Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

.Synopsis...High pressure will move across the southern half of
the forecast area brining some clearing skies and an end to the
showers through Sunday. The remainder of the area, mainly north of
the Yukon River will remain cloudy with rainshowers south of the
Brooks Range, and a mix or rain and snow showers from the Brooks
Range north. As the high pressure moves east Sunday night look for
more showers moving into areas south of the Yukon, while cloudy
conditions and showers will continue over the remainder of the
area.

.Discussion...

Models...21/12Z solutions are in generally good agreement
considering the progressive pattern that has set up across the
state. They remain in good agreement into the extended periods.
Will lean toward a concensus blend for the short term, but limit
use of the GFS as it is a bit stronger than the remainder of the
solutions. Adjusting the winds up a little for the northwest areas
in the short term as they have been a bit stronger than
anticipated. Next system moving in will be a bit challenging for
the Interior locations as flow make put the southern Interior from
Fairbanks southeast in the rain shadow.

Aloft...At 500 hpa...A 518 dam low has moved to 100 nm north of
Utqiagvik with a strong shortwave moving over the Northwest Arctic
Coast. A weaker shortwave extends southeast over Kaktovik this
afternoon. Ridging extends from at 593 dam high in the Northeast
Pacific over southern Kodiak Island and just south of St Lawrence
Island. A 558 dam low is over the Western Bering Sea with
troughing extending southeast to a 558 dam low 200 nm south of
Nikolski. Sunday afternoon the low in the Arctic will be 500 nm
north of Demarcation Point at 521 dam. A shortwave associated with
the low will be moving over the Northwest Arctic Coast and
Chukchi Sea. Ridging will rotate over the state, mainly south of
the Yukon River as the lower heights associated with the low in
the Arctic are pushed south. Ridging will continue to extend
northwest over St Lawrence Island. Troughing over the Bering Sea
will remain in place with a 556 dam low just south of St Matthew
Island, a 558 dam low over the Central Bering Sea, and a 556 dam
low 150 nm southeast of Sand Point. At 850 hpa...Temperatures
over the forecast area will generally be in the -3C to +3C range
through Monday.

Surface...A 995 mb low is 400 nm north of Utqiagvik with a front
extending south over the Central Arctic Coast just east of
Utqiagvik, then southwest to Kotzebue Sound. High pressure has
moved over the southwest mainland with a 1021 mb high near Anvik
and high pressure pushing east over the north slopes of the Alaska
Range. High pressure extends south as well into the Northeast
Pacific. A 1007 mb low has moved to Dutch Harbor. By Sunday
morning the low in the Arctic will be 500 nm north of Prudhoe Bay
at 994 mb with the front extending southeast to a 1009 mb low in
MacKenzie Bay, then southwest into the Upper Yukon Flats. The high
will move east to Delta Junction with high pressure holding south
and east of the Yukon River, and extending west over St Lawrence
Island. The low over Dutch Harbor will move north near Nunivak
Island at 1001 mb. A 1010 mb low will move out of Chukotka to the
Western Chukchi Sea Early Sunday morning. By Sunday afternoon the
low in the Arctic will be 500 nm north of Kaktovik at 993 mb with
the front extending southeast over Banks Island. A 1013 mb high
will move over MacKenzie Bay with weak high pressure extending
west to the Kobuk Basin. High pressure will also be holding on
over Prince William Sound. The low near Nunivak Island will be
stalled in the area with a front extending southeast to a 1008 mb
low 100 nm south of Kodiak Island. Weak low pressure will be
holding on over the Southern Chukchi Sea and Bering Strait. High
pressure will be pushing southeast over the Northern Chukchi Sea.

Arctic Coast and Brooks Range...Cloudy with periods of showers
will continue through the weekend and into next week. Showers will
be a mix of snow and rain. No significant snow accumulation is
expected from Anaktuvuk Pass west, with 1 to 3 inches of snow to
the east above 3500 feet. Winds west to northwest 10 to 25 mph.
High temperatures generally in the mid 30s to mid 40s with lows in
the 30s.

West Coast and Western Interior...Some breaks tonight in the
clouds from the Seward Peninsula south, with generally cloudy
conditions to the north. Showers ending this afternoon and evening
south of Huslia, with scattered showers to the north. Winds
south to west 5 to 25 mph with the strongest winds from the Bering
Strait north. Temperatures remain cool with highs in the 40s to
lower 50s, and lows in the mid 30s to lower 40s.

Central and Eastern Interior...High pressure pushing into the
southern Interior will bring some clearing skies and cool
overnight temperatures to the area. Most areas will see
temperatures fall into the mid to upper 30s overnight with some of
the traditionally cooler locations in the lower 30s. Another
round of showers Monday as the next system moves through the area.

Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...None.

Extended forecast for days 4 to 7...Broad troughy pattern will
prevail with cloudy, showery, and cooler conditions across the
forecast area.
