Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...
Light snow and flurries along a weak front the pushed through the
central Interior yesterday will stall today over the Northern
Interior and will push back south as a cold airmass begins moving
south over the North Slope today, the Northern Interior Saturday
and into the Southern Interior on Sunday. Temperatures are
expected to be well below normal early next week over much of
Northern Alaska before warming begins over the the Interior late
next week.

&&

.DISCUSSION...
The 29/00z model suite initialized well against the 00z surface
analysis and verified well against the 06z surface analysis.
Model spread is minimal in the short range and is much improved
over the last several runs as far as spread between different
model families in the mid range and extended range. The GFS,
ECMWF, and Canadian are in much better agreement as to the
magnitude of the cold airmass and the timing that the airmass will
push into Northern Alaska and when it will retreat back north out
of the Southern Interior.

Aloft at 500 hpa, a deep long wave trough extends from the high
Canadian arctic south and southwestward into Alaska and the Gulf
of Alaska. The trough will continue to deepen over the next
several day and will dig southward to the Pacific Northwest and
will extend from the North Pole south and southeastward to the
waters off of the California Coast as a ridge builds north over
the Northern Pacific and into the Bering Sea into Sunday and
Monday. The ridge will continue to build northward to the North
Pole and will continue to push east on Monday into the Eastern
Bering Sea and Western Alaska. A second deep longwave trough will
extend from Central Siberia south and eastward to just north of
Hawaii Monday and Tuesday. The pattern breaks down as the
northern part of the ridge becomes cutoff on Wednesday over
Western Alaska and as the southern portion retreats to the south
over the Pacific. The overall pattern remains highly amplified
through next week.

Central and Eastern Interior...
The front that pushed through the Central Interior yesterday with
light snow and flurries continues to weaken and is stalled along
the Brooks Range. Light snow is expected to continue over the
Northern Interior with less than an inch expected through
Saturday. Very light snowfall or flurries are expected Saturday
and Sunday as a cold front pushes south into the Northern Interior
on Saturday and into the Southern Interior on Sunday. Gusty
northeast winds are possible over the highway summits and will
bring low wind chill values to these areas beginning Saturday and
continuing into Monday. Snowfall will diminish on Sunday, and
temperatures will drop Sunday night in the Fairbanks area.
Temperatures Sunday night and Monday morning could approach 30
below to 35 below at valley level; however, cloud cover will make
the forecast challenging. Slightly warmer temperatures are
expected Tuesday with temperatures in the 25 to 30 below range.
Cold spots where clouds clear out could drop below 40 below.
Warmer temperatures are expected to push into the area on
Wednesday and will likely be realized in the hills first as cold
arctic air will linger in the valleys longer.

North Slope and Brooks Range...
A weak surface low over the Mackenzie Delta combined with high
pressure near 80N and 160E will continue to produce east winds
along with broken cloud cover and a few flurries for much of the
North Slope. Temperatures will assume a steady drop going into
the weekend, with some of the coldest temperatures of the season
to follow early next week. Wind chill values at or near advisory
levels will continue today and again tonight as temperatures
continue to drop. Wind chill advisories continue for zones 201 and
203 where wind chill values as cold as 55 below are expected.

West Coast and Western Interior...
Strong and gusty winds combined with light snow have combined to
reduce visibilities in zones 207 and 213 where Winter Weather
Advisories remain in effect through Saturday morning. Low wind
chill values are expected to develop in these areas as well and
will continue into the Weekend. Snowfall in the Western Interior
will mostly taper this evening with around 1 to 2 inches of snow
expected. Colder temperatures are expected for the weekend.

Extended forecast for days 4 to 7...
Starting off early next week, a cold airmass will be in place over
northern Alaska. This has the potential to bring Fairbanks its
coldest temperatures so far this season; however, there is still a
lot of uncertainty due to the cloud cover. Temperatures are
expected to warm up to more seasonal levels in the later portion
of next week.
