.SYNOPSIS...
The weather pattern will transition through the short term, with
cold temperatures in the 30s, 40s, and even 50s below zero
returning to the Interior over the next couple of nights, while
out west stormy conditions will begin tonight and last into next
week. The first winter storm will impact portions of the West
Coast beginning tonight and lasting into Saturday morning, with a
slew of Blizzard Warnings, Winter Weather Advisories, and Wind
Chill Advisories in effect. A second, more powerful winter storm
looks to impact a larger areal extent of the West Coast and into
the Western Interior late weekend and into early next week with
strong winds and heavy snow possible.

.DISCUSSION...
Upper level troughing hanging on across the Interior will slide to
the east as strong ridging builds out west tonight. A strong
longwave trough will move across the Bering Sea tomorrow and reach
the West Coast by tomorrow afternoon. This will bring strong winds
and blowing snow issues across areas of the West Coast tonight and
into Saturday. This longwave will lift to the north before another
reinforcing longwave moves across the Bering Sea on Sunday,
bringing the next round of winter weather impacts across the West
Coast and Western Interior beginning on Sunday and lasting into
next week. These impacts look to be more widespread than the
first event on Friday, especially with the snow amounts. Models
still have some differences on how amplified this trough digs
through Sunday night and into Monday, but the consensus remains an
active weather pattern out west going into the middle of next
week, at the least.

Central and Eastern Interior...
Flurries remain in areas of the Interior where clouds continue to
linger this afternoon. Bitter cold temperatures in the 30s to 40s
below zero will filter into the Interior tonight as skies
continue to clear this evening. Tomorrow night looks to be the
coldest night with some areas potentially reaching 50s below zero
in areas such as the Yukon Flats region. Conditions will then warm
slightly on Saturday ahead warmer air pushing in from the west on
Sunday, resulting in rapid warming going into next week. Alaska
Range winds will strengthen out of the south on Sunday, causing
potential wind chill issues Saturday night prior to warming
temperatures.

North Slope and Brooks Range...
Wind Chill Warnings remain in effect for the eastern Arctic Coast
through this evening as west winds to 15 mph continue to persist.
Otherwise temperatures remaining in the 30s to 40s below along the
coast and Arctic Plains tonight before a warming trend begins
tomorrow. Winds will pick up out of the southeast along the
Arctic Coast from Utqiagvik west and the western Brooks Range
beginning tonight as a weather front approaches from the west.
Winds through the eastern Brooks Range will increase beginning
tomorrow, with gusts into the 30-40 mph range through Saturday.

West Coast and Western Interior...
A number of Blizzard Warnings, Winter Weather Advisories, and Wind
Chill Advisories are in effect for the West Coast and portions of
the Western Interior over the next couple of days. Main concerns
are blowing snow issues where it snows, with strong winds gusting
anywhere from 40 to 70 mph along the coast. As this event wraps up
by Saturday, another winter storm looks to impact the West Coast
and further east into the Western Interior with another round of
strong winds and widespread heavy snow. An SPS remains in effect
with more details about this event.

Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...A powerful storm is
expected late this weekend, which may cause some coastal impacts
in association with rising water and ice along the shore. Coastal
areas along the West Coast from the Bering Strait south may see
sea ice pushing up on the beaches where there is limited shorefast
ice and who are prone to southeast winds, through Sunday night.
Another surge of west winds as the low shifts inland may present
issues on Monday, as strong westerly flow would develop in this
scenario. Currently, the latest progs are indicating 3-4 feet
above the normal high tide line (MHHW) for parts of Norton Sound.

Extended Days 4 to 7...A major winter storm still looks to impact
the West Coast on Sunday and into next week. Heavy snow and strong
winds continue to remain the primary concerns with this storm.
There is potential for coastal issues as well depending on storm
evolution going into Monday and beyond. This pattern will allow
for strong winds in the Alaska and Brooks Range passes beginning
on Sunday. As the system pushes further east, there will be
increasing chances for snow in the Central and Eastern Interior
Monday into Tuesday. Although models diverge a good bit beyond
Monday, unsettled weather out west looks to be the theme for most
of next week.
