Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...
The cold airmass over mainland Alaska will hang in place into
mid-week, but will shift east out of the state into Wednesday,
prompting a significant warm-up Thursday and into the weekend.
With this warm-up will bring clouds and increasing activity for
the West Coast and Western Interior as more than one front is
forecast to bring wind, snow, mixed precipitation, and possible
coastal impacts.

.DISCUSSION...

Aloft...
Models in fairly decent agreement with the transitional synoptic
pattern through the end of this week.

Surface...
Models in fairly decent agreement at the surface through about day
2. Differences arise Thursday into Friday, especially with a low
tracking in the southern Bering during that same time frame.

Central and Eastern Interior...
Calm and cold for much of the Interior through Wednesday. Likely
snow today south of Eagle and from Dot Lake east which will
dissipate into the evening hours. Clouds will be increasing from
the southwest to the northeast Wednesday into Thursday. Increasing
chances for snow will follow that same trajectory beginning early
Thursday. Winds will increase for the higher terrain and through
the AK Range passes Thursday. Highs rebounding into the teens
below to single digits below zero Thursday afternoon.

West Coast and Western Interior...
Cold wind chills to 45 below ending this morning for most areas
along the coast. Cold wind chills will persist into Wednesday
morning for coastal areas north of the Seward Peninsula.
Otherwise, quiet and calm until a front reaches St. Lawrence
Island by this evening with blizzard conditions expected.
Southeasterly winds and snow will reach the Y-K Delta and Seward
Peninsula the overnight and early morning hours on Wednesday. Snow
and increasing winds will spread into the Western Interior early
Thursday. As a result, temperatures increasing each day and may
even go above freezing in the Y-K Delta region by the end of this
week.

North Slope and Brooks Range...
Quiet and calm conditions today with areas of low stratus and fog.
As front moves inland, winds along the coast will increase out of
the east beginning Wednesday for the Chukchi Sea Coast, and
spread along the rest of the coast into Thursday. Chance of snow
west of Wainright Thursday. Temperatures gradually increasing
through the end of the week.

Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...
Strong southwest winds developing this weekend over the Bering
Sea will bring the potential for coastal flooding along the West
Coast Sunday into Monday time frame.
