* WHAT...Blowing snow and very cold wind chills expected. Plan 
  on difficult travel conditions at times. Winds gusting as high 
  as 40 mph will cause areas of blowing and drifting snow 
  reducing the visibility to one half mile or less at times. 
  Very cold wind chills as low as 55 below zero will cause 
  frostbite in as little as 10 minutes to exposed skin.

* WHERE...Eastern Beaufort Sea Coast.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Winds gusting as high as 35 mph will 
  cause areas of blowing and drifting snow. Cold wind chills as

Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...
With the exception of the Eastern North Slope where blizzard
conditions continue this morning, high pressure continues to
dominate much of Northern Alaska, keeping weather conditions
relatively benign. Blizzard conditions are expected to improve
this afternoon over Eastern North Slope as both winds and snow
diminish. Temperatures once again plummeted into the 30s and 40s
below this morning over much of the Interior. Temperatures are
expected to moderate nicely again this afternoon to the single
digits below zero before plummeting once again tonight into the
20s and 30s below. These temperatures coupled with areas of
stronger winds along the Arctic and West Coast will continue to
produce very low wind chills into today. Attention quickly shifts
to Tuesday, as the start of a series of storms to impact the
Interior, bringing warmer temperatures and snowier conditions for
many locations.

.DISCUSSION...
At the surface, models continue to be in good agreement with the
placement of major synoptic features, with a 984 mb low 150 nm
north of Banks Island and a 1026 mb high over Eastern Siberia. A
front rotating around the low near Banks Island has pushed on
shore over the Eastern North Slope and is now stalled in the
Eastern Brooks Range. The front continues to produce light snow
and strong and gusty winds which are producing blizzard
conditions. Conditions are expected to improve this afternoon as
both winds and snow diminish. High pressure over Siberia will
remain quasi- stationary, building southeast over Northern Alaska,
keeping most locations dry and cold today. By Tuesday, the first
of several fronts will move into Southwest Alaska and cross the
Interior bringing snowier and warmer conditions across the region.

Aloft, at 500 mb, models initialize well with the main feature
being a 459 decameter (dam) closed low north of Banks Island with
a deep longwave trough extending southwest across Northern Alaska
into the Bering Sea. In this longwave trough, a shortwave trough
and associate 510 dam low continues to move south along the West
Coast and is currently located over Western Bristol Bay. This
upper level low will continue to push south and east into the
Gulf of Alaska as an upper level ridge builds north and east into
the Eastern Bering Sea and West Coast late today and Tuesday and
into the Central and Eastern Interior by Tuesday evening. This
will bring in a southwesterly to westerly flow across the
Interior, increasing temperatures aloft and chances of snow. This
will be the first storm in a series that will bring a snowier
pattern along with warmer temperatures over much of the Interior
through most of this upcoming week.

North Slope and Brooks Range...
Snow and windy conditions continue to impact the Eastern Arctic
Coast as a front which pushed through the area yesterday is now
stalled in the Eastern Brooks Range. The strongest winds are
impacting portions of the Eastern Beaufort Sea Coast and continue
to produce blizzard or near blizzard conditions. A Blizzard
Warning remains in effect through 9 AM this morning for the
Eastern Beaufort Sea Coast, for Pt. Thomson east to Kaktovik.
Conditions are expected to improve as winds and snow diminish
later this morning. By Tuesday, ridging will push back into the
area creating benign weather conditions along with a return of
colder temperatures for the remainder of the week.

West Coast and Western Interior...
Relatively quiet conditions will persist today as high pressure
over Siberia dominates weather conditions across the region.
Expect a mix of mainly clear skies and areas of stratus over much
of the West Coast and Western Interior today. Cold temperatures
coupled with with gusty northwest winds along the West Coast,
continue to produce low wind chills this morning but are expected
to moderate this afternoon as winds diminish and temperatures
increase along portions of the Seward Peninsula. Then, attention
shifts to the YK Delta as a front moves onshore early Tuesday
morning and then into the Western Interior by Tuesday afternoon.
This will be the start of an active weather pattern as a series of
systems will move across the region, each one bringing rounds of
snow and warmer temperatures.

Central and Eastern Interior...
Mainly clear skies continue to dominate much of the Central and
Eastern Interior with a few areas of higher level clouds.
Temperatures in the 30s and 40s below this morning will moderate
into the single digits below zero again this afternoon before
they plummet once again tonight into 20s and 30s below, with the
coldest areas in valley locations with clear skies and light
winds. Then, with a storm marching across the Western Interior
Tuesday morning, look for increase chances of snow Tuesday
afternoon as the precipitation field reaches the Central Interior.
This will be the start of a snowier pattern along with warmer
temperatures across the region for the remainder of the work week.
There is still some uncertainty of the exact location of the
heaviest snowfall, as models continue to struggle with the fine
details, stay tuned to the forecast for further updates as we
approach this event.

Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...None.

Extended Forecast for Days 4 through 7...
Beginning the extended mid to late week will continue with an
active weather pattern impacting many location across the
Interior as series of storms push moisture north into the region
bringing several rounds of on- and- off again snow, with the
heaviest amounts primarily south of the Yukon River, along with a
surge of warmer temperatures. The North Slope and Arctic Coast
will continue to have the coldest temperatures and driest
conditions through the extended period.
