Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...
Snow over the Central Interior will taper off into the late
morning as the system moves to the Eastern Interior before falling
apart. A front will be approaching the West Coast today bringing
windy conditions to the coast, snow, blowing snow, and blizzard
conditions for St. Lawrence Island.

.DISCUSSION...

Models...
Models in pretty good agreement for the short term until around
Friday into Saturday when another front approaches the West Coast.
GFS best captured winds in the near-term over the Bering with a
transition into the NAM for the rest of this morning's forecast
package.

Aloft...
A cold upper level trough that extends westward over the Brooks
Range will shift back over Canada this evening, thus allowing a
temporary break in the cold temperatures that have been locked to
our north. An upper level ridge will then transition from SW to
NE today into tomorrow. A strong upper level and associated
surface high will remain anchored north of Wrangel Island into the
weekend.

Central and Eastern Interior...
Snow is occuring from the western Alaska Range NE to the Yukon
Flats. Expect snow to decrease into the later morning hours and
end later in the Eastern Interior this evening. Surface winds in
the Interior are decreasing, however, will return along parts of
the Dalton Highway beginning tonight and Friday morning. Wind
chills may return to the uplands north of Fairbanks from
Livengood north. Skies will clear briefly into Friday morning,
allowing temperatures to drop back into the 20's to 40's below
zero.

West Coast and Western Interior...
Light snow is occuring from the Y-K Delta into the Upper Kuskokwim
Valley. This will dissipate until a low approaching the Y-K Delta
will bring more snow to the area. This will send a front up
through the Bering Strait. Blizzard conditions are occuring on St.
Lawrence Island and eventually will reach the Strait. Coastal
areas will experience gusty conditions and blowing snow with
reduced visibility. Winds will decrease into the day Friday. Very
cold wind chills are also occuring from the middle Seward
Peninsula north to Point Hope this morning.

North Slope and Brooks Range...
Very cold wind chills of 40 to 60 below will continue into today,
though winds will be decreasing some, except along the NW Arctic
Coast and Point Thompson to the Canadian border. Isolated
locations are experiencing wind chills as low as 70 below zero
this morning. Patchy stratus and fog exists, though no widespread
bands currently exist in the area.

Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...None.

Extended Forecast for Day 4 Through 7...
A front will bring snow to the West Coast on Monday before
progressing into the Interior Monday night and Tuesday. There is
increasing model agreement that an upper level low will move from
north of Kaktovik on Sunday to over the Eastern Interior by the
middle of next week. This will bring gradually cooling
temperatures and drying conditions to much of the Interior with
much below normal temperatures expected for most of the area north
of the Alaska Range.
