Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...
A cold air mass remains in place over northern Alaska. Higher
elevations areas are still seeing marginal wind chills although
the air has moderated some with the departure of the arctic
trough. Out west, very windy conditions persist as a very strong
pressure gradient is still in place over the area. Winds are
expected to die down on Wednesday, but another round of strong
winds are expected for Thursday into Friday. Snow has moved into
the Lower Yukon Valley this afternoon. This system will continue
to push eastward across the southern Interior tonight into early
Thursday.

.DISCUSSION...
Upper Levels and Analysis...
Aloft, at 500 mb, a high amplitude ridge remains in place over
the west coast. This ridge is promoting a northerly arctic flow
aloft over the eastern side of the forecast area. This will change
tonight as an Arctic trough digs southward to lie along the
Brooks Range by Wednesday morning. A shortwave currently over the
Yukon Delta will push to the west over the Interior tonight into
Thursday. At the surface, the tight pressure gradient over the
west coast that has been bringing strong winds to the area will
relax tonight and Wednesday. We expect the gradient to tighten up
again on Thursday as a front approaches.

Model Discussion...
The numerical models have come into slightly better agreement
with the general pattern, but they are still not in great
agreement with the front currently along the West Coast which is
expected to move inland the next few days. Some guidance (the NAM,
and some runs of the ECMWF) show a more suppressed flow pattern
which shunts the front south of the Fairbanks NSB and keeps most
activity limited to the AK Range. The GFS and Canadian and ECMWF
are more aggressive in lifting the front north into the arctic air
mass, with light accumulating snow moving across the Tanana
Valley and into the White Mountains by Wednesday. Given the
uncertainty, this forecast will trend the chances upward, but
there is some possibility this front stays farther south with
accumulating snow mainly staying over the Western and southern
Central Interior. After Wednesday, cold high pressure will stay in
firm control into the late week.

Central and Eastern Interior...
A moderated arctic high is still in place, with cold valley
inversions although they are not as strong as precious days as the
coldest air has moved south. Wind chills are mostly in the -30 to
-40 F range over the higher terrain and in the AK Range Passes
and have likely hit their lowest values. Cold wind chill values
will continue through tonight. A front will move into the southern
portions of the Interior and the AK Range on Wednesday and
Wednesday night, bringing light accumulating snow to the region,
possibly including the Fairbanks area and the Tanana Valley up to
the White Mountains. Accumulations will be light as there will be
a lot of dry air to contend with. Thereafter, cold high pressure
will linger through the remainder of the work week.

West Coast and Western Interior... Blizzard conditions on St
Lawrence Island will diminish this evening as the pressure
gradient weakens over the area.. Strong easterly winds will
continue elsewhere along the west coast; however the strongest
winds have likely already occurred and winds will continue to drop
tonight. A front over the Yukon Delta will push east through
Wednesday night, bringing 2-4 inches of snow. Areas north of
Norton Sound will remain dry over the next 24 hours as cold high
pressure dominates. Another front will bring snow and blowing snow
the St. Lawrence Island on Thursday and to the West Coast on
Friday. North Slope and Brooks Range... No change to forecast
thinking for the North Slope as bitter cold temps remain in place,
and periods of easterly winds create dangerous wind chills over
the West Arctic where wind chills continue to push -55 to -60F.
Elsewhere, winds will be light enough for no major wind chills.
Otherwise, expect continued periods of ice fog and low stratus as
the mid level flow remains onshore. A trough of low pressure moves
over the East Arctic on Thursday which will bring back some
southwest winds to 10 mph or so.

Extended Range Forecast Days 4-7...There is increasing likelihood
that arctic high pressure will shunt the next low moving into the
GUlf of AK south of the AK Range for the weekend, but there are
still some models (mainly the Canadian) which attempt to bring a
front into the Interior from the south. It seems more likely,
however, it stays cold and dry. Another deep arctic trough is
looking more likely to move into the Mainland Sunday and Monday,
as the leading GFS model keeps showing this, while the lagging
ECMWF is now depicting this too. The Canadian is totally different
with southwest flow, For now favoring the former solutions which
keep it cold. Stay tuned...models are still struggling at this
juncture.
