.SHORT TERM...Remnants of a frontal band moved over the northern
panhandle this morning with some lingering snow showers and low
clouds. Behind that wave clearing skies provided some spots of
sun and helped warm temperatures into the mid 40s. This weather
break will be short lived as the next low advances into the SE
Gulf this afternoon and evening. As seen on satellite cloud
shield north of the low center already reaching the central
panhandle with showers over the southern regions starting. Precip
will advance northward and with some colder air aloft expecting
some mix of snow for most central and northern locations along
with higher elevations to the south. Snow accumulations will be
limited to an inch or two. The low will be fairly robust with max
gale force winds for the SE Gulf and strong winds for the southern
inner channels this evening into early tomorrow morning. Winds
and diminish as the low moves northward with precip continuing to
advanced northward. Another low tracking south of the Aleutians
moves into the Western Gulf around the same time the current low
nears Cross Sound. The big question with the current low will be
the final track, dissipation timing, and interaction with the new
low in the Western Gulf.
Ensembles and operational models still showing fair spread on
this system for Friday and Saturday even now. Operational models
once again in two camps with GFS/NAM keeping the low intact
longer as it tracks northward into the NE Gulf, but not in
alignment on position. These models also shift the Aleutian low to
the Southern Gulf by Saturday as they keep the first low intact.
ECMWF/Canadian are dissipating the low into an open wave trough by
Friday afternoon, then bring the Aleutian low further north. GFS
ensembles v Canadian/ECMWF reflect a similar pattern. Decided to
go with a ECMWF/Canadian blend due to consistency of the model
runs and ensemble agreement. What this solution does is keeps
precip over the panhandle through Saturday and higher winds in the
southern gulf. Forecast confidence is below average due to model
spread.
.LONG TERM.../Saturday through Thursday night/...A large broad
low persists over the Gulf of Alaska. The various model solutions
on the operation solutions have a similar general idea, including
the idea of multiple centers and troughs/fronts rotating about
it, their positioning and strengths varying slightly. Settling on
fine details will have to wait for future model runs.
On Saturday one of the front/trough will lift north along or into
the southern half of the panhandle then pull back to the north
central gulf. Another bit of energy dives south, to near 50N
Saturday morning and this will pull the main low to the southeast
by Sunday night. A ridge that had been over the far western gulf,
that will be moved across the gulf and by a feature on the
south side of the large scale complex low pressure area anchored
of the Bering Sea. An incoming system will move from the north
Pacific and past Kodiak Island to PWS by early Tuesday, and then
into the panhandle Tuesday. A break in the precipitation is
expected from Sunday to Monday, with cloud cover shifting to a
partly to mostly cloudy pattern. If there are substantial breaks
in clouds, some morning fog may hamper early morning aviation, and
or slow down morning driving.
Temperatures do not appear to warm or cool substantially during
the period and will hang close enough to freezing to make snow a
consideration in at least some portion of the forecast area with
each passing disturbance.
A blend of GFS and ECMWF were used for the early part of the long
term, with NBM and WPC for the latter part. Overall confidence is
above average through the period.
