.SHORT TERM.../Through Tue night/ Snow has begun across most of
the panhandle this morning as a gale force front moves in.
Visibilites have been as low as a quarter mile at Yakutat
overnight and visiblities have started to drop to 2 miles or less
at many locations in the panhandle in the last hour or two. Many
locations are still below freezing even down to Ketchikan as of 5
am allowing the snow to start to accumulate. The expection is the
outer coast from Sitka southward and Annette Island where
temperatures have risen above freezing this morning.
No real change to the current forecast for today as we are still
expecting widespread snow this morning before some areas in the
central and southern panhandle warm up enough to start to mix
with rain (or just have the falling snow melt on contact with the
ground). No change to the winter weather hazards at this time.
Exception is the advisory for Sitka where temperatures have
started out warm enough that the snow is not accumulating at all
this morning. Decided to cancel that advisory early as a result as
temperatures are expected to keep warming through the morning.
That being said the forecast for Tonight into Tue is somewhat
complex. Tonight features a new low that will be coming up from
the SW that will bring another pulse of precipitation and winds to
the northern panhandle. Guidance is falling into better agreement
with the low coming up toward Cape Spencer by around midnight. At
the current time Juneau, Haines, and Skagway face the potential
for more accumulating snow from this feature with snow amounts up
to 5 inches expected tonight.
After that is another low that will be coming up from the S for
Tue night. Forecast confidence on this low is rather poor right
now as timing and track still need to be worked out. Currently the
GFS and the ECMWF favor something farther out to sea meanwhile
the Canadian is closer to the coast and the Nam features something
that is at least 9 hours quicker to move the low through then most
of the other models. While the general trend is for another period
of precip and wind for the panhandle (bumped up pops and wind
accordingly), the timing and intensity of the wind and precip is
uncertain due to the differences in timing and track of the
system.
.LONG TERM.../Wednesday through Monday night/...The extended range
forecast begins with a very deep upper trough that extends from
the Gulf south to 40N. A digging upper jet will aide in cutting
off an upper low between 40N and 50N late Wednesday evening, but
then be reabsorbed by Friday morning as the entire feature shifts
east over the Panhandle. The jet stream will become slightly more
zonal for the remainder of the extended range forecast with
Southeast Alaska remaining on the colder north side of the jet.
At the surface, models are all over the map with a potentially
very strong surface low with surface solutions that range from the
eastern Gulf to the southern Yukon. Trying to maintain some sense
of consistency with yesterday's forecast resulted in blending
heavily toward the 00Z GFS. Resultant forecast contains little in
the way of wind at the surface, as the low will already be over
land and headed northeast toward the Yukon. Low level winds aloft,
on the other hand, are still looking like they will still be quite
strong, so low level wind shear on Wednesday morning seems very
likely. This low will be moving fast so winds aloft should calm
down quickly Wednesday afternoon.
Precipitation associated with this low will be primarily in the
form of rain south of Sumner Strait and west of Misty Fjords as
well as the central outer coast. Elsewhere, accumulating snow will
already be in progress by the start of this long range forecast.
But, as with the winds, precipitation should wind down rapidly as
the low moves off to the northeast. By Thursday morning, the next
front will approach from the south, but organization of this
system is very poor and ill-defined. The pattern remains active
through next weekend with the next well organized front
approaching from the west. Timing between long range models varies
by 18 hours or more, so details on the weekend front impossible
to discern at this time. Colder low level air remains in place,
so most of the Panhandle should see additional accumulating snow
through the weekend. Where is Spring?
Adjusted PoP and QPF with GFS and ECMWF and a little help from the
Canadian NH. Temps modified with the EC and GFS as well. Overall
forecast confidence is below average on any details due to widely
