A hurricane force low approaches the eastern gulf from the
south. The hurricane force low weakens slightly to storm force as
it tracks NE Friday night and makes landfall near Cape 
Fairweather Saturday morning. Outlook: A ridge of high pressure 
builds across the Panhandle as weak low pressure remains in the 
northern gulf through the weekend.

.SHORT TERM...Very active weather over the next two days for SE
Alaska. A trough of low pressure along the outside waters is
pushing showers over most of the panhandle through this evening.
Some of these showers could be moderate or heavy at times but
potential for lightning is looking less likely so have taken that
out of the forecast for the late afternoon/evening. Once this
trough passes, there is a brief break seen on satellite before
rain with a front moves into the northern outer coast.

Rain across the region looks to become moderate to heavy around
midnight with southerly winds increasing with wind gusts of
+40mph. The wind/rain continues through Friday morning, then a
new low center developing along the front will track N-NE into the
gulf. This will cause somewhat of a decrease in rain rates and
wind for the far northern panhandle, but and increase in those for
the southern half. Peak timing for wind and rainfall rates look to
be late Friday night with a large portion of the panhandle (Juneau
south) having to potential to see wind gusts of 60-70mph. The
track of the low will play a big factor in when the strongest
winds occur. Currently the track is for it to move inland near Mt.
Fairweather/Cross Sound, but some models are showing a slightly
more eastward track closer to Pelican/Gustavus. Generally strongest
winds will occur in the SW quadrant of of the low.

Once the low moves inland, then a wind shift to the SW will occur
with a surge in winds spreading northward through the inner
channels with a spike in Haines and Skagway Saturday morning.
Skagway in particular could see gusts up to 60mph. Expect
improving conditions through mid-day Saturday with the wind shift
and breaks starting to occur between showers - but showers could
still be heavy and cannot rule out thunderstorms.

on those threats.

.LONG TERM.../ Saturday to Thursday as of 9 pm Wednesday / Weather
Saturday starts to wind down as the remains of the powerful
system from Friday and Friday night fills moves into the northern
panhandle and the second wrap portion of the front gets pulled
into the panhandle as well. Onshore flow about a low stalled over
the northern gulf should keep showers ongoing into Sunday. A
minor pattern shift starts Sunday with a ridging over the far west
gulf and into Southwest Alaska, while further west over the
Bering is another front pushing to the western part of the state.

Ridge moves east to the central gulf and panhandle Monday to
early Tuesday, and the showers which will have been slowly
becoming more scattered should end with the ridge pushing into the
norther gulf area.

A wrinkle in the drier pattern is that models are hinting that a
new low will move into the southern BC region and is likely to
push moisture and showers north along the coast towards the
southern panhandle into Wednesday so there could be a little
precipitation for the southern panhandle Wednesday.

Temperatures are anticipated to run a few degrees blow normal for
the end of September and early October. With highs near 50 and
lows in the mid to upper 30s. The early part of next with more
breaks in sky cover have temps to the lower 30s, and may need to
nudge the temps down to sub freezing for overnight lows for the
northern half.

.MARINE...
...STORM FORCE LOW FRIDAY INTO EARLY SATURDAY...
A low pressure system will track northward through the eastern
Gulf of Alaska on Friday, reaching the Cross Sound region by early
Saturday morning, then shifting inland. SELY Storm Force winds of
50 to 60 knots are expected over the outside waters, with gusts
to hurricane force possible late Friday afternoon through late
Friday night. A wind shift to the west-southwest will occur behind
the low. Very high seas a likely near this low over the central
and southern outside waters with wave heights in excess of 30 feet
during the same timeframe.

For the inside waters, SELY winds will increase to 35 to 50 knots
from Icy Strait to Taku Inlet southward Friday evening, with
strongest winds in Clarence Strait and near ocean entrances.
Meanwhile, Glacier Bay and Lynn Canal will see winds ease and turn
out of the north for Friday night, but as the low shifts inland
Saturday morning, winds will shift to the south through the
northern inner channels with a spike in wind speeds of 30 to 40
knots.

.HYDROLOGY...Potential for minor flooding exists from this storm
due to persistent moderate to heavy rain falling in the 36hr
period between tonight and Saturday morning. Storm total rainfall
is expected to be around 2.5-5 inches. Little snow in the
mountains and freezing levels of around 3-4kft will limit some of
the runoff into the larger river basins, so main threat of minor
flooding would be from smaller creeks across the central panhandle
including: Juneau, Gustavus, Hoonah, Sitka. Additionally, Sitka
is under a Flash Flood Watch due to the potential for landslides,
primarily when wind shifts to the W-SW early Saturday morning.
