.SYNOPSIS...
Brr, it's cold out there this morning with clear skies over much
of the Interior north across the Brooks Range to the Beaufort
Coast. Many places have dipped into the 20s and 30s below, with a
few areas overachieving and have plummeted into the 40s to near 50
below across the Eastern Interior. Expect more of the same as
cold temperatures will hold on strong over the next few nights,
and then a gradual warming will occur starting Sunday. Elsewhere,
over the West Coast, a winter storm is currently bringing a slew
of Blizzard Warnings, Winter Weather Advisories, and Wind Chill
Advisories. This is the first storm of an active period, with a
stronger storm right behind it, impacting the West Coast Saturday
night into early Sunday morning, moving into the Western Interior
by Sunday afternoon. This second winter storm will bring a second
round of widespread snow, strong winds, and blowing snow across
the West Coast and Western Interior into Monday.

.DISCUSSION...
Upper Levels and Analysis...
The current pattern across Northern Alaska consists of a deep
trough at 500 hpa over the Eastern Interior being anchored by a
closed arctic 499 decameter (dam) low over the Gulf of Alaska,
while ridging extends over the Western Interior. As the day
progresses, the ridge will slide east over the Interior as a
strong longwave trough moves east across the Bering Sea to the
West Coast this afternoon. This is bringing strong winds and
blowing snow issues to West Coast and then into the Western
Interior by Saturday. This longwave will lift to the north before
another reinforcing longwave moves across the Bering Sea on
Saturday, bringing the next round of winter weather to the West
Coast and Western Interior late Saturday through Sunday.

Model Discussion...
The models are in good general agreement on the evolution of
features on the synoptic scale over the next several days, with a
consensus of an active weather pattern for the West Coast and
Western Interior into the middle of next week. With good
continuity between model runs, we made limited changes to the
inherited forecast for this morning's forecast package.

North Slope and Brooks Range...
Cold temperatures coupled with winds exceeding 15 mph are
creating areas of low windchill this morning, with a few a
locations meeting Wind Chill Advisory criteria along the Western
Arctic Coast. Elsewhere, frigid temperatures are plentiful this
morning across the Arctic Plain to the Central Beaufort Sea Coast,
where temperatures took a nose dive into the 30s and 40s below,
with an area of near 50 below around Umiat. Cold temperatures
will hold on today across the Central Beaufort Coast; but
elsewhere, look for a warming trend to begin this afternoon. This
is a result of southeast winds increasing across the Brooks Range
today, with the strongest over the Western Brooks Range and across
western portions of the region this morning, primarily west of
Umiat, then expanding east over the Eastern Brooks Range by this
afternoon, with gusts to exceeding 30 mph through Saturday.

West Coast and Western Interior...
A winter storm impacting the region is producing weather where
Blizzard Warnings, Winter Weather Advisories, and Wind Chill
Advisories are warranted and in effect across the West Coast into
portions of the Western Interior today into Saturday. A few
concerns with this first storm is blowing snow issues where snow
is occuring, with strong winds gusting anywhere from 40 to 70 mph
along the coast. As this event wraps up Saturday, attention
quickly shifts to another, more powerful, winter storm that looks
to impact the West Coast and Western Interior Sunday with another
round of strong winds and widespread snow. We currently have a
SPS outwith more details on this second storm.

Central and Eastern Interior...
Satellite imagery this morning depicts a vast area of clear skies
across the region, bringing bitterly cold temperatures in the 30s
to 40s below, with a few locations plummeting to near 50 below
zero. Not much warming expected today with another colder night in
store Friday night. Temperatures will warm ever so slightly on
Saturday across the Central Interior and the Eastern Interior by
Sunday as warmer air pushes in from the west. The Tanana Valley
Jet will ramp up today, bringing easterly winds 20 to 25 mph to
Delta Junction, and fluctuates slightly down through Saturday,
and ramping up again on Sunday. Elsewhere, southerly gap winds
through Alaska Range Passes will strengthen Sunday, causing
potential wind chill issues Saturday night prior to warming
temperatures.

Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...
A powerful storm moving across the Bering Sea into the West Coast
on Sunday may cause concerns for coastal impacts in association
with rising water and ice pushing up on the beaches where there is
limited shorefast ice, primarily south of the Bering Strait.
These impacts are a result of strong south to southeast winds
through Sunday night. There will be another surge of west winds as
the low moves inland on Monday, bringing an additional round of
potential coastal impacts. Current guidance indicates a possible
storm surge of 3-5 feet above the normal high tide line for parts
of the Yukon Delta north and east into Norton Sound.

Extended Forecast for Days 4 through 7...
Beginning the extended period on Monday, a powerful winter storm
will be impacting the West Coast and Western Interior, bringing a
vast expanse of heavy snow and strong winds. In addition, this
storm will also bring coastal issues for communities along the
Bering Sea, south of the Bering Strait, east into Norton Sound.
This storm will allow for strong winds in passes of the Alaska and
Brooks Range as well. As this storm progresses east through the
day on Monday, snow chances will increase across the Central and
Eastern Interior into Tuesday. As this storm weakens by Wednesday
over the Eastern Interior, there are some model differences into
Thursday, but it looks to remain unsettled across the West Coast
into late next week.
