more detailed
pieces of the forecast are harder to nail down. For this forecast
period, one could say an active wet pattern looks favorable. For
the fair-weather lovers out there, don't loose hope just yet. By
Wednesday, new guidance suggest a surface ridge to build through
the panhandle for about 24 hrs providing brief relief before yet
another low impacts the panhandle late week.
As for temperatures, an overall warming trend can be expected.
Beginning Friday, 850 mb temps steadily rise as each passing low
transports midlevel warm/moist air into the panhandle. Daytime
highs in the upper 30s to lower 40s and overnight lows in the mid
to upper 30s are expected through the weekend. Forecast challenges
will be centered around precipitation type as marginal
temperatures will support both snow and rain depending on frontal
passage and diurnal tendencies.
